GiantBomb Android Application [ALPHA]
Looks good.
_____________
How much experience do you have and or what experience is needed to create an android application?
I think someone should sticky this for this guy, just so people can find it and give feedback, it's alot of work he's doing for free here.
" @harris Looks good. _____________ How much experience do you have and or what experience is needed to create an android application? "If you know java pretty well, you can get into it very easily. Android has great developer resources on their site: http://developer.android.com/guide/index.html
You should learn java before jumping into that, though. Java is very easy to learn if you already know C++, by the way.
It's also very helpful to have a little experience in XML, a lot of interface stuff in android is XML based.

I just ask because I am hoping to do Computer Science at university and I would love to be able to do something like an android app whilst there." @harris Looks good. _____________ How much experience do you have and or what experience is needed to create an android application? " @p4ddym1607: Yea, if they teach any kind of java or C++ you should be able to jump right into android development. "Pretty sure they will be using Java as the 'teaching' language. At least they do at most colleges and universities.
Thanks for this, will be picking it up when i get my new HTC Hero in January.
One question - When you release this fully (i.e. not alpha) will you be charging for it? and who gets the fees - you or GB or a split? Or is this too far into the future?
Sorry that I've been MIA. Monday and Tuesday are my days off work - aka achievement whoring time (and today was a good day for achievements). Either way, I'll be getting back on with the testing on this app when the updates come out.
Also, I totally think we should get this stickied for a little bit of time, just so we can get GB EVERYWHERE!
I talked to Harris last night and provided him with some code that I used to create my list layout, if he decides to use it the video list will probably look something like this:
It would be nice if the .apk's were uploaded so I could try them out on the emulator as I don't currently have an android phone.
But whatever.
Version 1.1 is out!
1.1 - big update
- Media controls
- Greatly improved interface, including video thumbnails
- No autostart, to allow for buffering
- Code optimizations

" This is awesome :U I'm mad close of getting a droid as of now. Taking java classes at school doesn't make it any worse ;) Maybe I can peek into this when it's open source'd and learn a thing or two ^^ Hats off to you, Harris! "
Source code is now up at the google code page: http://code.google.com/p/giantbomb-android/issues/list

Thanks again to everyone testing it.
" @jakob187: That's really strange. Maybe try restarting your phone? Also try using spacebar to play the video, and that might bring up the video controls."When I pull up the app, it'll give me the list with the thumbnails, and then I'll click one of them. It comes up with the white bar on top saying "Tap and press play...". Tap the screen, and it's black, then I get a force close. I restarted the phone and I'm still getting the same thing. I did get the QL for Way of the Samurai 3 to pop up for a second, and then I had to do something. My standby popped on after a minute, and it froze the app.
Also, the top video on the list always has the wrong thumbnail for me unless I scroll through the list quickly and come back up.
It does freeze up, however, if I have a text come in and check that...or an e-mail. = /
Regardless, your work and dedication to this has been tremendous, sir. Greatly appreciated!
" @harris: Still on 3G. I've gotten it to work a couple of times now, but I will still get force closes once in a while or the occasional "no controls coming up". However, it's become less of an issue finally and I've got videos coming up more often. Maybe it's just the loading speed on 3G. @poserdonut: And yea, it probably is the threads :P

@Luke: I assume you didn't experience this issue? Thanks for testing. "
Lol, but seriously, after testing some more I do also get force closes like him every once in a while... but it's not such a big deal.
However, it still freezes up whenever my Droid goes into sleep mode (which is only when I pause the video anyways). = /
nice app but i hate my droid trying to get my iphone back. i unlocked my g1 for att and i regret ever leaving the iphone behind...
