It's 2023, and you've been sworn in as gaming person president. Your word is law. How will you fix all the issues of today's media consumption world?

Wow, It's my first time seeing and coming across such a broad and thoughtful question. 😅

A president that's a gamer? Where can I find one? (I'm joking of course)

Establish a large publically funded developer union and establish a regulatory system for MTX. The only thing that needs to happen to "fix" gaming is for it to stop being the modern gold rush. Gaming was fine 25-30 years ago when it was still a niche industry and not driven by profitability. While this wouldn't necessarily solve everything, the only actual solution would be for videogames to become outdated, like radio or magazines. But that comes with another host of problems and only pushes the problem to another industry.

But then again, I come from a "socialist" scandinavian country, so ofc my solution is to not allow rampant capitalism.

Yeah, that's the serious answer. Set hours, if crunch is needed, offer overtime and pay them for it.

Regulate microtransactions like it was gambling.

Heavy fines for any "There are no games coming out lol!" comments.

Jail time if it's doubled up with a comment about how impractical it is to cover all the indie game releases.

I feel these changes would be harsh but fair.

  1. Unionize the devs and workers.
  2. Halt the market consolidation of 3rd party developers and publishers.
  3. Break up the global tech giants / oligarchs, e.g. Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.
  4. Get gambling and gambling mechanics appropriately labelled as gambling under the law (subject to oversight, regulation, and taxation).
  5. Remove Gambling / Gambling mechanics from products and entertainment aimed at children and at-risk addicts.
  6. Send Kotick (and all the other abusers and enablers in video games) to a 3rd world prison / shithole, where they'll rot for the rest of their miserable lives; seize and donate all their personal assets to charities.
  7. Abolish / outlaw Crypto, Crypto Mining, and NFTs.
  8. Automatic jail time for Tech Bros., executives, and companies who blindly hype "the blockchain."
  9. Abolish / outlaw the scalping and profiteering of consumer electronics, e.g. graphics cards, video game consoles, etc.
  10. Force Respawn to make Titanfall 3 with the OG devs from Titanfall 2: I need more BT and Cooper in my life.

Sadly, the gaming industry is like the war on drugs. It seems too big to fail at this point, like the issue we are seeing with Kotick and how he is pretty much getting off smelling like roses. And despite knowing this, when Diablo 4 comes out and Overwatch 2 comes out, I will be playing both of them. Sorry, it is what it is.

@topcyclist: Entertainment is often recession proof or at the very least far more resilient and we saw through lock down video game sales and spending went through the roof. Given how segmented the industry is now a crash effecting everyone is next to impossible.

Anything could fail but the folks buying Nintendo content are completly different to those that buying into PS/Xbox and each of the three are stronger/weaker across very different territories, and that's not counting PC, mobile, subscription services like mmo's or F2P stuff. A single crash wouldn't stop gaming it would need to multiple and at the same time which has never happened.

COD is absolutely not making less money Modern Warfare 2019 had the best first year sales of any COD title ever and Warzone just prints money it makes $5m daily.

I agree, but we've seen failures, and people give their money to companies, there not forced to for the most part. Many companies that were big failed, I think the take that were too big to fail is corporate speak and mostly to lull people into believing things cant change, eat what we give you. Several studios have admitted their one or two game releases that don't do gangbusters from failure. Not a great example but DOA6 seems to make the company money...will DOA7 succeed...Or say if Ubisoft has more mess ups will they keep succeeding, yes but say tomb raider remember how that was considered a failure...ok wait i remember that was overzealous suits in the company thinking tomb raider at the time would be as successful as a new franchise with a way more appealing generic yet fun dude who quips and i lost my reply you win XD.

TLDR: I get ya, I think in all seriousness anything can fail is realistic but i get why you mean no they wont. I do think slopes happen and gaming needs to innovate like vr or something cause just better graphics no longer impress people.

* Ban loot boxes

* Better regulation on developer wage/salary structures and working hours

* Steam refund style policy for all games and platforms

* Get more diversity/interests at the big game journalist sites and cut-down on the insularity and hivemind mentalities

@big_denim: I wouldn't ban lootboxes but I'd not charge for them. Or, if someone does pay for them, drastically reduce the odds for paying customers.

Refunds for digital goods needs to become an industry standard, though. As does gifting or at least some way to trade digital goods between users. One day I'm going to die. I'd like my stuff to go to someone.

My first act as world leader will be to make sure you have the biggest lawn to yell from.
