It's October which means Halloween, candy, and monsters, and scary games! Tis the season! Do you have any games you have set aside for this month specifically?

I'm going to cram horror/scary games into this month as much as I can. I started SOMA early and will finish it soon. I also started Undertale a bit early and am at the tail end. I saved Costume Quest for this month specifically. Those are my big three, but I'm also trying to snag Amnesia or other horror games as well. Any recommendations for October themed games?

I plan to take another swing at White Day. It's the only horror game I've played (out of many, many others) that I can barely progress in because it stresses me out so badly. Well, that and the difficulty and myriad glitches. But mostly the stress. I refuse to let it defeat me, though.

EDIT: Ooh, I know what I'll play! The DOS Nightmare on Elm Street game! I remember it being surprisingly good, at least compared to the NES game. Plus it's based on Dream Warriors, instead of seeming like an entirely unrelated game with occasional Freddy cameos *stares pointedly at Rare*.

Everyone should check out Stasis now that it's released. So far I've been really impressed.

I always set aside horror games for October. That said, I already survived PT, and I'm working on Resident Evil (the new remaster). After that is Silent Hill 2 and Fatal Frame 2 if time permits. This year though, I've actually been streaming it. It doesn't help that I'm a total chicken though.

I can't say specficly set aside horror games for October but it does set the mood to play a few throughout the month. Conveniently Corpse Party: Blood Drive is coming out soon so I'll be playing that. At one point I was playing all of the Alone in the dark games but I left off with the third one. Maybe I'll pick it back up and finish it.

I played SOMA in late September and that game is a lock for my personal GOTY list, had a fantastic experience with the game. I just started Until Dawn and I also will play RE Revelations 2, Stasis, White Night and Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water this month.

I got about halfway through Alien: Isolation last year so if I have the time I might go back and beat that game as well, but I may play a "throwback" horror game instead like Echo Night or Siren. Or I could do another Eternal Darkness play through, that is always a great option. I'll see what happens after I get through the 2015 selections.

Until Dawn is a great october game. I have finished most of the big horror games this year, almost done with Soma, or halloween themed games like Costume Quest 2, which was a little dissapointing to be honest, so I think Zombi for PS4 is going to be my scary halloween game this year.

Oh yeah I have completely forgotten about White Night. I might have to check that out.

For Scary Pre-vember, I'll probably give Neverending Nightmares and maybe Yume Nikki a shot.

@deathfury: Stasis is pretty enjoyable, even if it is occasionally pretty janky. Certainly not for everyone though - there are some really disturbing things going on in that game.

Costume Quest. It's so adorably amazing...sequel's pretty great too, but a tad harder to get into.

Until Dawn really nails the whole "slasher" feel, though. As someone who played through it with an S.O. co-pilot, I really can't recommend it enough if you're looking to not stress too much gameplay-wise.

SOMA is a fantastic game that everyone should play, even if they're not there for the horror part.

I always seem to play the original costume quest at some point. Found a strange looking game for the ps2 the other day at Cex, a rather infamous chain secondhand store in the UK. 'Castleween' it's called, seemed suitably odd and only cost £1.50.

I'll probably test out my random steam pickings I got a few weeks ago. Stasis, Claire, and Layers of Fear. I never got around to Alien Isolation so might play that some. Also System Shock 1 came out on GOG recently and having never played it I might give it a shot.

@arkkazeal: Oh shit, I forgot I bought System Shock from Gog as soon as they released it...I should definitely play it >_> I've just been preoccupied with a bunch of other games.

I downloaded PT when I heard it was going to be pulled but still haven't played it. Definitely want to play that and probably Until Dawn as well.

I bought Silent Hill 3 but still haven't played it. Guess I could pick that, if I end up playing something horror-ish...if that fails, though, and I still feel like playing something horror-like, Dead Space 2's going to be an easy pick.

This basically has become a yearly ritual

Dude, holy shit, that's made by I-mockery. That's such a HUGE nostalgia trip for me, god damn! I wonder if their website is still up.

As for horror games, my recommendations are:

  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent
  • Soma
  • Alien: Isolation
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Until Dawn
  • Outlast

Never heard of Stasis, so I'll check it out.

P.T. should be your #1 priority if you haven't played it yet (and have access to it). Next would be Outlast. Personally I think I'm going to play through Amnesia: a Machine for Pigs.

