Light or Dark Theme?

@undefined: I use dark since it was what Gamespot and old Giant Bomb defaulted to in the past. Whenever it switches to white something feels off.

Dark. Even putting aside its being the 'classic' theme, I'll always go for darker themes on websites, apps, ereaders and so on. Dunno if I'm just imagining it, but it seems to help with eye strain.

Only exception's when I'm reading something outside in bright-ish sunlight.

Dark all the way. Dark actually USED to be the default, years ago, but then someone made the awful mistake of making the objectively worse light theme the default.

Dark. Because I'm not a monster.

And also because it's easier on the eyes.

Dark Theme is the only Theme.

I've come around on the white theme. I think they are both valid and the option to choose should remain.

I would add an option to change what your default is.

Dark - it's easier on the eyes, it uses less energy, and I think it looks a little nicer too!

Huh, didn't know dark was the older default. I've been using the site since around 2010 but only as a premium member since like 2013. Any idea when the switch happened?

Light. I have adequate lighting around me, not neolithic fires.

@superdomino: I'm pretty sure it was after they moved back to CBSI, and had to rebuild the whole site. So, 2012 or 2013, I think.

I'm legitimately shocked at all the Light theme using monsters hiding amongst us.

Dark theme is the only choice. If I never have to stare a blindingly white web page again, it will be too soon. To that end, I even have a sweet chrome extension that adds a dark theme for youtube.

Dark theme is the right theme.

GiantBomb used to be dark theme only so anything else would feel wrong.

In fact, I have installed multiple extensions to add dark themes for twitter, youtube, and reddit because I love the way it looks and it helps prevents eye strain. All websites should have the option.

I prefer white text on black/gray background in general. Easy on the eyes, and there's a small tinge of nostalgia to it from the early days of internet when a ton of pages were white on black.

Also, maybe I'm crazy, but the light theme here seems way more eye-strainy than elsewhere. I could swear that the contrast is harsher here.

I use light and always have. Years ago when I first started using the site I didn't know there was an option so I just got used to it. I wouldn't throw a fit if they just forced the dark theme though.

Dark - Seems easier on the eyes

I've been on this site for years and I just realized there was a dark theme. Mind. Blown.

Always light theme. Dark just feels gross to me...it's like an edgy early 2000s website.

I can't believe so many use the dark theme, it's hideous.

Light theme destroys the rod cells in my eyes. Every time I access GB on a device that's not mine I die a little on the inside.

Dark. Always.

Whenever I log in from some other device the first thing I do is switch it back to the dark theme.

Dark. Honestly, I wish it was the default. Every time I have to sign back in, it reverts back to white. At night especially, the white hurts my eyes and just makes me want to close my eyes. The dark is a lot easier on the eyes in that respect.

Except it isn't. At least for people like me with astigmatism.

Giant Bomb has been, and always will be, a dark website.

Light theme exists only to check for dead pixels.

Back on the old site I only used the dark theme because it looked the best. Now I only use the light theme because it looks the best. Dark theme sucks. Fight me.

@dudeglove: Dark for me because at my job all my IDEs etc run on dark themes.

Light: Because the white text burns into my eyes after reading for just a minute or two. I then see paragraphs of text off screen and it freaks me out and hurts my eyes. Imagine an open window blind overlaying your vision. Happy that so many people like the dark theme, but I'm even more happy they give us the option. I might not frequent the site as much as I do if only dark existed.

Also, dark theme looks hella seedy. Maybe that's a plus for some people.

I have light sensitive eyes so dark themes are always a good option for me. Also used less phone battery.

I get unreasonably angry when I check GB on a work computer and it has the white theme. It's the pits.

Exactly! I get this too! I never understood why people would use dark themes and be able to put up with it. I guess it doesn't happen to everyone.

I hope they don't get rid of the light theme like Jeff was hinting at.

There is only the dark theme. There is no white theme. Not to me at any rate, unless I wanted to burn my retinas.

I stick with the old default, dark. Looks nicer and is less bright on my eyes.

I think I've just become accustomed to the light theme on every UI to the point where it's kind of impossible to adjust to the dark theme; it's hard for the eyes to adjust to a total shift in contrast when you've been looking at something the same way for years and years. This applies to GB, Twitter, NeoGAF... everything.

Light, I just switched to dark to remember why I don't like it. It's the red font that kills me. I don't like the difference in the contrast for reading user names. It's too dim compared to the background.
