I want to use my xbox controller for my PC games...
If it's a wired controller, you can just plug it into one of your USB ports and it'll instantly work.
If it's a wireless one, you need to buy one of those wireless receivers.
Be advised, some games detect wired and wireless controllers as entirely different devices and assign them different button layouts. For example, there were issues with the recent PC release of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath where a wireless controller would not work properly, but a wired one would (later patched by the devs).
This hasn't happened a lot, but I just wanted to point it out.
The official one is called a "crossfire" but I am not sure they make it anymore - it is discontinued over here (UK).
Chinese knockoff seem to get good reviews - something like this http://cgi.ebay.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Controller-Gaming-Receiver-PC-Black-/140528150327?pt=Video_Games_Accessories&hash=item20b8216737 or http://www.dealextreme.com/p/designer-s-xbox-360-2-4ghz-wireless-controller-gaming-receiver-for-pc-black-56546
I thought OP was talking about the xbox 1 because there's a special breakaway dongle that converts S/Duke to USB.
yeah, that first xbox was thrown together from off-the-shelf parts (and still better built than the 360). Those were just USB ports with proprietary pugs on them.I thought OP was talking about the xbox 1 because there's a special breakaway dongle that converts S/Duke to USB.
You are a bad person. KBM4LIFE!not if life includes Super Meat Boy, Bit Trip Runner, Limbo, Prototype or (to some people) Assassin's Creed

This, Super Meat Boy is hands down five times better with a gamepad. They even state so in the loading screen. Racing games are often way better with a gamepad aswell. Still haven't gotten DiRT 3 :(
I use my wired 360 controller for a ton of games on my PC.
@Ahmad_Metallic: @Sjupp: The two of you are bad people too. You are both now on my bad people list. You have been warned....Have you played SMB my man?
also, i have nothing to be ashamed of!!!! Holding that controller close to your dick as you sit back in your chair is relaxing
I am also one of those people who much prefers controllers to a keyboard and mouse. (Except for RTS' of course) Also I have my pc hooked up to my TV so playing games on the couch with a mouse and keyboard isn't that good. I use Pinnacle Game Profiler as it can do a lot of stuff and I find it easier to use then xpadder. Only downfall is it costs 20 bucks, but the first 30 days are free so you can see how you like it. Also the website has a large database of people who have made profiles for games that you can change to your own liking if you don't want to start one from scratch.

Virtually every game is better on a pad, bar FPS.
Even then, there are those who'd argue that a pad does the job just as well.
Wireless reciever. It's pretty darn cheap.Where can you buy them? I got a wireless controller that came with my 360 and for the life of me I can't find one of those dam dongles anywhere to connect it to my pc and I refuse to pay for a new wired one just to play one or two games a year. I have gone to several websites and they never have them in stock, and every store I go to all the employees had no dam idea what the hell I was talking about.
The super meat boy argument is just what people are used to. None of them are "better" but most people seem to prefer pad.@Ahmad_Metallic said:

I'm way better at sidescrollers with a keyboard than a pad "I have tried both", and think it feels better particualarily for meatboy. Though I did change the keys, Shift and space is a retarded platformer setup.
You're better off buying a PS3 controller if your compooter has Bluetooth because you can connect it through that and hey you have a PS3 controller which is way better than having a stupid dongle. The only reason I have that dongle is because it was free packed in with the wireless 360 controller "for PC" lol.
Well dang, now that I've searched for them, they're either not in stock or are pretty expensive. I got one for 15 bucks, two, maybe three years ago.@TwoLines said:

Weird.

To some people? o.o Of all of those, ONLY AC 'requires' or is even really better on a gamepad...
But it is awful with KB and Mouse. Your point is valid, just a bad list of games to make the point, imo.

1. I've beaten all 3 AC games on M+KB, AC1 and AC2 twice each. Gamepad is terrible with that series@Ahmad_Metallic said:

2. got a better list? ^^

@MordeaniisChaos: I never understood why people said that. I played AC on my ps3 and the PC and the default KBM controls make that game so much better then trying to fumble around with a controller. As far as I'm concerned, if you want to play AC the best way it's with a KBM. I was doing things with it that I couldn't even attempt on a controller.
OP asked a simple question looking for help and before you know it, the thread gets infested with trolls and platform fanboys.
Fuck you all.
@crusader8463: I edited out my crappy dongle suggestion. People are better off adding $20 and just getting the controller + dongle combo:
@Ahmad_Metallic: @crusader8463: Unless there is some weird stuff you need to setup to improve the PC controls, I hate any game that requires fine directional control, like the combat does in the AC series, with a mouse and keyboard. Your either using the mouse to move towards guys, which is always terrible, or you are using four keys, which is better, but still not great. I also had a massive issue with the camera in that series with a mouse. It wasn't really great on either option but felt more geared towards a stick. Plus, the combat key bindings got a bit weird, considering the way they were originally intended to be used. I also had some pretty severe input lag without the the pad, for some reason, so that might have been the issue, but I did manage to get some time without the lag, and it didn't feel all that much better.
Just some random tips when it comes to Xbox360 controller:
Xpadder (version 5.2 is freeware, later ones cost $10) is extremely useful, even with older games that do support joysticks one might want to use it, as the Xbox360 trigger buttons often can't be mapped in-game, but Xpadder can handle mapping them to mouse buttons or keyboard to serve the same purpose. There are also custom drivers for the Xbox360 controller, but Xpadder is easier to use in most cases.
If somebody has a Wireless receiver that doesn't work, there are probably ways to fix it. The Wireless gaming receiver seems to have a fuse that easily breaks:

If somebody has a Chatpad, that's not supported by Microsoft and won't work in Windows, there however does exists an unofficial driver (wired gamepad only, no wireless support):
