Has gaming shook the whole "nerdy-antisocial" vibe yet?

No. I'm still an antisocial nerd who loves games after two decades of practically nothing but them.

There's still stigma about people who play video games as their main hobby.  Saying that one plays WoW, Madden, CoD or any other mainstream game won't make you seem as though you fit in the "loser nerd" group to the general public, but if you say that you enjoy Etrian Odyssey 3 to those same people, you'll get weird looks and you'll be seen as the "loser nerd".

Since I basically fit the stereotype in many ways except for physically, the "vibe's" never really bothered me much, though.

No. But, as stated above...it's not that gamers are more likely to be anti-social...it's that being anti-social makes you more likely to be a gamer, kinda?

True, but those gamers are, and each category makes up a majority of the other.  If that makes sense...

I'll try to find the study that was done on this.

Depends what games you play. At the moment it's totally socially acceptable to play CoD, it's what all the cool kids do. However as soon as you say you say you play WoW you become a retard in most people's eyes.

Although you can find statistics that will back up anything, it makes sense that a hobby that doesn't have much of a social element to it attracts less sociable people (XBL doesn't count as sociable, real life contact).

No, as most games don't contain the "mainstream" appeal as other forms of mediums do. Most would dismiss games as juvenile and escapist entertainment, and they're right for the most part. However, I think that what gives video games their charm the way most John Carpenter and George R. Romero movies have. Plus, some games in the past had artistic storytelling that rival mediums such as books and novels. It's popularity as an artistic medium is actually slowly growing. As indie games such as Braid and Limbo have shown. Even a lot of mainstream games provide artistic elements into their games, especially games like BioShock, Silent Hill 2, and Grand Theft Auto IV.

However, by the way most gamers act these days, who can blame them. I'm not stereo-typing all gamers in general (I don't fall into the stereo-type), but sometimes gamers act fanatical to their beloved medium. They can very elitist to non-gamers and gamers alike. Which can breed that negative perceptions most non-games have towards others. However, most people need to learn that not everyone falls onto the "anti-social" gamer stereo-type

Hell no! I thought it was a basic fact that non-gamers know absolutely nothing about gamers. That's why you see shitty game parodies (if I have to hear GameStation one more fucking time) and "people playing games" being interpreted as "let's wave the controller all over the fucking place, like the things are filled with jingly sounds." Oh, and I know this is obvious, but it all started LONG before motion control was even considered mainstream.

It definitely depends on what game you're playing. If you're playing a game by any other name then Call of Duty, Halo, Madden, or Facebook then you are a weirdo who plays those awful things called video games.

Lately when people stereotype gamers they choose either "Nerdy antisocial" or "Loud obnoxious homophobic". It hasn't shook the old image, there's just another option.

No way, I cant tell people that I am going to school for game Design because I get weird responses. I have to sorta talk around it and give them more general explinations because all they will hear is "Yo I'm going to school for video games and I'm a nerd :D"

Studies aren't meant to "prove" anything, they're just a collection of statistics to shed light on a subject.

In any case, I never said that all gamers are antisocial, so why are you trying to argue with me?

Kind of. While I can say with certainty that at least 80% (if not more) of the males in my high school play video games a la Call of Duty and Halo, I would say that far, far, far, fewer play anything resembling niche titles. Of course, mentioning something like X-COM or Demon's Souls at a social event is an excellent way for people (especially girls) to ignore you, which I don't especially recommend.

Gamers are probably the most social people out there. You talk to dozens maybe hundreds of people everyday from all across the world to co-operate and complete a fixed goal.

That's pretty social IMO.

I study games design at university, and it's possibly the biggest cockblocker going. Referring to it as 'designing & developing high-end interactive media in widely distributable format' however, has garnered slightly better results.

But not much.

Funnny enough, if you live in Korea and play anything on a console, that is seen as really wierd.  Millions of Starcraft players watching Starcraft on TV but owning an XBox is strange.

I'll agree with you to a point, but even people who are "social" and talkative online may still lack all of the skill that require him to function in society itself, i.e. face-to-face conversation.

For example, would you consider a 400-pound guy who lives in his mom's basement and plays WoW with other people (with a mic) but never goes outside to be "social"?  It's an extreme example, but I'm just throwing it out.

Nerdy antisocial people continue to create arbitrary labels to separate themselves from their now popular hobby like "true gamer", "hardcore gamer" etc. Playing videogames in itself is not really something people call nerdy anymore.

I see your side of the argument, but that's really public society. Also, this would probably be the non-gamers argument. In general terms of social interaction (two people communicating with each other in any form) I'd say my side still stands.

Err, hate to break it to you but most hobbies are welcoming for the socially inept as most of them allow and encourage time spent alone concentrating on your hobby of choice.  This is as true for collectors as it is for marathon runners who train every day as it is for for Trainspotters as it for... well you get the picture.  The idea that gaming is any more or less social then any other hobby is a false analogy.

I suppose, but it seems that more socially inept people will get into gaming/comic books than something else.  Or maybe that's just the stereotype.

I read a Cracked.com article talking about this. It brought out some statistics or something that gamers have the most sex or whatever. I mean we're definitely not antisocial, and so many people play games now that it's just stupid to generalize with this kind of statement.
