Finally there's a list of games that are going to stop working when GFWL shuts down. While I know this list is not permanent (any company can change their mind) I do like getting a preliminary idea of all the stuff that's going to be worthless in my steam library.

I'll be losing these:

  • Dead Rising 2
  • Dead Rising 2: Off the Record
  • Dark Void
  • Lost Planet
  • Resident Evil 5
  • Dirt 2
  • Iron Brigade
  • Fable III
  • Gears of War
  • Halo 2
  • GTA IV (maybe)
  • Dawn of War II (Maybe)

So how many games are you going to lose?

All of the local game data will be accesible, but you won't be able to download patches, play multiplayer, and earn achievements through the GFWL client.

Too many. It's not even like these are some obscure games. Notable games of the past 4+ years, no longer working.

Dead Rising 2 + OTR

Unknown:

  • Bulletstorm
  • GTA IV

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon and Dark Souls, but it shows Namco trying to find a thing for it. Steamworks would be cool.

Like Brad, I am worried about the fate of my Viva Pinata. I've also got a disc copy of BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. They recently brought the PC port of that to steam and all they did was strip out GFWL and the functionality that goes with that. ie it has no online play and is basically what you would get if you had a copy of the GFWL version and no CD key. I think that was just some Korean company getting their hands on the publishing rights for that specific game and trying to make a quick buck. It's just a bummer situation, with people buying it anyway to try and show Aksys that there is interest in getting BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma released on PC.

I guess Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection used GFWL, but that was also a pretty horrible piece of software and the netcode was worthless, so this is just another complaint to add to the long list for that game.

I'll lose Vanilla Street Fighter IV and Super SF4 Arcade Edition, I suppose, but that's not really a concern, since I'm getting Ultra SF4. I guess Street Fighter X Tekken won't be so lucky though, not that I ever have anyone to play that with anyway ,_,

Uhh what else... From Dust? Resident Evil 5. Um... Did Devil May Cry 4 use it? I'm sure there's other stuff.

So Microsoft still haven't actually said anything about this either, right? So awesome.

  • Bulletstorm - who knows? Down as 'We've reached out but are still awaiting response.'
  • Gotham City Impostors - But that went F2P anyway didn't it? I haven't played it since before then, pretty fun game there for a bit though.

I downloaded Fable III for the first time a week ago after having it my steam library for years. I saw it was a GFWL game and just uninstalled it and went and bought a used 360 version for $8, because I just didn't want to have to deal with it at all.

Makes you think what will happen when Steam goes down. Without having to retain online servers for years on end I don't see how they'll cater to their users with over 300 games in their library.

Shit, I should probably play Fable 3 and Dead Rising 2 before anything happens. But then again, I'm pretty sure fans will find a way to bypass the GFWL DRM.

Well people actually like Steam. So I imagine that if/when it comes to that, either Valve keep their word about making games still accessible if the service should ever shut down, or unaffiliated third parties will work to provide a less legal solution and people will have to decide if they want to partake.

This, my 1080th post, brought to you by the all-new HD Resident Evil 4 HD edition in HD. ...HD!

Well that's what I'm curious about. Short of keeping servers up with their entire library indefinitely or telling users they have 2 months to download every game they own and back them up themselves somehow I don't see how they can make good on that promise. There are plenty of people with over 300 games in their library. How are you supposed to back that up? How will they work with zero authentication - at this point you'll be able to recklessly make dozens of copies for your friends or whoever.

Likewise I don't see how third parties will get involved in helping another third party that distributes their game. If anything, those publishers would rather have people turn to them and buy the same games over again.

It's an interesting notion and I don't see a reasonable solution to any of it - then again I can't really foresee a reason for Steam to shut down any time soon. Maybe if this whole SteamMachine thing completely bankrupts them somehow.

Arcade Edition is the only thing getting affected in my library, but they're switching to Steamworks so I'm practically getting an upgrade here if anything. I kind of wish they would do the switch now and get it over with though...

Hey! I might actually be able to play Dirt 3 when they kill off this shit show of a service! Spend 25 minutes trying to get the fucking thing to work properly last time, but GFWL wouldn't have any of it, so I just uninstalled it.

Is this about end-user license agreements? I have a physical copy. With a crack, the digital part of it is mine. The tangible stuff is mine anyway.

If this is about the online part of it, well, it's dead anyway and almost all the messages are spam. I invaded for the first time in months yesterday and the guy was idle. But it's a great game even without a community.

I suppose the only one i care about is Dark Souls and if it still works with an offline profile all is good.

I don't think i have any games that uses GFWL for multiplayer other than Dawn of War II and why would i want to play multiplayer anyway.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck. Shut down? I know it's not for certain yet, but that's a real slap in the face if that's the way it goes down.

I'll be losing:

  • Dead Rising 2: Off the Record
  • Dark Void
  • Resident Evil 5
  • Dirt 2
  • Iron Brigade
  • Fable III
  • GTA IV
  • Dawn of War II
  • Viva Pinata
  • Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition 2012: Electric Boogaloo

Really choked about Dawn of War II. I've had it forever but just never got around to playing it.

In all honesty, the only game I'll miss will be Dark Souls.

I'm sure wrappers are being coded as I type.

Dead Rising 2 + Off the Record

Dirt 2

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 + All DLC

Oh, and I'll add Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, just in case...

Most games with GFWL do not require it in order to run and therefore you wont lose anything.

I really hope Double Fine fixes Iron Brigade. They have had a stuttering issue in game which they acknowledged and said they couldn't fix BECAUSE of GFWL. So if they don't support the game after GFWL that would be pretty shittty. I would have played that game more but it is unplayable for me later in the games because it stutters every time you pick up scap. which is all the time.

As for Dark Souls, I think they mentioned they were looking into an alternative to GFWL?

A lot.

Like 10-15 games. I don't even want to think about how many. I know for sure my Dirt 2, and Dark Souls saves are probably gone. Likewise with a whole bunch of others. Hopefully Capcom gets their stuff together and fixes this because more than 5 games I have that have GFWL are Capcom titles.

Luckily my copy of Viva Piñata is for the Xbox.

GTA IV and Dark Souls are the two I'm most concerned about, and even then, I'm not THAT concerned about GTA IV.

Meanwhile, our store will no longer have Dawn of War II I think, as well as Company of Heroes and a few others (Gears of War and Halo 2 I believe). Most of those are fine to lose, but Company of Heroes is a real sting. People love that game.

All of these games should still work with a third party exe.
