Dan is already prepping for a Witcher 3 vs. Metal Gear fight.
I don't see that happening. I imagine Witcher will end up in the top ten, but there's no way it's a serious contender for the top spot here. I think you mean that Dan is prepping for a Metal Gear vs anything fight.
This. There is more of a chance of Witcher 3 outright not making top 10 than it competing for the top spot. The top spot at this point is a question of if the post-launch Konami b.s. was enough to hurt that game with the guys enough for Mario Maker to overcome it. Other than that, it's up to Just Cause 3 and Fallout 4. Witcher 3 won't make top 5 given nobody's really passionate about it, putting it in that dangerous spot of getting cut because 6-10 tend to be the passion games of individual reviewers.
As for what to play prior to GotY and you really want to get through as much as possible, you only really have about 7-8 weeks to play stuff, so I'd avoid timesinks like Witcher 3 and MGS V unless you're going to just play a portion of it so you can bang out a bunch of smaller games. I'd start with heavy story games to avoid spoilers, which would mean:
- Undertale
- Life is Strange
- Tales from the Borderlands
- The Beginner's Guide
- Until Dawn
- Cradle
Then I'd give these a shot given you don't have to sink a ton of time into them to figure out what they are:
- Ori
- Axiom Verge
- Rocket League
- Splatoon
- Mario Maker
- Contradiction - Spot the Liar!
- Cities: Skylines
- Kerbal Space Program
- Mortal Kombat X
Finally, if you have time, dip your toe into these games, but don't wade in too deep or you won't play anything else:
- Bloodborne
- MGS V
- Witcher 3
- Fallout 4
- Just Cause 3 (due to it coming really late)
I'm sure Arkham Knight, the latest Ass Creed, Dying Light, and others will come up, but I don't think you'll even get through most of the above.
