Only 740,000 units?! I mean this game was suppose to be THE ONE, and it couldnt even break a million in its first month. Dont get me wrong I loved MGS4 and own a PS3 but I was very disappointed with the sales numbers, this game should have ATLEAST broke a million, what happened?
MGS4 Selling 740,000 units.. Anyone else think thats Poor?!
Compared to games like COD4 (11 million) and Halo 3 (9 million)
Yeah, but its okay
The PS3 install base is still small, just gotta give it time
You mean more than twice as much as its predecessor, not including the 250k MGS4 bundles sold? What a failure!
Moron lol

I know i personally bought a bundle that came with the game, so i'm not sure if that counts for sales. Also it did come out in the summer. I bet it will sell a lot more in the holiday season for 2008. But with so many great games coming out im afraid the holiday season will be flooded like it was last year.
Yes its pretty bad, I mean cows sat and said it would sell millions in one day and secure the ps3 as the market leader. lol didn't happen.
"Stapler_Hernandez said:In what way? Most games never reach even 250k in their LIFETIME sales. Selling 1 million in one month in the beginning of summer while its predecessor sold 300k in the fall/holiday season is terrible, right?"You mean more than twice as much as its predecessor, not including the 250k MGS4 bundles sold? Oh guilty, your picture on that jetski still gives me nightmares.
Really only a little below what I thought it would sell, I figured it would be closer to a million. Still that is a lot of sales.
"anything below 700,000 this gen is not profitable"Thanks for the baseless bullshit.

you have to be retarded if you think MGS4 is profitable at 700k
I think more people will start to get it when the PS3 starts to get more popular (if that ever happens).
it's not terrible at all, especially since it got near 1 million with bundles. Plus, metal gear and ps3 are much more popular outside of the U.S.
That number is from NPD which is US sales only and that translates to roughly 1/5th of all current console owners bought the game in the US since there's about 5 million consoles sold. As mentioned, that doesn't count for bundles either, so IMO it's a great number. Of course, there's little else to play so that both helps and hurts if you think about it. Seems that it should be higher I suppose without there being more games to play on the system.
"That doesn't include bundles. I suspect it's at least 900,000 with those.
"
Thats a great point. 774,000 is only in America and does not count bundles. It is probably like 4-5 million worldwide counting bundles.
Well it's the PS3...and PS3 owners still don't buy games. not at the same clip we see on other consoles.
EVERYONE: That DOES NOT include any bundles. That is just stand alone game. All the 80 gig PS3 bundle with MGS4 ISN'T included in that count.
Konami said they needed to sell 1 million to succeed with MGS4. They sold at least 900,000 in the US, and around 2.4 million if you count worldwide sales. I would say its a success. 1 million sales in the US when the PS3 has only sold maybe 5.4 million? That's pretty good.
"EVERYONE: That DOES NOT include any bundles. That is just stand alone game. All the 80 gig PS3 bundle with MGS4 ISN'T included in that count."well then those numbers seem good enough.
1.3 million on day one, you fail on so many levels

Yeah Aaron you are the genius here. TC = fail.
Ok god, this site really is like gamespot. That's only US sales. It has sold over three million worlwide.

1. It's PS3 exclusive, theres not that many PS3's out there compared to 360's/Wii's
2. It caused a significant increase in sales
3. It sold well past 2 million(I think) Worldwide
4. doesn't include bundles/Limited Edition
plus, many will still buy it from now untill Holiday season
it's a success
It's been known for some time that MG isn't as popular a franchise as it appears. From day one it alienated a lot of players with it's very distinct gameplay. It sells very well and it's arguably the only franchise left that Konami gives a damn about anymore, but it's always had an over-inflated reputation when money left pockets.
MGS4 is a good game, but it's proven that it didn't have the gravitas to sell the number of PS3s many thought it did, and the number of PS3 owners that ignored it as well only cemented that fact.
It reminds me of Metroid Prime 3, a great game that came and went, with crappy sales and the only reason being that the audience that wanted it wasn't the huge Wii demographic buying mini games. Just like most PS3s are BD players instead of game consoles. The fans bought it - that is - the fans with PS3s bought it, the rest looked on waiting for the next Blu Ray movie to drop.
I think its a combination of things, for example the PS3 doesn't have as large of install base in the US. Its a game that doesn't appeal to the mass market and it came out in June. If this game was a Christmas game then it probably would of sold more copy's at launch. Call of Duty 4 didn't sell 10 million copy's in its first day, and its on 3 platforms, PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Halo appeals to the mass market and so does GTA4.
I wouldn't be too worried about it because the game will sell more over time, probably in the 2-3 million mark. Why, becuase those fans holding out will probably end up buying a PS3 when it comes out and will be picking this game up.
