What's with the grim predictions? Is Double Fine in a poor financial position or something?

Anyway, I predict that:

  1. AC will take a year off. (Edit: I thought about it for more than a second, and yeah right!)
  2. Jeff won't like the new Call of Duty.
  3. Bloodborne will not be met with critical acclaim.
  4. The Witcher 3 launch will not be smooth.
  5. A remastered Bioshock Infinite for the new consoles will be announced.
  6. Either the new Mass Effect or the other Bioware IP will be officially announced with a release date in 2016.

I shall get my nipple pierced!

Wait I didn't read that title closely.

Judging by a recent hardware article I read it's possible we could see a slim Xbox soon but not a slim PS4. Something to do with how a 20nm die shrink means the xbox can downsize its large fan due to the difference in power consumption but the PS4 can't. I dunno it seemed to make sense.

Giant Bomb gets swotted somehow.

@militantfreudian: Been an odd year for them.

Spacebase was a bit of a failure.

They just laid off a dozen employees and cancelled a project.

And Double Fine adventure seems to be in a financial pickle and they havent even mailed out boxed games and blu rays yet.

Believe me, I hope they can turn it around. But I don't see Grim Fandango, DFA or Massive Challice being big financial hits. Hope I'm wrong.

@militantfreudian: Double Fine just laid off some people after cancelling an unannounced project. That being said, I somehow doubt they're going under.

In any case, predictions (not necessarily serious):

  1. Video games will actually start coming out for these new consoles in a volume that forces me to buy one as my computer becomes unable to handle the new stuff.
  2. Bloodborne will be the game that divides the Souls fanbase, moreso than Dark Souls II. Still gets like a 91 on Metacritic.
  3. Rare is officially shut down, ending with Phil Spencer setting an effigy of Banjo on fire during the Microsoft Press Conference while cackling madly. (Microsoft's share price goes up 3%)
  4. Jeff gives Mortal Kombat X 5 stars.
  5. Mortal Kombat X fails to make its way onto the site-wide top 10.
  6. Ubisoft admits every single one of their big games is the exact same, announces The Tom Clancy's WatchFarCreed, an open world action/stealth/driving game with a bunch of icons on the map, a story that squanders its own thematic potential and an awful PC port.
  7. Dan does something extremely stupid on camera.
  8. I am the only person on these forums who mentions Might and Magic: Heroes VII
  9. The internet continues to be on fire.

Double Fine will be... fine. They'll just Kickstart their way out of any troubles they have.

Seriously though...

  • Lots of remasters and compilations. Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection with beta access to Gears 4. For some reason I'm guessing Uncharted is going to get a compilation as well, with Uncharted 4 quietly delayed into early 2016.
  • Ubisoft will announce some "changes" to how they operate.
  • Instead of bumping the price back up the Xbox One will be $349 indefinitely. (And $449 for Kinect and 1tb models)
  • Lots of previously announced games will get pushed back into 2016. Such as Crackdown, Uncharted 4, and for some reason I think the new Zelda game will too.
  • Final Fantasy 15 is going to be even more divisive than 13. (Actually I think it already is...)
  • Mario Galaxy 3D will be a thing and exclusive to New 3DS
  • New Pokemon games. Probably not Gen 7 but rather sequels to X and Y.
  • PS4 will get a firmware update which adds PS2 and PS1 emulation. (And hopefully not fuck up systems again)
  • Driveclub might work, and Sony will offer a free game as compensation for those affected.
  • Steam Machines will flop

1. World peace will be achieved. Call of Duty will be forced to change to Call of Gandhi to keep up with this trend.

2. Peter Molyneux will make HaZe 2 where you fart in people's faces and kick chickens while in power armor doing drugs.

3. Jeff and Dan will find Tupac and ride a unicorn on a rainbow with him, while Alex and Vinny find Biggie Smalls and also ride a unicorn on a rainbow with him. This starts up the West/East coast Giant Bomb rivalry.

4. Ubisoft, EA, and Activision join forces to become a cheesy 90s movie corporate villain.

Gamespot will hire Jeff, Brad, Vinny, Dan, Drew, Jason, Patrick, and Alex. Rorie, on the other hand, will leave to personally create Alpha Protocol 3 (Skipping numbers will be all the rage in 2015).

Erm, but seriously:

  • There will be another Picross e game...
  • Gog Galaxy will launch and nobody but die-hard Gog users will give a shit.
  • People will continue to be extremely disappointed with most 'AAA' games.
  • The Witness still won't be released...
  • There will be some mediocre indie game that becomes a meme that people then become obsessed with.
  • Lots and lots of games-related Twitter drama.
  • Still no new Half-Life game...

