I bought the Xbox original for Kotor and I bought a gamecube for RE:4.....then RE:4 was released for everything and i pretty much never used that thing again.
Xbox ended up better with a few obscure games and Halo 1 and 2.

I bought the PS3 primarily for LittleBigPlanet.
But no, if there was nothing else that interested me on that console I would not have gone through with the purchase just for LBP.
Oh yeah, I'm gonna end up getting a Wii U for Bayonetta 2.
SNES - Street Fighter II
Dreamcast - Soul Calibur
Gamecube - Wind Waker
360 - Oblivion
The only reason I buy consoles is to play a particular game. There may be multiple games I'm interested in, but it's always that one that pushes it into the buy column.
Which is why I'm probably not going to get a Xbox or PS4 at launch. Actually a WiiU is more likely due to Wind Waker HD. That really would be a one game console (maybe ever!).
360 for Alan Wake and Splinter Cell Conviction, Forza was nice too. Was disappointed that Alan Wake and Splinter Cell both went to PC....ended up selling my 360 a month ago to a friend for 100 bucks...
Bought a PSP at launch for Gran Turismo Portable.
Yeah, I got fucked on that one.
But I found some worthwhile games to play until it came out, like DJ Max Portable Clazziquai Edition
Also, CFW.
I bought a DS for Phoenix Wright and I've upgraded my PC twice for specific games, once for FF7, back in the day, and later on for... Oblivion? Maybe it was Morrowind. Still, once you have the system, you can't just buy one game. You've got to at least try a couple other things.
Not yet, but I'll probably buy a Wii U for Wonderful 101, love every game from Kamiya and from what I've heard so far it doesn't seem that W101 will change my opinion.
And I got a PS4 booked for the MGS mainly but I hope to god that there will be more good games for that platform...
Edit: come to think of it, I kinda bought the original Xbox for Halo. That game had great timing, nothing really good FPS-wise was happening on the PC at that time if I recall correctly.
I have done that twice before and only regret doing it once. The first was the Original Xbox and that was for Jet Set Radio Future while sadly, I do deserve some humiliation for it, the Wii for Sonic & The Secret Rings... Least with my Xbox purchase I bought Shenmue 2 and Halo along with a few others but the Wii purchase I just kept buying worse and worse games. The Wii is the only console I have not finished a single game. Wait, I've beaten one and it was Toe Jam and Earl 1 for the Virtual console.

Totally agree on SNES and Dreamcast... and then Gamecube for Smash Bros Brawl.
As a kid, I got my aunt to get me the GBC so I could play that new awesome Pokemon thing. Annnnnd, while there are games I'm interested in on the 3DS, the thing that made me say "I'M GETTIN DAT SHIZ" is Pokemon X/Y, and I'd be getting it if it didn't have those other games... Guess some things never change.
Yep. SNES for Super Mario World. Wasn't disappointed. Also helped that it had the best version of Street Fighter 2 at the time too.
I got a GameCube just for RE4, a PS3 just for MGS4, and a 3DS just for the Adventure Time game.
Ended up mostly using the GC for both RE4 and Animal Crossing, and then the 3DS for... well... Animal Crossing.
OLD but... I bought a Super Nintendo, just for Lufia II Rise of the Sinstrals
Then I bought the Limited Edition Modern Warfare Xbox 360, for - well - Call of Duty Modern Warfare, funnily enough I didn't enjoy the game as much as I had the others. But hey, least I had a awesome console.
Very few games come out that I'm desperate to play. But I definitely will buy into a platform (PC/console) for the one or two games that I'm going to spend a lot of time with and want to keep coming back to.
Xbox for Halo 2 (back when that franchise was second to none), Nintendo systems for Mario Kart/WiiSports, PC for TF2/Dota2/Battlefield, etc.
The only console I ran out and bought for a specific game was GameCube for the Resident Evil remake. I was very satisfied with that decision.
In terms of what games I bought with consoles at first:
I got the 360 when Limbo was released, which seems dumb now considering Limbo is out on everything. But I also got Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and Forza Motorsport 3 so it wasn't all a waste.
WiiU has nothing of interest to me, and probably won't. They have to do something radical with a new Zelda title to get me back on board!
