This is not at all the Lego Harry Potter you think it is.
This is not at all the Lego Harry Potter you think it is.
Lego Star Wars. Lego Indiana Jones. Lego Batman. Now try this one: Lego Harry Potter. Rolls right off the tongue, no?

CVG seems to think so. They're reporting J. K. Rowling's boy wizard extraordinaire will be the next franchise to get the cutesy building-block treatment with a Lego-focused action game, though no specific sources or substantiation are listed.

You may be aware the Half-Blood Prince movie was pushed back to next summer, and Lego games have a habit of finding their way to store shelves just in time to coincide with some other big, related mass-media release. So odds on this one arriving around the middle of next year, if it exists at all, are high.

The franchise definitely has the right characters to fit all the existing Lego-game archetypes.

  • Tough character with melee attack: Hagrid
  • Female with exceptional jumping powers: Hermione (with Wingardium Leviosa, natch)
  • Tiny person who can fit through tight spaces: Dobby
  • Characters who can build objects with their minds: Damn near everyone

I'm unashamed to admit a rabid appetite for the Harry Potter books in their time, but I can't express a similar interest in a new Lego version of the franchise. As I noted in my Lego Indy review, this series has gotten more than a little formulaic over its last several installments. I'd like to see something new happening with Lego games next time around, but then, this series was probably never meant for you and me in the first place. That we were able to enjoy even the first several of them feels more than anything like a happy accident.

It makes sense. It fits in with the lego brand perfectly.

But LEGO Indy was the shit!!!  All the other ones were ho-hum.  Batman wasn't much fun because there weren't any "memorable moments" that could really be parodied.  Harry Potter, you can find them.  The LEGO games only work if they are based on something focused and solid, something that already has a set story that we all know.

Ok this whole Lego thing was cool when it started but really, they need to stop. Before this turns into Dynasty Warriors.

My hubby has Lego Indy. To be honest, it frustrated me just watching him play, yet a Harry Potter one sounds strangely appealing!

Well there's enough content to use I guess. I wonder if a potential sequel would be released after the 7th and 8th films, or whether they'll do four games with two in each.

They might base it off the books and just let all the kiddies know what happens in the seven books right off the bat.

Totally surprised, never would have seen this coming.
Really, a Lego game based on a popular film. Who would've guessed.

I think lego games are better for their charm and amusing retelling of the story then for their gameplay, which isn't just blatantly the same every time, it's never really that GREAT. It feels good, and its easy to get into, but it really wasn't THAT spectacular. I think they should put more money into the films and the actual games, where the REAL potential lies, and stop making these damn Lego games without SERIOUSLY rethinking the gameplay. Like, make a third person shooter lego game! I dunno, but something different and interesting.

Oh yes, Lego Pulp Fiction. That would be the shit.

It better have better wand/magic mechanics, otherwise it'd be pretty damn sad to see Harry Potter running around, punching people in the faces.

Have yet to play either of the other games to their full extent though.

Predictable but I will probably love it. I always love the LEGO games, no matter the unoriginality and same formula over and over.

I'm down for this. I'm still working towards 1000pts in Lego Indy. It's quite time consuming to do so.

I'm not sure about Lego Halo, since the Lego games are trying to appeal to kids, and Halo is rated M.

It seemed natural that they would take on Harry Potter.  I wish they would do a LEGO Lord of the Rings.

Lego Star Wars was all the Lego I needed in my gaming diet, thank you very much.

Plus, Harry Potter doesn't have the same appeal to older audiences that Indy Jones or Star Wars did.

This doesn't surprise me in the slightest. They've had Harry Potter sets for years now.
As for future games, there were Spider-Man sets about the time the first movie came out, but I think Mega Bloks has that license now and Lego is kinda in with DC currently.
Maybe they'll get it back for the next films. I'm sure they can extend the Harry Potter brand for at least seven iterations.

At least it raises my gamerscore ;)

What's funny is I still haven't canceled my subscription to the lego magazine.  I've been subscribed since I was about 8 years old haha.  I can tell you the last magazine's front cover showed some of those bionicle characters riding on vehicles.

They've had the Potter license for a while. I'd expect more than one game from it due to the length of the series. A LotR games would be nice, but I wouldn't expect it until you start seeing some LotR Lego sets in stores. Don't hold your breath.

I don't see an issue in theory with any Lego game, but I do agree with some who point out that it is just going to be the same game with different characters.  That cookie cutter approach is what always brings them down.  It is like a movie franchise, the first movie is sensational, the second can go either way (like Aliens was great, Predator 2 was meh), the third is starting to test the patience a little, the fourth was jsut one bridge too far, the eighth, well now you are watching Police Academy and need a life.

So, again agreeing with some here, they need to totally vary the game style.  Not that it is ever going to happen, but if they totally transposed GTA IV with Lego, took out the swearing and toned down the violence, I would get that long before the actual GTA IV game.

It makes perfect sense from a business standpoint. Both franchises sell like mad and the license lends itself to the LEGO format pretty well (if I do say so myself).
