hey duders, i am looking for your collective expert advice in trying to find games that will continue on on their own without your input, that are not games like cookie clicker or clicker heroes or any kind of clicker, something with actual gameplay.

something like the sims, where you can set it up, they kinda do their thing, and every couple hours you can interact with it and check on it and still have a fun game to play, but then leave it be and it will keep going without you.

can you think of anything like this? i'm looking for something on steam preferably, any help is appreciated.

It's not quite what you're looking for, but you can set Defcon up on an incredibly slow (realtime?) mode and just slowly watch the world burn. Or even better, leave the AI to their own machinations and see who survives.

Neptune's Pride is a free-to-play multiplayer 4X space game based around the concept of leaving it and coming back to it. It's a super slow game that takes weeks to complete. The idea is you login, make your decisions and then leave it for 12 hours then come back to it later.

It's very focused on interaction with other players, though. There is no AI, it's all real players. And the game lasting for weeks and having to login and check it regularly means that it isn't for everyone, but it can definitely be a fun experience.

Dwarf Fortress? The length of time you can leave it without looking at it depends a bit on how much time you put in at the start.

I'd say that if you turn off invasions and start on a mega project, it could work, although maybe you'd want to set it to pause every (in-game) year or season to keep things ticking over.

Playing Neptune's Pride is actually a form of punishment in some countries.

Isn't Mountain pretty much exactly that?

Also, there's a lot of games where you can get bots to play against other bots.

After you set up the basics, a village in Banished can go unsupervised for quite a while, I imagine.
