Has GB considered adding a "playback speed" option to the in-house video player?

When I find myself with a backlog of GB premium videos like I do over the holidays, it would be incredibly useful to be able to play longer-form videos like Grubbsnax at 1.2-1.4 speed like I might do with a podcast.

Has GB ever looked into whether a playback speed option might be a feature to add to the in-house video player for premium videos? I could see it being useful for anyone like me who wants to consume videos like Grubbsnax, Albummer, or the video Bombcast or VM Dumptruck in a way that is more like how a podcast player (or even Youtube) allows us to. It would be a nice feature for premium videos which often tend to be a bit longer.

I personally find that 1.2 speed or so makes it so the difference in audio is not hugely noticeable, but I actually manage to get through my content backlog.

Just a suggestion!

While I think listening to podcasts at anything but normal speed is a crime against nature I am not quite sure what the situation currently is with regards to engineering and site features. I recently inquired about the green posting bar which is my pet peeve and got no reply about that while in the past you would get the customary "we will look into it" which would typically end up getting unresolved. I thought maybe Red Ventures would provide a larger backend team to help out with the site but, who knows? Paging @rorie are you able to share anything?

I use an extension called Video Speed Controller, it works quite well on videos but does not seem to work on the GB audio player.

This is a big reason why downloading videos has been a nice feature. Back when I couldn’t catch UPF live, I’d watch the archive in VLC, and it’s pretty safe to put at 1.1x or 1.2x speed. It’s a long show, there’s some dead air/rambling, and that speed wouldn’t mess up the talking or game audio too much.

I’ve heard people say they watched an entire multi hour lecture series on YouTube at 1.5x or 2x speed, and that’s truly maniacal.

@bisonhero: that's a great tip, I'll try it when I get into a video backlog pickle

@humanity: I also used to be a normal speed purist but damn if it's almost impossible to keep up with even my small set of podcasts otherwise.

@tontogoldstein: if you click download button then it opens in a new screen. That screen can be speed up. I listen to podcast and youtube on speed up. Im too used to it that normal speed feels too slow. I know, blasphemy but i enjoy it.

I feel you, this is also my sickness, I'm never happier than when there is nothing new to listen to. I'll bet you're a big fan of zero inboxes.

Lemme watch Mario Party Party at half speed.

All that does, is make people who are drunk, start to sound drunk. Entertaining, if you have seven hours to watch a typical Mario Party video.

Yes, please.

Add playback speeds to the GB site-- 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x, and 2x are a godsend

That extension is working perfectly for me for videos, thank you! My backlog of Grubbsnax now seem much more manageable.

FYI the video player is under a centralized team now at RV that has to make it work for a million different sites. I'll see what I can do about adding playback speed as an option but it's not something I can just request and get it done - if the central team feels like it might be too complicated they may not do it. But yeah if you download the videos you can load them up in MPC or something like that and play them at whatever speed you like!
