Games with Surprisingly Good Stories

Have you ever played a game that you expected little to nothing from in terms of a good story but ended up blown away? For me, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness which I just finished was definitely one. After hearing that all it was was a super hardcore SRPG so I expected this game to have a super generic storyline but it ends up being awesome. But then, not only was the gameplay great but the story was amazing as well.

So have you ever had a game surprise you like this?

For me I was really surprised with the story of Eternal Darkness and Shadow Hearts 2. Also I like gigantic tits.

I was surprised by the storyline of  Gears Of War... didn't expect it to be that good. Then was blown away by it.

I think Red Faction had a great story, but most people just remember it for being the game that said "Look, you can blow holes in stuff!!!!".

This is going to sound dumb, but Phantasy Star Online. At the time I didn't even realize there was a story, then I played it again a year or two later and found out about Rico? I think that's what her name is.

SHE DEAD.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Boy did that game take me by surprise, and man do I love that series.

The Jak series. For a platformer it had a very well developed story.

Resident Evil 4 was incredibly deep.

God of War was deep, but Kingdom Hearts takes the cake.

 The Darkness.

Perhaps one of the few strong points to the game -- it was great enough for me to play through it despite the, in my opinion, mediocre gameplay.

That plot twist caught me off guard. I didn't even think twice over why he was pale white till that twist came along.

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare... all the other ones story's were okay but this is like a cool book/ movie!!!!!

I was just about to mention The Darkness. I'll admit I'm not so crazy about the whole underworld aspect of the story, but for the most part the story is great.

I thought that it was nuts that KOTOR had an awesome story. Just coming out of a lame movie rut, I wasn't expecting much entering the game.

A port with an entirely new story mode unlocked after you beat the first one! Etna Mode- where Etna really *does* kill Laharl and makes a prinny dress like him to avoid suspicion.

COD4's story was a lot better than I expected.

Call of Duty 4 had more story than I'd expect any military game to have.

When I started playing Ninety Nine Nights I saw it was just some stupid orcs vs. humans thing. But once I really got into it...Wow. I have to say it's got to be the best videogame story of the century. A battle between many evils, but which ones cause was more noble? It had it all..A vengeance saga. And a couple more vengeance saga's.

Jade Empire, the surprise twist completely caught me off guard.
KOTOR Also.

Definitely Portal.  I mean, they could have just shipped it as a unique action-puzzle game, but the inclusion of the story (and the general wit of the writing) helped make the game a pretty well-rounded package.

Assassin's Creed. I thought it was going to be OK but I loved the death confessions of the targets and how they built up the plot. It was very well done.

Bioshock didn't really have a good story, but had superb delivery of said average story. I don't know of many games with good stories...

God of war, Kingdom hearts, Cod 4

The Darkness, I expected a run-of-the-mill sort of story line, something which would only be enough to make me continues to the next level but surprsingly it was great. I think I am the only person on earth who loved that game.
