Hi I just bought L.A noire and there is a sale at futureshop here for portals 2 and red dead redemption which I never played before. I though after not getting to shoot ppl that much in L.A noire, I can buy a second game for it. I mean at $30, I might not get a deal like this in a while because it retails at $40. I never played red dead redemption, is there side missions? I don't find westerns appealing, but it's a rockstar game. I'm glad I waited and not buy it at launch because now i'm paying like half the price if I get it. A family member told me to get this game and it's worth it, so maybe I want this game for my library and not rent it. I don't know if I should rent it or not. The sales ends like tommorrow, so I reallly don't have that much time to make a decision. I'm not getting two games, I just bought one yesterday.
About portals 2, it's $30, the cheapest at retail, which the game cost like $50 when it's not on sale. I could get the ps3 version, but I don't feel like even playing it on ps3, or linking my accounts together. I just simply don't care and if I can buy the pc version so I don't have to own the ps3 version, I would. But I know it's a good game, but it's very short. I also don't play multiplayer or co-op very often. I am hesitent on this game. I also don't like valve's console drm, but if I don't make a steam account on the ps3, I can't even play the co-op which forces me to buy the game. If I had a choice, i'll get it on pc. But I worry it will have no value, after I play it, I just won't play it again. I'm just not feeling it right now, I have no motivation to play this game at all.
lastly maybe the better choice is to forget about these two games and save my money and get mortal kombat. I don't know if the game is getting stale for most ppl or not. I like mortal kombat in general, I used to play this in the arcades and stuff so I like the oldschool gameplay. But I don't like paying $69 for a game, or even $65. If I rent it, I know I can't really go online anyways because of some console drm online pass which makes renting it difficult. I am not really into online, can I get away with renting it?
Or should I just rent all of these games and be done with it. Save me some money, or is there anything I will replay at a later time? I might want to play mortal kombat at a later time. Maybe even red dead, but portals, I can't experience the full game with the console drm for co-op. What should I do?
Help me make decision $30 portals 2, red dead or full price MK (I want some value, just bought L.A noire and want a second game)
@Barrock: Not getting any add on content, but tell me more about red dead. How many hours of gameplay can I get out of it? Are the side missions actually good or just throw away missions that are after thoughts? It's 94% on gamerankings which is good, portals is like 95%, but it only has a fraction of the gameplay.I played the game for 211 hours and got 100% completion. I'm not sure if that's taking into account the add on though. I 100%ed that too. Some of the side missions are really good. Others are kind of short. I really enjoyed the hunting and the online can be really damn fun if you get the right people.
I see others voting for portals 2, I am not feeling it right now and have no motivation to play fps puzzle games, even with witty writing and interesting puzzles. I might want something with more action like red dead or mortal kombat to go along with the non action l.a noire. Still portals at $30 is the cheapest I can get this game. I might have to wait another year before it's this cheap again at stores without a sale, but I can wait.
But still, I would like to hear the argument for portals 2.
I'm going to recommend Portal 2, if you buy it on Steam you will also get a giftable copy of Portal and I think if you buy it on PS3 you get a Steam copy of Portal 2. With the PS3 version you could actually join up to play co-op on your lan with a friend, relative, a local kid or passing stranger! It's fun, I've completed both single player and co-op modes and there are new levels on the way with a possible map editor too.
Look if I get it as a store copy, it's going to connect to my steam account anyways. It's not cheap right now on steam, it's $50. If I pay that much, then I can't get mortal kombat lately.
Portal (singular, as in one portal) 2 is the best best. Red Dead is older and likelier to drop in price in the near future than Portal 2 is. Both are fantastic though. Red Dead can easily last you 20-30 hours depending on how many side missions you do (I didn't do many; didn't care for the combat). Portal 2 can give you 15 hours for single player and co-op.
The most gameplay for your money is most likely Red Dead, Maybe MK if you are really into fighting games, Portal 2 is phenominal, but short.
Actually all of those games are must buys for me.. I think I got them all day one, haven't finished MK yet as it frustrates the hell outta me, but I'm loving it still.
I actually started a second play through of RDR last week in anticipation of L.A. Noire, and after not playing since it came out, I forgot how immersive that game is, Rockstar does settings like no one else, except maybe Bethesda for open world immersion..
Anyway dude, you can't go wrong, they are all exceptional games. Although L.A. is not a typical R* game, it still controls like one. so if you think you might burn out on R* games, that is the only reason I can think to maybe not get RDR..
otherwise flip a coin, draw straws, take out a loan and get em all..
