My suggestion is to buy a desktop instead. Is there any real reason you want a laptop?

@Rinkalicous: Well i have a imac already, but the lack of games for that is a bummer! Specially having to look at all the games steam offers.

Depends what you're looking for.  The dell XPS series actually isn't too bad and if you buy their extended warrenty coverage you can just break it a couple years down the road and get a new one.

I almost bought an Alienware m11x the other day.  11 inch screen and its a powerhouse for how tiny it is.  I ended up just buying a 13 inch macbook pro though.  There are enough games on it to keep me happy when I'm out and about.  It's got enough power to run them at a decent rate and I can play any other games I want on my desktop at home.

Well, why don't you buy a desktop anyway? It'll be way cheaper, and unless you *really* want to play games on the go, is a way better option.

Buy a desktop instead. Of everything that I hear, it is nigh pointless to have a gaming laptop because of weight/cost/battery.

I got a "gaming laptop" after winning a tournament that I was signed up for and while being cool I never feel like taking it with me because, as you said, it's heavy.
I might as well just drag my desktop with me.

@Jonny_Anonymous: You won't find a decent one for cheap. You'll barely find a decent one, relative to a desktop anyway.

It depends on what games you plan to play and what budget you would describe as cheap. If you are just going to play League of Legends, Diablo 3, and other low system reguirement games, you can probably get away with an Asus laptop with a dedicated GPU, 1366x768 resolution screen, and decent battery life for ~$800. Games will play at medium-low settings. If you want to play an modern FPS game made within the last couple of years you'll need a budget +$1200 just to get a laptop that will run games at medium settings for only the next two years, at most.

I have a laptop that I play games on since I move around a lot. It's not really cheap, unless you consider $1000 cheap. It's the Lenovo IdeaPad Y470.

I'm fairly anti-laptop as the amount of money that you're paying for mobility is crazy. Two of my friends who travel often needed a powerful laptop so I suggested this model from Novatech. It's cheaper and better when compared to places like Cyberpower, PCSpecialist etc. and they're both happy with their laptops.

I'd be mainly playing RPGs  and SH games, not really in to FPS all that much

We really only need one post spamming, "hurrr get the desktop instead".

After that it would be really nice if only informed people who are actually interesting in listing good laptops posted.

@Jonny_Anonymous: Intel's HD graphics chipset is pretty good for indie games on steam. Maybe Team Fortress 2 and Diablo III/Starcraft II, but not much else.

Why don't you bootcamp it? If you're a student, you can get Windows 7 for just about nothing. I have a bootcamp installation of Win7 Ultimate and a Win7 pro installation in Parallels on my Macbook. Cost me $60, including the price of Parallels.

I'm not sure which model iMac you have, but they sport laptop GPUs, anyways. You'll be playing games just as well on your iMac in Win7 than you will on a medium end laptop with a dedicated GPU. At 1080p, that's low-med settings if you want a smooth experience.

Asus RoG laptops (G74 etc.) can be found on sites like newegg at the appropriate pricepoint (most bang for your buck) pretty often, and serve pretty much every need. They're heavy but meet expectations.

My issue with gaming laptops is that they overheat way too often. I couldnt play games for longer than 1.5/2 hours without the damn thing overheating and hard locking on me. I even bought a cooler pad and it still overheated the odd time. Last year, I had enough with it and bought a decent desktop for pretty much the same amount I paid for the bloody laptop. The desktop has overheated but that is when I was stressing it to get a feel of its horsepower. If I am cautious and adjust the fans correctly, it will never overheat.

For fuck sake. He is asking for a laptop not your personal opinions on a what a gaming rig should be. Guess what...some people have reasons to have a laptop. I like having a desktop replacement (powerful laptop that is about a 600-700 desktop) i cant take from place to place. I also have my gaming rig set up at home when im there.

Try a Asus g74, can get one for about 1,000 and it is a fantastic system. Runs everything out now. and does not look to need any replacing for quite a bit. And it has a super quiet fan, never gets hot, runs games like a champ with out even trying.

Hate that every time this topic comes up everyone screams just get a desktop.....Just answer the dudes question or leave it alone if you have such a hate for laptops.

@Patman99: That's a older system that sucks. Newer gaming rigs do not get hot.
