This doesn't really mean anything.  Valve can still pump out Portal games if they choose to and  Swift is still in the industry.  There is no real loss here.

I hear what you're saying. But at the same time I'm thinking about heavy competition between them 2.

Heavy competition in what regard?

I don't think he would go to to the Dark Void developers just to make a game to compete with Valve's Portal. And plus, competition is a good thing if it were to happen.

@slayerofheroes: All the better for us.  Competition should drive the creation of better products (the strange exception being Guitar Hero v. Rock Band).

If he came up with Portal, he's too talented to stick around making Portal sequels.

Edit:  Uhh, 'she'.

Heavy competition in the sense of both developers pumping out top quality games.

Very interesting. I took some interest in Kim Swift's career after playing Portal, and have been following any progress on Portal 2, little that there has been. It's a shame to hear she's leaving Valve and I'm curious to see what impact her leaving will have on Portal 2.

I saw a couple of interviews with her for L4D2 and when approached with Portal 2 questions you could tell she wasn't happy with its lack of progress. She didn't outright say it, but I have a feeling that she was being treated less and less as the Portal designer, and more and more as just another Valve employee. I bet that was a reality shock and probably a big disappointment for her. Not surprised she's leaving, if that's the case.