The game with the most value will probably be Red Dead. It's a lengthy single player. I bought the PS3 version of Portal 2 so I can get the free PC copy, you just have to link your steam account when signing into PSN in the Portal 2 menu. The game is great but if you're looking for more value, I suggest getting Portal 2 in a future steam sale. MK is MK. Yo, it's a fighting game. I enjoyed it, story mode is cool and the challenges are great. I'm not going to go into multiplayer though because I don't my ass to get kicked and also the netcode is still shit.
3, 000th Post!
I don't find westerns appealing. Then RDR isn't the game for you. It's a pretty hard love letter to the western genre, and is totally enveloped in the fiction and themes of that genre. If you think you can look past that, it has a pretty amazing world, and a nice revenge story. I find the characters absolutely despicable, though, and the ending grated hard.
If you ask me, they're all must-have games, so get them in whatever order you want. Just make sure you get them all eventually.
If you're not a fan of Western's, maybe you should just rent Red Dead and get Portal 2 right now. It took me over six hours to beat Portal 2 honestly, maybe 7 or 8, and I loved every second of it, a fantastic game. Red Dead is also pretty good, if you're looking for a game to last you a while, it definitely would be Red Dead over Portal 2. I'm also not a huge fan of Western's, but Red Dead did the genre good and honestly, you can't go wrong either way, both are great games.
Well even though I am not a fan of westerns, I don't mind it if it has gta style gameplay. The gameplay to me is more important than then setting. I can get use to it, if I get to shoot a ton of ppl and get a ton of value out of the game. It's an open world game and that's what i'm missing from l.a noire. Might make a good complimentary game to it at this price.
Seriously, no one really explained why portals 2 is worth it except that it is. What is it, gladis? with some british robot that pretends to be witty and funny with good puzzles? Might be a good game to play though, but I don't mind just renting it if it weren't for the steam console drm. I also think maybe I can buy it later on steam, i'm not in a hurry. But for $30, it does seem like a great price and maybe for the lack of value, it's worth it at that price. I mean I only have one day to decide since the sale for RDR and portals 2 ends tomorrow.
What about mortal kombat, is there alot of stuff to unlock in the krypt? Will it take more than a few days to unlock everything? That might give it some value. I'm a big mortal kombat fan, so I do like fighting games. I might consider renting it for now and buying it dirt cheap later on. I don't know. It's just a bit too expensive otherwise I would of already bought it at $59.
Portal 2, although fantastic(my own personal game of the year so far), could easliy be a renter. RDR is real landmark game, and well worth it for 30 bucks. MK is pretty damn good in itself, but unless your really into fighting game (and the extended replay they provide) probably a renter also.
Well according to the polls, i'm probally going to get RDR today. It's the best value for the price, i'll try to get the other games later on when it's cheaper again. Might even rent mortal kombat and buy it when it's dirt cheap later on. At least I can say I played it.
I mean if I rent mortal kombat for almost a week, will I still want to play the game again after that? If I do, then maybe I should buy it. I don't know, most of you played it and it seems like a good enough game. I hope there is a lot of stuff to unlock in the krypt.
The only games where I wish I rented were ps3 exclusives, I don't replay those. But these aren't exclusives, rather multiplatform games which I enjoy. I could rent all three of them, but I could buy one of them to play again later on and rent the rest. Or just buy them all cheap at a later price so I can replay all of them. I at least get to keep a game out of this process. I don't know tbh, I tend to buy games rather then rent them. Rental is for games i'm not sure of, or I know I don't want to keep. But I don't mind owning all these games at one point. I just want to get a game during the sale now since today is the last day here and to have a game to compliment L.A noire's lack of gunplay.
Why are you calling it Portals 2? Did the Portal franchise suddenly take the Alien stratagem of sequel naming?
Just bought red dead redemption, thanks everyone for the input and stuff. I'm glad I asked, otherwise I wouldn't really know the value of these games. I probally have enough games to play for these few weeks. I'll try to finish all side missions and stuff.

I'm not a huge fan of westerns either but for some reason I LOVE western themed games and I LOVED Red Dead.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
(I also hope you have a chance to get your hands on Portal 2 in the near future as well)
Mortal Kombat is a lot of fun online, but I would try to get it on sale but thats just me (its 49.99 at amazon right now, sure not great but $10 off is better then nothing).
For Portal 2 and Red Dead I don't own either yet but would like to get them down the road. I beat Portal 1 and thought it was brilliant.
I bet they are overcharging ppl because they want you to buy their kollectors edition or tournment edition instead, not falling for that.
Also I want to write, I still haven't installed red dead yet on my ps3, still playing L.A noire. Trying to finish all the side missions before playing this game.
