I got my old PS3 up and running again recently. They kept the store open but I dunno how long they’re going to keep it open.

(also I don’t have a PS4 or PS5) :P

There's a good collection of the classic Doom games, including Final Doom and The Master Levels, called Doom Classic Complete.

I also love the Soldner-X games, Amiga style euroshmups. Very German and very fun.

Team 17 also put out a great collection of classic Alien Breed games on the PS3 and Vita, it's just called Alien Breed (there was a reboot in the late 2000s called Alien Breed Impact/Assault/Descent, which are also on PS3. Not as good but decent too, those three are also part of a collection called Alien Breed Trilogy on PSN).

Datura if you want some weird experimental Demoscene stuff, and Thexder Neo if you want a remake of a pretty unique late 80s mech platformer where you can transform into a plane.

Also, get the launch version of Dragon's Dogma while you're at it. Dark Arisen is good and all, but the original's theme song is worth the price of admission alone.

Not sure what you have in your collection so im going to name some big games as well:

The infamous games and DLC where good.

the Uncharted games

The Last Of Us

Super Stardust HD

I think you can still buy Demons Souls on PSN, but the online is turned off now

The Sly collection i believe is till stuck on the PS3 so you might as well

The Ratchet & Clank and Jak and Daxter collections are worth looking into

Ico and Shadow of the colossus collection

Metal Gear Solid 4 and the HD collection if your into those games, and also stuck on ps3

Motorstorm games are worth looking into

Killzone 2 and 3 where ok. But shooters being shooters i don't know if they still hold up.

People dig Tokyo Jungle, which i haven't personally played but is also stuck on ps3 and is usually recommended

puppeteer is another game i haven't personally played yet but people talk about

and there are a good bit of ps1 and ps2 games on there, but i don't think there is anything special about them so you might not want to spend your money on the PSN versions.

Im sure there are alot more but that's what i got off the top of my head. I would also recommend using a site like this to browse the store and find what you want first, because the last time i used the PSN store on ps3 it was basically broken. So find stuff on google and such, then just search the store.

I have all the latest consoles, but I still keep my PS3 handy when I have the itch to play games I bought 10 years ago and in some cases some I bought recently on PSN. I've mothballed my PS4 and Xbox 360 but my PS3 still holds court next to my PS5!

I really liked Dead Nation. Played through it both solo & co-op, was fun both times. Wish HouseMarque would make a follow-up for the PS5~

And since Dead Nation was mentioned, i have a code that has been sitting in my e-mail for years probably from a class action lawsuit that i believe is good till 2099. So @blergh you get first dibs if you don't have it and want it just ask, and if not any rando is free to ask after and have it.

also I’ve been playing thru echochrome and titan attacks on the ps3

they are both very good

echochrome boggles my mind with its super cool perspective stuff

Titan attacks is a pretty neat and fun space invaders-esque arcade shooter

@blergh: Hey, I just played through both the echochrome games recently, they are a lot of fun. I totally forgot the sequel was PS Move required. But luckily I had that set up already because I boot up some of the light-gun games on PS3 here and there. (of which it actually has a pretty solid library!).

My obscure PS3 download recommendation is Mamorukun Curse! , I don't think it came out on any other platforms in the West. It's only 5 bucks, and a fun shoot-em-up in the vein of something like Pocky & Rocky . It's a G. Rev game, so you know it's legit!

@fisk0: Yeah, those Soldner-X games are really good horizontal shooters. They put out a Definitive Edition of X-2 on PS4 with some tweaks and additions that I have a played quite a bit of.

Should I play soundshapes? It looks cool but with the community levels being gone forever I dunno if it would be worth the buy.

A couple standouts on my ps3:

-Renegade Ops

-Tokyo jungle

-Resident evil code veronica x (HD?) is still the most high res version available if im not mistaken. And has some dynamic lights added and stuff. Its not like the one on ps4.

-The last guy

-Dark mist

-Battlefield 1943 is still online and active on ps3!

-Far cry 3 blood dragon

-Both bionic commando rearmed games. The first is the best but second one is fun too if it isnt too expensive.

-Shank 1+2

-Outland

-Hard corps: uprising

-Tales from space: about a blob & blobs attack

-Stacking

-Shatter

-Virtual-On hd (Japan psn store)

-Raystorm hd (Japan psn store)

But it might be worth being aware of "the c-bomb" of the ps3 if you're planning to still purchase games for it online. if anyone doesnt know what it is: Hikikomori media on youtube has a couple great videos on the subject.

And saw someone mentioning demon souls not being able to be played online anymore...thats not entirely true. You only have to input a specific dns adress in your ps3 network setting and you can still play online through a fanmade server.

Same goes for a bunch of different games, last I checked there was a "beta" to get warhawk up and running again in that way as well. Warhawk was so good. Some of the best multiplayer fun ive had.

@blergh: I personally really loved sound shapes, it was a fun platformer with incredible music. And the challenge levels were so satisfying to complete.

I'll tell you what doesn't hold up, the Resistance: Fall of Man series - oy vey! What a bunch of stinkers those games are in retrospect. You never see people clamoring for remakes of those games, but the end of teh PS3 era most pople were trying to forget those games existed. I would say Killzone was not teh greatest shooters on teh platform, but the game play and stories were good enough.

I'll definitely throw out support for Super Stardust HD, Shatter, and Dead Nation (which always felt like it was too easily dismissed by gaming podcasts).

Keeping it kinda PSN-centric, I'll also recommend Pixel Junk Eden and Flower, if you want/need chill games.

Folklore is a really neat RPG / monster collector with two characters that both play differently and have separate storylines.
