Every year around this time we get everybody's game of the year list, but I was thinking, what would everybody's game of the year be if you could go back to 2002?

go to the link below and check out the list of games, and post your favorite game from that year in the comments.

Grand Theft Auto Vice City followed by Timesplitters 2, The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker does not count because it only came out in Japan that year.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, no question. That game was awesome. I remember me and my cousins would play it in free drive (always on the first stage), make the cops chase us, and see who could last the longest without getting caught by the cops. Add in an awesome soundtrack, some bad-ass cars. and you have one hell of a video game!

Metroid Prime. Just me? OK.

Also, that list seems wildly incomplete, but I guess it contains the sort of stuff we'd consider games of the year. But the equivalent Wikipedia page for more recent years has like two or three times as many fairly notable games.

It's a very tough call, but I'll have to go with Morrowind. (Runners up: Metroid Prime and Animal Crossing)

Actually now that I've looked at the list, holy shit it's hard to choose. A bunch of my favorite games ever came out that year. I suppose if I had to form a top 5 for 2002 it would be

  1. Metroid Prime
  2. Morrowind
  3. Wind Waker (Only in Japan, but I'm allowing it.)
  4. Super Mario Sunshine
  5. GTA Vice City

I can do a top 5.

1. Vice City

2. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos

3. Metroid Prime

4. Metroid Fusion

5. Animal Crossing

I could easily see swapping WCIII with Vice City, and swapping Prime, Fusion, and Animal Crossing all over the place.

Well I don't remember what came out in 02, but since most are answering with Vice City, that's my pick also. I played the shit out of that game, it just came out on IOS which is great.

That page is just a summary of whatever the editors think are "notable." Wikipedia maintains full lists for games released every year as a separate category of pages. 2002's can be found here.

That being said, my gut feeling is to go with GTA Vice City since that game had a profound impact on my understanding of the importance of settings in video games, but Morrowind, Wind Waker (I speak Japanese, so I'm allowing it on my own list as well), Splinter Cell, and maybe Cubivore (if I was in a super subversive mood, granted) could have all been serious contenders.

As a side note, totally wasn't aware that both the remake of RE1 and RE0 came out in the same year. I always figured they had a bit more space between the two. I guess two different teams at Capcom worked on them, then?

(Edit: Clearly the Atlus classic Nijiiro Dodge Ball: Otome Tachi no Seishun is the winner, though.)

  1. Kingdom Hearts. The original was awesome even if the sequels have been random jiberish.
  2. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  3. Sonic Adventure 2
  4. Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix
  5. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

No one is going to say IGN's Best game of 2002 - Battlefield 1942?

Hmm, imagine that.

Anyway, Metroid Prime.

Star Wars Jedi Outcast, since I played Vice City on the PC (came out in 2003), along with NOLF2 and Super Smash Bros Melee (GameCube launched in May 2002 in Europe)

  • Metroid Fusion/Prime
  • Jedi Knight II (Though I only played it just last year. Superb game.)
  • Splinter Cell
  • Super Mario Sunshine

There's my top five in no particular order. I feel like I can't include GTA:VC because even though I played a lot of it and enjoyed it, all I ever did was drive cars and motorcycles around (I loved riding dirt bikes on the dirt bike course thing) and occasionally get into gun fights. I never even tried a mission (all that I played of it was at a friend's house.)

Wow, so many great games came out that year, it would be hard to pare it down to even 10. I know I'm a black sheep for putting this, but for me its Final Fantasy XI. I know its rough around the edges and I fully acknowledge all of its faults, but they've refined it over the years and I actually still play it to this day. Also, I have to give credit to Socom, that was my first foray into online gaming and it was super awesome.

There are plenty good ones to choose from... If I had to pick from what I played at the time (or maybe even a bit later cause I wasnt keeping up with games then as much as I do now) my winner is hands down Neverwinter Nights.

I would probably pick Morrowind today cause that game blew my mind, but I discovered it years after it came out.

I was 12 in 2002 and really didn't have as wide a knowledge of games as a do now, but man, I think it has to be Super Mario Sunshine for me. I loved that game and it invokes a great amount of nostalgia in me.

Yep. Metroid Prime is, hands down, the best game released that year. Absolutely no contest whatsoever. You might be able to say Morrowind, but the combat in that game is way too awkward.

Metroid Prime for sure for me. Got it for Christmas that year and had such amazing fun playing it. Probably one of my top 3 games of all time. Entering Phendrana Drifts for the first time with that music going on while it was actually snowing outside was great. God, I really want to play it again now.

Honorable mentions for me go to Vice City and Dungeon Siege. Dungeon Siege was a good but not great game, but it was the first game outside of first person shooters like Counterstrike that I played online with my friends. Multiplayer on that was a blast if you played with a bunch of people you know.

It's a toss up between Morrowind and Vice City. The games that to me are the best their franchises respectively. Honorable mention goes to Jet Set Radio Future that game was so much fun.

Man 2002 was a pretty good year wasn't it? So many truly great games.
