I'm stunned. Aparently, while I was sleeping, the universe answered all of my prayers. Well, not all of them, but one...

As I've often mentioned here when we have discussions about it, there are two titles that I always say I'd be willing to kickstart. An (Eric Chahi created) Out of This World sequel, or a proper RPG return to Shadowrun (SNES). Well, it looks like the latter may actually be coming true.

Original series creator, Jordan Weisman has come out with a kickstart project, to return ShadowRun to it's SNES/PC roots with a new turn-based RPG in the universe.

This is the greatest news in the history of the world.

Jordan has some awesome shit to say, and the clip of them pelting the FPS devs for what they've done to the franchise is worth the price of admission.

I thought this was a thread about Super Mario RPG. I guess Shadowrun is cool though.

Sounds good as I always thought the Shadowrun universe was interesting with the limited time spent with the tabletop RPG, shame the last game that came out was just an multiplayer game. If it was a single player thing similar to Bioshock or Deus Ex it might have been good so hopefully this will fill that role.

Normally, Id agree with you, but this isn't everybody or their grandma, this is Jordan Weisman... I mean, outside of creating these games and universes, he also revolutionized tabletop gaming. The dude knows his RPGs.

I'm sure there is some level of rose-colored glasses going on here, as I haven't seen or played the game (SNES) in decades, but at the time man... it rocked me. More then even FF7 did.

I need to go pledge my first-born child to the cause... just gotta get the wife on board.

Nice, glad you posted that, I meant to. Couldn't agree more either man, this dude is an RPG god, and if there was ever anyone to get behind in a kickstart, it's him. I only wish I had more money to pledge; this needs to happen.

You should edit the link into your original post! Yeah, I've never given to a kickstarter fund but I just instantly laid down $100 for this. In the last 20 minutes it's just gone up by $10, 000 so that's pretty cool!

Didn't miss it, just don't think it's the death-knell for the game. It's not like he wants to make it into a Facebook app...

The initial platforms it releases on are irrelvant to me. I won't play it on a tablet, but I'd be happy to play it on PC with a mouse. The original SNES game was not beholdant to a gamepad... it would have worked just as well on PC imho, and since he clearly wants to take us back to that game's play-style, I don't see how that is any kind of nail in it.

Besides, who'se to say it won't fully support gamepads on PC and use a virtual pad on Tablet... Again, I'm not going to play it on a tablet, so I really don't care, but it's not Street Fighter, it's a turn-based RPG. No reason you can't do that on a tab.

I hated the FPS myself, but that was probably based more on my wanting the franchise to stay as an RPG then the actual quality of the game. I've read a lot of support for that game, even on the Kotaku comments for this story. Apparently there is a segment of gamers who really love that game and swear it's underrated. I don't see it that way, but I'm not a big fan of MP shooters in the first place...

Why? They're making it for PC and tablets. Your finger is a mouse, that's where it. Why does that affect the quality of the game? All you need is slightly bigger buttons to "click" on.

Ya i know thats why i gave him some money but seriously some people are thinking of kickstarter like its a publisher. A publisher run by the internet.

SNES version? No thank you, sorry but the Genesis version was far far superior. You want to go that route I am in, but I am not down for remaking a sub par version. Also, not the greatest RPG, pretty cool on Genesis but not the greatest.

Didn´t Weisman found Smith and Tinker just a a ´short´ time ago? I'm not knocking this, i'd like to play a Shadowrun RPG, but the guy seems kinda all over the place.

I don't have a huge amount of reverence for the original, but the universe of Shadowrun is fantastic and that's good enough for me.

I liked parts of old SNES Shadowrun game. Also, I played the pen and paper game with my friends hundreds of times; we really like Shadowrun back in the day.

The return then is a great surprise. I even think that it being 2D may help the RPG aspects of it.

Hope it turns out well - I'm going to have to sign up for Kickstarter now.

This is one of my favorite games of all time and easily the best console rpg I ever played. It's the one game that really got the idea of being an rpg instead of an interactive storybook or dungeon crawler. Plus the plot line of waking up and having no idea who you are and why people are after you never gets old to me. I think it's would be a great platform for this game. Ita not like the snes controller was any good for it...

It was actually one of the deepest and most skillful console FPS games ever made, despite being a poor use of the Shadowrun brand. Hugely underrated game that would have benefited greatly from being an original IP.

This is not Planescape: Torment...

I can't wait for another new tactical RPG. I love Kickstarter. I just hope it's not some kind of bubble.

I always thought that SNES game was aesthetically really cool...but I never did figure out how to play it.

@Noct: I actually really enjoyed that game. It wasn't fantastically crafted (for example, the bots were about as stupid as they get) but the multiplayer was genuinely enjoyable and the gameplay did a surprisingly good job straddling the line between the game's roots and interesting multiplayer shooter design. I can see why some didn't like it but I thought it was unique and played well and had a good time in it. Any MP shooter that I can enjoy using nothing but a pistol is fine by me.

I'm excited for this, and it should be cool to see what comes of it!

Considering it sounds like the sort of game that typically plays with almost nothing but the mouse, I'd say a Tablet will be fine. Tablets are fine for controlling Neverwinter Nights esque games, because you can just click on the game to move and click on the spellbar to use abilities. Much less input difference than say, consoles. And even then, DA:O was awesome even with console controls.

Sorry to be a killjoy, but the SNES Shadowrun was made in Melbourne, Australia. I might be wrong but I don't think anyone in this Kickstarter has anything to do with that game. (Edit: Of course, I'm not talking about the franchise creators.) In fact, some may have been involved in the Genesis/Mega Drive Shadowrun. But I haven't double checked that.

Huh, I never experienced this game, I don't think I've ever seen it either, which is weird because there was a time in the late 90s to early 00s where I was REALLY into SNES RPGs, and I made an effort to at least try all of them. I'm not invested enough to throw down money, but good luck to this project, and I'll be interested to see how it turns out.

I donated. Never really got around to playing the SNES game, but I have a number of friends who claim it's amazing. Plus, I always thought the Shadowrun universe was kind of cool. Why not?