I hope Double Fine get back on their feet. I'd really hate to see them go out of business.

@ikilledthedj: I'm not sure that the Bioshock games have the commercial viability of the Halo series. I'd be surprised if 2K or whomever made the effort to remaster all three games.

  • Nintendo will announce a Metroid game...or they won't. I don't fucking know anymore.
  • More Destiny content. More snarky comments.
  • People will keep complaining that CoD hasn't changed despite the fact those same fucking people have been complaining about that exact same thing for like the past 5 fucking years.

Two CD Project employees die of exhaustion trying to ship The Witcher 3 on time. They are posthumously added to the game as NPCs. The publicity of this memorial results in an overall net positive to public opinion of CD Project. This leads to EA, Activision and Ubisoft secretly planning to work their employees to death in an attempt to salvage the goodwill of the brands they destroyed in 2014. The truth will not be uncovered for years.

Ralph Baer will unfortunately pass, as we lose the father of video games.

Most AAA early year PS4 and XBONE releases delayed until fall. Dry spell across the big games, but indies continue strong.

Riding off of the success of smash, the Wii U outsells the other major consoles for the first few months of the year, but never quite closes the gap.

New Star Fox delayed until late 2016.

New Zelda announced for end of 2015. Not as open ended or big as people want it to be (not a Skyrim), but takes a lot of the original game's ideas a little more. Delayed into 2016.

Castlevania creator Koji Igarashi announces new partnership with North American indie game studio, my guess is Drinkbox or Cellar Door Games, launches Kickstarter to make a classic Castlevania game. Similar in gameplay, but draws from other style than just Gothic.

Wildstar goes free-to-play.

There will be no EA basketball game.

Giant Bomb hires another white dude in his late 20's-late 30's.

We don't hear anything about Mirror's Edge 2.

We get hyped up for announcement of Beyond Good & Evil 2 that never comes.

We don't hear anything about Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem.

More female developers are harassed out of the industry. An exodus of game developers from Twitter ensues.

Massive Chalice doesn't exit early access until winter 2015.

New Skylanders tanks and Amiibo doesn't really take off as the market reaches peak Toys to Life.

The new 3DS comes out in May, causes even more market confusion.

No games other than Xenoblade announced to be exclusive to the new 3DS.

Trails in the Sky Second Chapter delayed into 2016.

Harvest Moon confusion is sorted out, Harvest Moon games start being called Harvest Moon again.

Mighty No. 9 launches to middling reviews.

Persona 5 on PS4 is a janky mess, PS3 version blurry and framerate-y.

Persona 5 does not have a playable female protagonist, much to my chagrin.

Platinum announces a game being published by Capcom, universe implodes.

Capcom announces new fighting game franchise, Ultra Street Fighter IV comes to new consoles, fixing ridiculous framerate issues.

King of Fighters XIV announced and released.

Blazblue gets a new update, barely an update.

Persona 4 Arena and Ultimax mysteriously pulled from 360 and PS3 stores due to rights issues between Arcsys and Capcom.

Many download only games start disappearing from XBLA and PSN on 360 and PS3.

PSN on PSP shuts down, preventing people from downloading their games onto the system.

XBLIG shuts down.

That's about all I can think of right now.

I think these are all highly unlikely, improbable, and maybe impossible. Valve is not going to release a game without announcing it at least 7-8 months ahead of time. If it is Half-Life 3, they can get away with it. Anything else, and they would likely want to get some press out of it. So, that would have to be announced at the Game Awards in a week or in January or February. Unless its HL3, which is still highly improbably. Also, Danny and Mary are the best thing GS has going for them, in my opinion, and I don't think CBS would let GB have them unless GS was going down. I don't think the time is right for slim consoles. They need to work on games, first. Typically slim consoles come when you have a decrease in system sales and need to reinvigorate them. I think cross gen will die off. We are already seeing it happen.

So, this year, I think 1) no more cross gen, 2) We get a Bethesda game teaser (unless this happens at the Game Awards) but no release date, 3) Battlefront is delayed, 4) No Assassin's Creed this year.

After being spoon fed Anime for months, Dan will become the new GB Anime Editor.

The Division will have a bunch of interesting ideas and look amazing, but people will find it boring.

Double Fine, Harmonix and Iron Galaxy will merge and create a new superstudio to make Psychonauts 2. And it will be the best game.

GBeast will hire a new person to work in front and behind the cameras, possibly Storage Room Guy or Lady (as seen in the office tour video).

Overwatch will be called a Team Fortress rip-off. But because it's Blizzard it will become huge and make TF2 servers sad and deserted.

