I am a PC gamer. I am also left-handed. This means that I use my left hand to look/aim in most games (mouse), and move the character with my right (keys). And realised that this is very likely the reason that every time I get a gamepad in my hand and try to play any FPS or action game on a console, I feel completely handicapped, as I have to aim with my right thumb and move with my left.
Now, I don't own a console, but from what I have been told, there are generally no option in games to swap the stick functions in the gamepad. Or is my intel wrong?
What are you guys' thoughts on this? Do any lefties out there have the same "problem" as me? Should there be button-remapping options in console games, or should us lefties just learn to live with it?

- Cheers

As far as I know, you can't change the stick functions. The closest is switching which hand holds the nunchuck on the Wii, but the only game where that's applicable (and the game is actually decent) is Metroid Prime 3.

Yeah, I have yet to see any console game that lets you remap any controls. But why not though?
I'm just wondering if it's me that's weird, or if other lefties just doesn't care and got used to the controls. Maybe there aren't a lot of PC gamers who also play console games? Idunno

There are a few games here and there where you can change the action of the sticks to be left handed, but a lot of games don't generally have it. I know the Bad Company 2 demo does, and a good amount of shooters(not all or anything) do have a left handed option with sticks switched and what not. Other than that though, very few.

@rflx: I know a few lefties who all play their PC FPS with the mouse in their right hand. I guess they started with that style and got used to it.

Not saying you're playing it the wrong way or anything; it's definitely lame how limited most console games' control schemes are, and I feel your pain.

Oh man! I couldn't even imagine playing like that. But I guess anything is possible if you get used to it enough.
And yeah, not being able to switch stick controls is almost the only reason why I don't own a console. Controls just feels too damn awkward for me.

I'd recommend just using your right hand to aim from now on, and then you'd never have to worry about it again.  It takes a couple weeks to do something like that, but after that it just becomes habit.

it takes 21 days to make a habit so might want to try starting aiming with your right hand..

Nah, no need for that. I still don't own a console.
I do switch up my mouse hand once in a while, while working with graphics to prevent carpal tunnel, but never in games. I'm just too damn good of a shot with my left hand ;)

@rflx: Quite a few games allow you to switch the thumbsticks over. Usually the configuration is called "South paw" or simply lefty.

Weird. I'm left handed and can game fine with standard gamepad button layouts. You just have to learn to do it right handed, and it will come about. I've never heard of left handedness being such a handicap that it's impossible to utilize the right hand at all. All the time, left dominant kids are taught to write with their right hand and develop decent handwriting.

Yeah, I'm left-handed. But lefties who aim with their left and move with their right creep me the fuck out, no offense. Mouse, analog stick, wii remote: all done with the right hand. Seriously, what you're describing seems pretty fucked up. I'm sorry, I know you wanted empathy from your fellow southpaws, but I play video games only one way.

Most big name console shooters allow you to use a southpaw stick setup, which switches look to the right and move to the left.

As some have said, some games feature this, some don't. Most FPS games will let you swap sticks, but not the triggers. I don't know how in this day and age it isn't mandatory to allow full button remapping, FPS and 3rd person shooters especially need this.

I am left handed and I used to use my mouse with my Left hand and then I just started to use my right hand.
So now I can use either or(Left or Right hand)

I would have thought left handed people would just get used to using the normal configuration of analog sticks. (kinda like how left handed people learn to use a standard stick shift) But if you've done a ton of PC gaming where you can remap everything and you got used to it that way then I'm not sure. I know I used to play a lot of plane games where up and down are reversed so every time I pick up an FPS I have to invert the Y axis. I just can't do it the other way around.

@rflx: I'm not sure why I know this but I think Halo: CE had a remap option for lefties.

Oh that's cool, it seems that maybe console developers are starting to integrate remapping a bit more these days...
Maybe I'll get a console sooner than I thought.

Depending on which controller it is and how flexible the drivers are, you might easily be able to swap the sticks at the input level. Wired 360 controllers are the best choice because they are able to use the incredibly flexible XBCD drivers.

So what buttons do you use instead of WASD? IJKL? Well I'm left-handed too and have been playing FPS's with my right hand ever since ever since, and even for me at first, the switch to controllers wasnt easy, since it just feels so different. So it could be a compounded problem.

@thedj93: I actually usually just use the arrow keys. And remap various keys around for stuff, like ctrl, shift, numpad 0, delete, end, page down etc. Idunno, it works for me. Once in a while I use the numpad too.
