As the title indicates, looking for suggestions on JRPGs for iOS. In particular I'd prefer any from the PS1-2 era although I understand that the majority are SNES era games.

I found a lot of topics on this via Google but all from 1-2 years ago so I imagine there have been some good releases since then. I know that there are some good iOS specific ones like Chaos Rings but I'm looking primarily at ports. Since I don't play many JRPGs I'm going to rely on you more knowledgeable duders for advice on which ones are good ports. Thanks for the help!

From what I understand, all of them are pretty bad ports

You could try Doom RPG. Not a JRPG, but the two have similar roots and both are turn based.

@thiago123: The iOS version of the original Shin Megami Tensei was recently released in an official localized form.

If you want overpriced ports of Final Fantasy games with terrible updated graphics or a Free-to-play version of Tales of Phantasia that shoves microtransactions into every orfice, then yeah, there are some JRPGs.

I decided to go with Final Fantasy Tactics. From what I could see in forums it is a very competent port, and about the only PS1 era one I found. I missed this very popular game back in the 90's and after a couple hours with it last night, I am enjoying it...just have to remember to save! I realize it is a tactical strategy game more than a JRPG, but the turn based nature works well on the touch screen and there is enough JRPGness to it to satisfy the craving for now.

@believer258: Good suggestion. I actually played through Wolfenstein RPG 4-5 years ago and really enjoyed it. Ofcourse, at that time I was starving for decent phone games, but also theres the fact that I am a sucker for anything with id's name. Will have to look into it in the future.

@hailinel: Yes, I did see that. Will have to look up some reviews. Shamefully, my only real exposure to 'MegaTen' is from the P4 endurance run here so I did not want to dive into it just yet. Thanks for the feedback.

@arbitrarywater: Thanks for the helpful comment.

Sh-sh-sh-shin megami tensei, yo! Not sure if that's what you're looking for though. It's more dungeoncrawly, not much on characters and dialogue like many other JRPGs but I'm playing the SNES translation right now and I've had a pretty good time with it so far.

It's not an rpg but 999 is japanese as fuck and it's a good read as far as visual novels go. I'm an expert in the field, I've read three of them.

Didn't they take out all the puzzles in the iOS version of 999?

@bbalpert: yeah, the only interactivity left in it is the door choices, so it's fully a visual novel. Like I said, it's not a JRPG but it still scratches that same itch. To me anyway.

I remember hearing that the port of Chrono Trigger was good besides a few UI issues.
