Like the topic states, I was looking into getting a DS for the first time, and wanted to ask for advice/opinions

I was leaning toward a DS Lite, as its backwards compatible, and its pretty cheap. also, I don't think i would use all the features on a DSi, since my phone can do them, and better

Also, i want to wait and see if/when Nintendo puts out an updated version of the 3DS, as its pretty pricey, and I am not a fan of 3D
So are there any major advantages that the DSi has over a Lite?

thanks in advance

@H_U_R_D: First off, the 3DS is backwards compatible with most DS games (but not GBA games obviously). Second, you can turn off the 3D on the system at any time.
With that said, if you're not interested in putting down the $250 for the new system, I suggest going with the DS Lite if you're DYING for a DS. It's cheap, it's smaller & brighter than the original DS, it can play GBA games, etc. If you can find a decent used one for a good price (like less than $100), go for it. Even buying a new system isn't breaking the bank.

There were no questions at all in your topic. Not one single question o.O

But if you're leaning towards the DS Lite then get that?
It shouldn't be about what we want but what you want in a handheld. If you don't think you would be using the features that are exclusive to the DSi then there's no reason to pay for it.
Same goes for the 3DS.

@VinceNotVance: sorry for not clarifying, by backwards compatibility, i meant for GBA games
@ZeForgitten: you are correct, i completely forgot to ask a question lol - i meant to ask if there were any HUGE advantages to a DSi over a Lite, and vice versa

The DSi has a camera, is a little bit thinner and gives you access to DSiware, but on the flip side it does not have the ability to play GBA games. Personally for the GBA games alone I'd hit up the DS lite since that opens up a pretty awesome catalog of games on top of the already impressive DS lineup. Also I don't know too much about what sort of DSiware is out there, but I'm fairly certain that there's nothing that tops the GBA library.

If you're not really into GBA games then it's an aesthetic choice really. The price difference between the DS lite and DSi, as long as you don't plan on going XL, is ~20 USD, which isn't too bad. So in that case you're picking between a little thicker and glossy vs. thinner and matte. That's a personal choice though, so I can't be of much help.

I think you're headed in the right direction with your line of thinking. If you're not going to use the DSi features at all, the ability to play GBA games (whether you use it or not) is still a real boon.

It sounds like the DS Lite is the right choice for you. DSi is just a typical DS with a few extra bells and whistles strapped on to it. A few extra bells and whistles you don't seem to want or have a need for. You should go and get yourself a Lite and all the GBA and DS Pokemon games, so you can get started on catching them all.
