How do you feel about the term "Gamer" ?
Remember, we're a young medium. We're only now beginning to enter the second generation, of kids whose parents more likely played games. At that time in film, it was still considered a silly pastime, not a legitimate (and then dominant) dramatic art form. You can't change how people feel, only how you react.
The idea that we shouldn't have 'labels' whatsoever goes against all human nature to understand things by observing similarities and differences. To someone unfamiliar with gamer culture, yes they probably don't understand there's a difference between the boom headshot teabagging kids and the grouchy old grognards and the casual Ville player and a responsible adult who likes Prince of Persia. But to someone unfamiliar with Scandanavian languages, Finnish and Norweigian are just Swedish.
I've never heard anyone actually say gamer out loud to me. I usually hear that word when someone is trying to get me to buy something.
I personally love being known as a gamer most of the time. Their are times when being a gamer is a terrible thing though. mostly this is at younger relatives birthdays and Christmas.
Gamer is fine. It's short and self-explanatory. A person that plays video games as a hobby. That's all it means, so I don't get any of the vitriol toward it.
