Giantbomb Community Top Ten Games of the Year

Well here it is folks, there were a total of three hundred and twenty three people who submitted their usernames to be tabulated! Thanks to everyone who submitted! well, everyone excepting these people:

You effed it up! Either you typed your username in wrong, you didn't create a list, or you managed to pull of some sort of wizardry like devilb0y (seriously, how did you... what?) I apologize for not including your lists.

Scoring went as follows: 10 points for being number 1, 9 points for being number 2, 8 points and so on until we reach number 10, which is only worth 1 point.

When I say "distribution" I mean how many people had the game as their number 1, 2, 3 and so on. A game with a distribution of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 would mean 1 person had it as number 1, 2 as number 2, 3 as number 3, and so on.

So here we go, the GB Community's Top 10 Games of the Year... starting with number 1 being...

	1. Portal 2 PORTAL 2! With a total of 1807 points. The distribution was as follows: 44 53 45 41 16 13 11 9 5 1 meaning 44 people had it as their #1, 53 had it as their #2, and so on.
	2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Trailing oh so closely was Skyrim at 1755, only 52 points away. 85 42 31 16 13 8 7 3 2 8 Interestingly, you can see that twice as many people voted for skyrim to be their #1, but the numbers dwindled rapidly. Whereas in Portal's case the distribution was fairly strong all the way through.
	3. Bastion Next is Bastion at 1146, a pretty substantial drop. 20 28 23 31 16 22 13 4 11 1
	4. Saints Row: The Third Aaaaand then we have SR3. Yes, that's right, #4. Trailing bastion closely at 1050 34 27 19 17 15 9 7 4 8 5 More #1 spots compared to Bastion, but once again loses steam. Honestly? It's probably just because not enough people played it. I'm confident it would have placed much higher if it just got a bit more penetration. Not that it's really lacking in that regard.
	5. Batman: Arkham City Arkham City takes the number 5 spot at 914 11 15 21 17 28 21 14 11 9 2 If I had the time, I'd make little bell curves showing the distributions. You can plainly see that Arkham peaks in the middle. A fun game for many, but even for those who played and enjoyed it, the high was a bit low.
	6. Deus Ex: Human Revolution At 612 is Deus Ex. 5 6 16 17 20 9 9 14 5 8 Even more than Arkham, you can see Deus Ex peaking in the middle then dying off again.
	7. Dark Souls Now here's a funny one. Dark Souls comes in at 541 points total with a distribution of: 21 16 7 8 3 5 1 5 4 5 Unlike Arkham and Deus Ex, Dark Souls takes top spot for the people who enjoyed it, having most of its distribution being towards the upper end. Not enjoyed by all, but those who like Dark Souls like Dark Souls A LOT.
	8. Dead Space 2 Dead Space 2 has the most even distribution out of all these games and has a point total of 534. 11 7 10 9 15 7 8 12 8 9 What that's supposed to mean I don't even know.
	9. L.A. Noire L.A. Noire takes 9th at 503 points. 8 7 4 13 11 21 16 18 16 A distribution that puts it a little on the lower end of the spectrum, but still a respectable showing.
	10. Gears of War 3 And finally Gears of War 3, which placed #1 on NO ONE's list but was represented well in all the other spots. 439 points 0 3 10 12 11 12 18 7 12 5
	11. Mortal Kombat And guess what, just like in the bombcast, Mortal Kombat takes the honorable 11th place. 376 3 4 5 8 10 7 10 14 12 13

That is A LOT of data. I would've entered my list in, but I still have about ten games sitting in front of my TV (game store was shutting down and i got great deals, also Christmas).

I bypassed making a personal top ten list this year because I missed so many titles this year. Just wouldn't feel right to me.

Of what I have played, Portal 2's my GOTY by far. I think it goes without saying that I'm thrilled to see a general agreement in the community, even if it's not entirely unexpected.

Whoever put Back to the Future in their list, you are a magnificent, wonderful creature. I heart you.

That is some comprehensive data, very neat. It's interesting how much giantbomb likes Bastion and Saint's Row the third. Other community's don't seem to share that love.

I missed like 90% of the titles I wanted to play this year. Didn't stop me from making a list anyway. I played a few indie games that I liked at least. It's not about what games you didn't play but wanted to, it's about what games you did play, and enjoyed. No? Even if it's just 3 games or whatever.

Clearly that just shows how we have better taste than those other communities do.

I wasn't the only one with Half-Minute Hero on there. I was kinda assuming I would have been. Anyways, I think that list turned out pretty good. I really like 9 of those...I'm sure I will like all 10, but I haven't got to play Saint's Row yet.

Certainly, and there's absolutely no harm in making a list from that viewpoint. Helps the data set. This year, though, I just felt like I missed so much more than usual, to a rather unsettling level. Of the top 25, I've played through Portal 2 and DiRT 3. I'm only now beginning to work through Bastion and Saints Row: The Third, and hopefully Batman: Arkham City will follow in the near future.

Had I thrown together a list, it probably would have been:

1. Portal 2
2. Forza 4 is the best racing game
3. Other games were fun too, I guess

Which...yeah, I could've done that, but man that would have felt weird.

Props to whoever put Groove Coaster on their list, because I totally forgot that game came out this year, and would have put it on mine if I had.

Probably am still going to edit my list now, because I can.

I was the one other guy who had it on. I figured I would be the only one too.

It's kinda depressing that Uncharted 3 is at #13. That game definitely should have been better than UC2, but sadly isn't.

8 of my games made it on the list. I guess I will have to check out Deus Ex but i know I'll hate it. Surprised on 300+ did a list. common BG community.

Thanks again for the effort. I'll take Ghost Trick sliding in at 15th as a victory in and of itself, seeing the competition.

In general, though - hail video games.

Pretty happy with the results. When I made my list I hadn't bought Bastion yet but if I had it definitely would have been in my top 10.

Oh, I dunno, I think 300+ is a pretty respectable number for a community thread asking people to do work. Now that the code's done I can plan for this even further in advance and maybe get a bit more attention directed at it.

To everyone that allowed games like Catherine, The Witcher II, and Ghost Trick to come in ahead of Modern Warfare 3, I want to thank you for being bright, shining examples of humanity.

hmmm, I wanted to do one of these but usually the staff does it, so I figured it was still coming....

Thank for this again. 300+ is a pretty decent number to get some good results - was interesting to see what everyone was into and the break down, so thanks for that. I literally just completed Bastion - think it would have been 2nd behind Portal 2. Hope to something like this again next year if not from GB themselves - I think there's so much cool/interesting stuff that could be done with the stats when you've got a big data set and the List feature makes it really easy and intuitive to do.

The final results are pretty interesting. Thanks for doing this man!

This a near perfect list! Batman was given it's due here! I can't believe MK got pushed out to 11 again haha, personally I wouldn't have Deus Ex on this list but that's just me. What a great result. Grats on all the hard work.

@ThatFrood: Again, thanks for doing all this since I probably would've missed it at least a little bit if there hadn't been any community lists. I'm especially glad you did include the whole list of votes - I always find that very fascinating! Very surprised about Portal's and Bastion's position. Portal I just don't care for personally even though it appears to be very well made (and has a funny reference in New Game+ Bastion...). But good to see that Bastion really struck a chord with plenty of people everywhere. Here's to a successful future for Supergiant games.