A sequel to Wild Guns will be released and it will set the world on fire. Jeff Gerstmann will give it 5 stars and be quoted as saying, "Wild Guns is the best sci-fi western shooter since ever because usually the wild west sucks, also Yoshi sucks."

My real prediction is that Nintendo will start doing stuff on iOS and it won't really matter.

Well i predict that video games go in a downward trend to the point where people dont care as much as they use to due to all the gamergate, broken launch dates and other stupid shit and MGSV and witcher 3 being the only "holy shit i need it now!" triple a games.

Woah, good catch, Jesus, I mean I suppose that it is easy to predict the death of someone who is up there in age, but that was really close to when it actually happened, crazy.

Here's an easy prediction.

Ubisoft will mess up something related to a pc release, doesn't matter what, they'll screw up something badly and if they address it at all it will be poorly.

Here is a hopeful one.

Fallout 4 gets a teaser, consists of slow pans, old time music, and a fad up to the face of a soldier that is part of the major faction of the game standing near some rubble of the major (Boston) location.

Here is a COME ON ALREADY one.

Officially the state of The Last Guardian is finally confirmed as canceled or in production.
Oh and we wonthear about HL3 at all, no Portal 3, maybe a L4D3, but that is more on Turtle Rocks shoulders and not Valves.

  • Witcher 3 is many outlets game of the year

Well these are some... uplifting predictions, I guess... Let me make a few of my own to get everyone even MORE excited.

Here are some GB specific predictions:

  • The Senior News Editor Giantbomb hires will be met with acceptance and fierce hatred in almost equal amounts (hatred will be greater)
  • Gamebomb.ru will continue to push the limits of games journalism and cover the really important stuff, while "Scoops" continues to cover only the "real" news.
  • Polls will still be broken
  • People will be disappointed when the programmer/designer Giantbomb hires do not replace Alexis, Ian, or Dave as in-front-of-the-camera personalities
  • Danny O'Dwyer and Mary Kish will probably both stay at Gamespot, though people will half-jokingly insist that GB poach them from across the hall
  • We as a community will be introduced to another Gamespot personality and, after one or two successful appearances in GB content, will insist that GB hire him/her
  • GBEast will step up its content production after hiring one or two more people next year, hopefully relative unknowns.

And here are my predictions about games and the industry as a whole:

  • The "sexism in games/the games industry" debate spirals even further out of control and comes no closer to arriving at a solution.
  • Zelda U will come out and receive critical and public acclaim. People will insist that Nintendo has breathed new life into the franchise and has taken one step closer to the modern era. One month later, people will have either forgotten the game or will be criticizing how far behind other open world games it is.
  • Halo 5 is released and receives critical acclaim, but fans continue to be wary of 343 after the Master Chief Collection catastrophe, so sales numbers suffer. Also, the people who buy it will walk away lukewarm on the whole experience. Multiplayer dropoff will be almost as quick as Halo 4.
  • Bungie continues to insist that Destiny is fine the way it is and releases expansions roughly the same length as The Dark Below.
  • Persona 5 is released to major critical acclaim. I will buy the game and be in the unfortunate group who, like Jeff, has become so attached to the Persona 4 cast that it's difficult to fall in love again. The game will still be great, but many will not care for it as much as Persona 3 or 4.
  • Battlefield Hardline bombs.
  • At E3, Yoshida will pull a Men in Black flasher out of his pocket and use it to make everyone forget about Drive Club, which will still be broken.
  • AC: Victory sells significantly worse than Unity, but will be a better game in every way.
  • Steam boxes will suddenly be on the market, but no one will know because of a lack of marketing.
  • Gaming on Linux will still not be a reality.
  • Call of Duty will continue to lose sales, and Activision might start to worry.
  • Console price drops across the board.
  • WWE Supercard 2 is released. Since Jeff has been talking about it on the bombcast for months, the game will actually sell well, as much of the GB audience will buy it as a joke.
  • Fallout 4 announced. The game will take place in Boston and appear exclusively on next gen consoles and PC.
  • 2015 will be the year that meaningful publishers finally abandon the 360 and PS3 and focus all their efforts on the new consoles. Unsurprisingly, this will reduce the amount of broken games to come out, though there will still be some.
  • No new footage of Kingdom Hearts 3

Ralph Baer will unfortunately pass, as we lose the father of video games.

Holy shitballs....

Woah, good catch, Jesus, I mean I suppose that it is easy to predict the death of someone who is up there in age, but that was really close to when it actually happened, crazy.

Not exactly something I'm proud that I predicted.... It was meant to be a sobering reminder that, hey, we're getting to the point where we are going to start losing the people who built this industry. Treasure them while they're still here. Obviously I was hoping that specific prediction wouldn't be true.

We are all sad for the loss of one of most important figures in the medium.
