I feel like watching some films that are not made in Hollywood. And are in a different language than English preferably. You guys know any good ones?
Here is probably my favorite non-Hollywood film of all time. Lagaan. It may be just because I'm Indian but this is really a film that can only be described in one word, epic. It was also nominated for an Oscar. Check it out!
Know any good non-Hollywood films?
I've never seen it, but I do recall seeing a poster a long while back. It looks like it's in the mould of classic Merchant Ivory films, only far better produced. I've seen a lot of films based on the British Raj, if it's not fresh, I don't think it could hold my attention.
Korean cinema rivals the best in Hollywood, I suggest you check out these:
- Taekukgi: The Brotherhood of War
- Oldboy
- Lady Vengence
- Sympathy for Mr Vengence
Oh yes go check out Korean film. There is a lot of great stuff, especially Oldboy which is widely known in America.

As for more known-Hollywood films, there's a French film called Il y a longtemps que je t'aime (I've Loved You So Long) that has great acting and a compelling story. I suggest you to check that out too.
On top of that, there are always piles of Chinese martial arts films that are a lot of fun. Go check out some of those as well.
- Tampopo
- Eat Drink Man Woman
- 2046
- Gomorrah
- Europa Europa
- Amélie
- La Dolce Vita
- Let the Right One In
- The Red Balloon
- House of the Flying Daggers
- Anything from director Akira Kurosawa.
There are some great German movies about.
Try 'Downfall' or 'The Lives of Others' if you want to get your history on.

A Bittersweet Life is my favourite movie (well, it's tied with Casino Royale), and it's non-Hollywood. It's a fucking amazing Korean gangster movie. I highly recommend it to everyone.
Yes, I agree with many of the above (especially the Vengeance Trilogy and Let the Right One In) and would like to add C'est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog), Battle Royale, and Haute Tension (High Tension).
I recently watched a Spanish movie ( I hate Spanish movies even though they are from my country), but this one impressed me, it was actually pretty good. It's called ''Celda 211'', it goes about a riot in a jail. The story is one of the most complex I've seen in Spanish filming. I'ts in Spanish, I don't know how you would manage to understand it or find it, but its great.
" @GunnBjorn said:I should really see that movie" Pan's Labyrint is great as well, a movie from Spanish resorts. "definitely, that was the first movie that popped into my head as well. One of the best films I've ever seen.

Amelie, All about lily chou chou, Hard boiled, oldboy/lady vengeance (I dont know why people like mr vengeance), seven samurai
- Shiki-Jitsu (Japan)
- Life is beautiful (Italy)
- Elipsis (Venezuela)
- City of God (Brazil)
- Audition (Japan)
- Anything by Akira Kurosawa (Japan)
- All About Llily Chou-Chou (Japan)
- Amores Perros (Mexico)
- Triumph of the Will (Germany)
- The End of Evangelion (Japan)
- Battle Royale (Japan)
Those are just a few, there are many other great movies outside of the big Hollywood/British productions that should definitely be watched.
Man I'm glad I dont live in a area like that.
"Persepolis" is pretty decent. It has a lot of hollywood actors but "Paris je t'aime" is good. Jeux d'enfants is really good, I think it's called "love me if you dare" in english. If you want some older stuff then you can look up movies by Fritz lang, he's a well renown German director, late 1930s I believe, only saw the end of M but it seemed quite good. Everyone is raving about "let the right one in" a swedish film I believe. It was pretty decent. If you don't mind some anime then Ghost in the shell: innocence is a FANTASTIC movie, I actually did a paper on it and have seen it about 7 times now. The original solaris is long but if you pay attention, it can be quite beautiful, I'm a sucker for romantic movies.
Some you might have missed but are still a little hollywood:
Fierce people
Igby goes down
Rounders
Poolhall junkies
Revolver
Lucky number sleven
" @GunnBjorn said:I'd warn you to be careful with Pan's Labyrinth. The advertising for the movie was pretty deceiving in some respects, though it's still an excellent movie." Pan's Labyrint is great as well, a movie from Spanish resorts. "I saw the trailer for that movie and it looks like a beautiful and interesting movie. I'm gonna have to check that one out! Thanks! "
But I'll echo the sentiments regarding Korean films like Oldboy and anything directed by Akira Kurosawa. I'd especially recommend Kurosawa's Ran, as that hasn't been singled out yet.

Correct.
@Twilight,
Despite it's fairy-tale like look, the movie has a grim and dark tone to it.
There are some gruesome scenes that are most certainly not suitable for children to watch!
I don't know your age, but - as Hailinel stated before - be warned.
Yeah it should off-topic.

'The Lives of Others' is one of the best films in the world as far as I'm concerned." There are some great German movies about. Try 'Downfall' or 'The Lives of Others' if you want to get your history on. "
If you've got the stomach, '4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days' is an emotional gut punch too.
