How much does the average developer working on a The Witcher 3 or Red Dead 2 know about the game's story during development?

A programmer could work on any number of systems within Red Dead without knowing much more than character names and basic relationships if that. It seems like a lot of the developers could get off with a surface level understanding of how it all fit together and just focus on their own particular vertical slice.

For Witcher 3, probably more than you might think. I seem to recall from a NoClip episode that a lot of the process for the side content was like "if a writer has a good idea for a side-quest, go grab a programmer and try to build it. If a programmer's got a cool gameplay idea, go grab a writer and try to build a story around it."
