I usually grab an interesting name from whatever book I'm currently reading. If I can't think of anything, Bruce is always a good substitute.

@calmgamer: Those food names are adorable.

@mariachimacabre: Woo hoo another Brian Jacques fan! And yeah, they were pretty violent for kids books. I'm not one for violence but it did add to the fuzzy animal action!

For general RPGs i just make up names.

But for the Persona series I've decided to name them after Star Wars actors with Hara at the end. Don't ask why.

Persona 3 had Mark Hara.

Persona 4 had Alec Hara.

Persona 5 will be Peter Hara.

When playing a female character in any given RPG I tend to name her after my girlfriend.

Otherwise, I'll scan my DVD collection until I fall upon something great like Pootie Tang.

How do you guys decide on a name for your characters?

I make mostly female characters, but I really tend to base the names on fitting teh character. If I have a young inexperienced, happy character it might be Brittney, Gwen, or Penny; if I have a have tough 30-ish warrior it might be Cordylia, Lilith, or Gwynllian. Probably some weird sexism on my part thinking of making young women inexperienced in my mind....but, oh well, at least I can admit my fault.

I like to give all girl characters slutty names like Chesty Leroux or Amee DuTrampe. Guy characters I try for something comical.

If the character is male, I usually use my own name, with the exception of Bioware titles for some reason where the naming is kind of arbitrary (The Warden's name was Ragnar, Shepard's first name was Las). If the character's female, I usually end up with a name that includes at least two "A"s (Arial, Lareal, Ava, etc.) for no apparent conscious reason.

If it's a character I create, then she'll almost always be a really tall African girl like my sister in law, who is fucking fascinating. So I'll pick a name like Njeri or Oyeyemi. Because those are really the only African names I know. Otherwise, default. Link will always be Link. Except when it's really funny.

I either give the main character my own name, such as in the Zelda games, or a name that begins with the same letter. Other times I ask for suggestions from friends or I look through a baby name book.

Male: Jon*****man. Replace ***** with a trait. For example, my Diablo 3 Crusader is named JonShieldman because Crusaders have big shield.

Female: MileyCyrus.

I really don't want to give RPG characters a name and really appreciate it if the games provide a default choice. It also makes discussion about the game a lot easier.

I usually use default names if they are very creative or they fit well with the setting like Cloud, Ramza, and Squall. I used my name for Mass Effect. My username was originally what I used for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic as a custom name combined from randomly generated ones from it. In other situations, I will use my real name or username.
