How do I know this place is different? Because of the staff. Jeff, vinny and all of the others really know gaming inside and out. This website is almost a one of a kind in the sense of wiki content and user driven submissions.
Don't worry about spam (it's in beta - day 1 still)
The staff is NOT worried about spam/new features as much as they are worried about bugs/glitches/bandwidth. This site is brand new, and there are certain steps that need to be taken. Crap posting will slow down - just remember though, this is OUR community - we drive it. If we water it and give it care it will grow into a towering tree. If we ignore it and hide it in the dark, it will die.
We can and should expect:
- Trolls (attention whores)
- Post Whores (its a brand new website, people want to be noticed first)
- Fanboys (because it's still the internet)
But if we can accept these issues, like every forum, and work on becoming a friendly community and separating ourselves from the stigma of Gamespot, then this becomes ours, not theirs, but ours.
Be friends, be mature, be rational. =)
Giant Bomb - Our Community
Jax u r a fag. Lololol.
Just kidding. In all honesty, I'm really brushing the whole forum off for the first week or so. The overall excitement of the newness is the primary cause of the infection. Once the kiddies calm down, everything should be running smoothly. That and we need some mods, but that will also come with time.
You're still a fag though.
Agreed.
I think that in these early days it's more of an issue of perseverance than anything else. The good posters will continue as those who came over just because they got banned everywhere else will slowly get weeded out. It is still important to note that we shouldn't go around spamming just because we can though, every role in the world has a set of responsibilities and this is no different. Be respectful and just maybe others will respect you.
Ya people have to remember that everything is still running beta. Soon enough things will be cleaned out there is enough mature intelligent people to make this a good community. Things are going to go through alot of changes here I would assume just a little wait and things will happen.
I've been with Giantbomb since about day 2 when this website actually started way back months ago. I've listened to every podcast, and watched every video.
This is a really small, but awsome community, and I like it.
I also like it because its like this website is ours too, becuase we have partial control over it.
by the way everyone rushed to this thread because of the IRC chat which you can be a part of.
the server is: irc.gamesurge.net and the channel is #GiantBomb
okay enough publicizing that for now...
I honestly can't wait for the traffic to die down a bit. It's really moving too fast for any sort of community to form, unless posters have a pre-existing relationship on GS. It's not that a fast-moving site is necessarily going to stop a community from forming, but I'd rather see a representation of the normal posting speed of this forum.
In the meantime, I suppose we can sort of kick back, shoot the breeze a bit, and laugh at the sheer weirdness of it all.
I agree and i want to say... THIS IS GIANT BOMB... no more mindless mods, good people and great games!
Ya I followed GB from the start, when it wasn't in beta but I never posted (didn't like the set-up at the time). It's definitely a great community, and the website has a unique design that caters not only to the staff but to users alike. Everyone will find their niche, and websites will burst with user-edited content that will far surpass the likes of similar websites in terms of game reviews. Once the community solidifies I expect everyone will have a basic knowledge of the other users.
Hahah Lou.
I'm just trying to bring people down to my simple level of thinking. There's always a solution to an issue, if you care to look for it. I like a lot of people on this forum. We all talk in IRC and we've come to some agreements on the fact that GB is a special website. And since its content is driven by the user, why not the direction the community goes as well?
"Hahah Lou.There's an IRC? Man, I feel like the guy on the outside now. I wanna play with the other kids too...

I've always stayed away from frequenting forums. Two main reasons being elitist "vets" who enjoy talking down or completely ignoring people with a smaller post-count, and trolls who offer nothing but hostility and insults to an otherwise civil conversation. Hopefully this site will be different, which is why I'm giving it a chance.

How do these newfangled internet chat thingies work again? >_<

Honestly, I hope this "GIANT BOMB IS THE GAME SPOT BAND USER SANCTUARY!" phase ends soon. I was never an active poster over at GS, and honestly could care less about the "stick it to the man" attitude I've seen around these forums thus far. But I have high hopes for this site, I really enjoy the Wiki style community. Its like, Wiki, Video Games, and Face book had some kinda sick 3 way love child and out popped Giant Bomb and a deer head.

I'm certain that Gerstmann and crew haven't gained any affection for poor behavior during their exodus. If banned GameSpot users refuse to behave, they'll just get banned again. I hope that they'll take their punishment as a sign that they should be more respectful all around, but we'll see. And you can't expect too much from a forum that has seen over eight thousand people sign up in a twenty four hour span... gotta give it time to find a rhythm.
Im just glad this site is up and running...in beta form atleast, also it stretches all the way to the edges of my imac :) so its a winner already!!! no borders.
I agree -- we shouldn't get worked up. There are a lot of us that know what we're doing. Let's just keep doing our thing and let the staff deal with discipline. Then we'll be able to really start forming a community.
I mostly can't wait for the day until people stop connecting this site to a website that shall not be named. Giant Bomb needs its own identity and community. It also is in serious need of some moderators because the spam is getting completely out of control.
Well said. If we ignore the attention whores and keep the site flowing we can get through these beta stages and become a great site. Look at how many members we have on day 2. Think in one month where we will be. Once we have mods and the spamming calms down this can be a great site. We all just need to do our part to keep it from going downhill like GS is starting to go.
