Grand Theft Auto 3 and Devil May Cry was what made me buy a PS2 while Resident Evil 4 made me buy a Gamecube.
Yes, that's usually one of the main reasons I buy a system. For instance I always get the Nintendo systems because of Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros etc...., I got an Xbox last gen for Halo and several PC ports, got a 360 for Oblivion (later got it for PS3), got my PS3 for Uncharted and Metal Gear (but LBP is amazing too), but there are other aspects to buying a system such as free online, controller preference etc....
shadow complex almost made me buy a xbox. cant remember what game made me buy a ps3 or a ps2 and every console before that i grew up with granted that was only the ps1/psx and if you include commadore 64 amiga 2000 and so on and a sega console i cant remember since i was 4 at the time.
the rest have been pc's
I bought my ps4 for Mgs4 and am soooo happy i did. I play my Xbox more cuz that's where my friends are but my favorite games are on my ps. Valkyria chronicles, yakuza, gow 3, and uncharted....also not to be one sided I love my wii it became the wired Japanese game system I expected from Sony. Also endless ocean is the most relaxing game ever.
Pretty frequently. I bought an Xbox 360 to play Final Fantasy XIII (Xboxs were much cheaper than PS3s back then and I was poor), I bought a Vita to play Persona 4: Golden, a 3DS to play Theatrythm and 999 and one of the reasons for me buying a PS3 was so I could import Persona 4 Arena. The last one didn't work out so well but I had other reasons for wanting a PS3 so it's all good.

I hope PlayStation 4 will make me want to buy it by trying to take gaming to the next level instead of just trying to follow wherever the PC platform is going. It is a gaming system, specifically designed and created for gaming surely it should be able to best or at least rival the PC without turning the "exclusive on PS4" move.
Main reason I bought a PS3 was for Demon's Souls (but also Uncharted 3 and my 5th Xbox had broke.)
I bought an almost 400 dollar graphics card solely for about 15 frames per second in BF3. Obviously it's helped in other games as well, but that was the one and only reason I needed a better graphics card at the time.
It never happened that there was only one game i was interested in on a platform. I can probably concede that had there been nothing other than MGS4 on the PS3 i would probably have eventually bought one for it but even then, it's also a blu-ray player so...
One possible exception could be FFIV for the DS. It's the first Final Fantasy i played way back when on the SNES and also my first JRPG and i never finished it and wanted to remedy this so i went and bought a DS for that game thinking that there were already other games i would be interested in and also some GBA games too. In the end i never bought any other games for the DS other than Chrono Trigger that i already owned on SNES but couldn't play anymore since the SNES was busted.
