I've been out of the loop - Why did Giant Bomb move studios?

Okay, pretty late with this one, I know.

I'm really confused about this change. The new studio looks worse than the old one, and, from what I've gathered, their new offices are in an open space with a bunch of salespeople? That seems worse for mailbags, and other spontaneous videos & livestreams, etc. Am I making this up?

Are there any upsides to this, or was it a shitty situation where they had to adhere to some logistics overhaul dictated by the Powers That Be?

P.S.: Honestly not sure what the right forums would be for this one. I would have posted to Bomb Squad, but that seems come up in the drop-down.

CBS made them (and Gamespot) move to a different floor. The new studio is not complete yet. No idea yet if this will change mailbags.

@snail: Everyone on that floor (including GB and Gamespot) moved down to the first floor. As a result, they got brand new studios for podcasting and livestreaming, and yes, they are in a more open space at their desks.

Personally, I think the new studio is great, especially how it's contained and closed off so they don't have to worry about idiots coming by and hanging out or making noise while they're doing something. Podcasts have sounded nice and crisp lately too.

The floor they were on is being sublet to Apple. That is why they had to move floors. And the studio isn't finished yet. They're waiting for all the baffling they need before they can finish everything. It's an enclosed room, which has the benefit that random people can't wander onto the set randomly.

Giant Bomb is a small part of a much larger company; reordering of office space happens quite often. Giant Bomb is not immune to such moves.

OK, good to know the studio is not finished yet. Shame about the change. I didn't really mind people wandering in to the live set (like Danny from Gamespot), but valued the more enclosed nature of their office spaces.

We'll see how this goes. Thanks everyone for the replies!

@snail: People like Danny still know they can just open the door and walk in if it's something like UPF. What it stops is things like random people in the office sticking their head in front of the camera during the Rock Band 4 Quick Look. Or was that the Guitar Hero Live QL? I dunno. It was one of the recent music game QL's.

Old Dan stank up the old office with his wrestling, so they had to move into a new one for New Dan and his Amibos.

@mattyftm: There were rubberneckers in the Rock Band 4 QL.

There was an instance of a group of people being toured around the office right past the set during a show.

Bring back the cardboard boxes and Quick Look Foam Fort.

  • Giant Bomb and GameSpot moved to the first floor. The move for both sites is seen as a way to improve the site's offices and studio production work. Even if this is more of a logistical driven decision, most people seem alright with it.
  • The old studio was supposedly in a place where cubicles were. In other words, it was an office space, not a "studio". Apparently people would walk by, not knowing who they were or what they were doing, and look at them and do other distracting things while a stream was going on.
  • I think I heard the new studio is bigger than the old studio. Or it is at least more accommodating to their needs. It is still not 100% though. They are still messing with lights and sound stuff at the moment, and may do something like cut out a mirror or have a monitor of what's going on in the control room, so people on the couch can see Drew and/or Jason.
  • Same with the podcast studio. There should be less issues with sharing the studio with larger groups of people, and I believe some of the equipment is new/newer than what was in there.

There's some growing pains, but most of those issues should get ironed out.

The "old studio" wasn't really a studio, it was just a cubicle office with all the cubicles or desks removed. Old GameSpot office space, if I remember. It was never meant to serve as a studio for video content.