I just played through Layers of Fear. Does some pretty neat things. Seems heavily influenced by PT though.... kind of rips off some of its scare techniques a bit much tbh. But it was one of the better recent "horror" games I've played and its really pretty. Only downside is its Early Access and you go through a door to see a message: "Thanks for playing, we are adding more later" or something like that in a pretty random spot.

Seems more PT than Allison Road does tbh yet Allison Road seems to be getting more attention for that.

@hypnotoadbrwowrowrow: Like, really disturbing. There's a lot of very messed up things in that game. Definitely check it out though if you're interested in more or less a Dead Space adventure game...

I just watched the trailer for this and you are not kidding about being heavily influenced by PT. The ghost at the end of the hallway twitches in the same way as Lisa from PT. I mean, if its good though, it's good.

My suggestions for anyone looking to get spooked:

  • White Day: A Labyrinth Named School (Basically proto-amnesia, really cool if you look past some technical hiccups)
  • Ib (Awesome paint gallery setting, good characters)
  • F.E.A.R. (Not super scary, but still a lot of fun as an action game and the story's well presented)

I'm probably gonna play through White Day again this month since I love that game. I'm also considering picking up SOMA, but I'm not sure whether or not it'll be my thing.

Admittedly, horror games aren't usually my thing, but I can think of a few that might be worth a shot:

  • White Night - This is at the top of my suggestions for personal reasons. I really dug the concept but never made it very far. Think I was still in a "Battlefield 4 finally works so I'm going to only play that!" phase. Shame.
  • Dead Space 2 - I know, the first game has a better atmosphere to some, but the sequel really nailed it for me, like when You return to the Ishimura. Holy. Crap.
  • Until Dawn - I don't really consider it a horror game, especially as it veers hard off the rails at about the halfway point, but it sets a good mood to goof around in. Invite friends over to make the choices if you can get everyone together: It's a blast to see their reactions.
  • Darkwood - The wiki needs hardcore editing on it (which I do myself actually...), but Darkwood is one of the few games that genuinely stresses me the Hell out. It might not be a looker, being top down and all, but it creates a sense of dread I don't often feel in games. Every step, every creak as you explore a forgotten house. It just creates an oppressive feeling all around. A heads up though if any of you manage to get it: The controls aren't very good. No, I'm not going to use a Resident Evil style "It adds to the tension!" defense here: It just doesn't control well, full stop.

Think that's all I've got. Hope you check out a few, if you haven't already. There are some good suggestions in this thread!

Also does the same don't look behind you or she will get you thing. Except they do it multiple times so it's not quite as effective. And when she grabs you she all up in your face pretty much identically to PT.

It still has some clever things besides this though. Mostly environmental stuff.

I was playing Silent Hill 2 and Grabbed by the Ghoulies (on Rare Replay) today while munching pumpkin pie. Never actually got through SH2 in the past, but man is it good. I also really want to get through REmake and possibly Resident Evil 2. I also was already playing Dead Rising 3 and Soul Reaver and those are pretty Halloween-y.

So this will be the third year in a row that I've planned on playing a bunch of horror games in October, but in the past I didn't spend as much time playing games as I would have liked. I beat Neverending Nightmares today though(was pretty disappointed in it but I didn't check out the alternate endings)! My backlog of games in general is massive, including horror games, here's some I plan on getting to this month that I've never played through before: Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Dead Space, Lone Survivor(kind of surprised nobody mentioned this one), Red Dead Undead Nightmare, & Silent Hill Shattered Memories. Others I want to get to if I have time are: Condemned 2: Bloodshot, Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil 4, & ZombiU.

Edit: Also I just found out that the new Fatal Frame game coming out for Wii U on October 22nd is download only in NA, not physical disc? At least we get it, but kind of a bummer.

I just have to second Amnesia: a Machine for Pigs. I've played through that game 3 times and it's my horror gaming comfort food. Fun, low challenge, and spooky atmosphere are my jam.

Well there is a Halloween sale on PSN so I just bought the following for PS4:

  • Bloodborne (Not a horror game but it was on sale anyways and I haven't played it. But it also has a pretty dark and gothic look so I can see why it's part of the Halloween sale.)
  • The Evil Within
  • Zombi

I guess I'm all set for the rest of October and most of November on the gaming front.

I just finished getting the platinum in Until Dawn (GOTY!), and, being a pretty big werewolf fan, I've moved on to The Order 1886. I don't think it's going to scratch the horror itch I was hoping for.
