So, obviously, 2008 is past us now...and again, I'm caving in to the herd.  You folks make me feel like more of a failure than I already am.  Then again, when I realize that I'm only 7 years younger than Angelina Jolie...I realize just exactly how much of a failure most of us really are.  =  /

Anyways, I figured I would throw together a little thing about what I am looking forward to playing in 2009.  Why?  Well, because it makes me feel important and...let's face it...I always seem to hate the things you all like and like the things you all go "WTF" about.

Halo Wars

Hate the franchise or not, this RTS could prove very viable.
Hate the franchise or not, this RTS could prove very viable.
Yes, I fuckin' said it!!!  While I may not be a huge fan of Halo 3, there was a time where I absolutely lived and breathed Halo 1 and 2.  I also kind of enjoy some of the mythos in the Halo universe, as I found out after reading Fall of Reach and The Flood.  Given that Halo was supposed to originally be an RTS, it's interesting to see this being a 360 exclusive.  So many companies (namely EA) have tried to make an RTS viable on a console, and I would honestly say that Red Alert 3 did a pretty good job of getting as close as I think it could get.  Despite that, Ensemble is at the helm on this one...and Age of Empires is the muthafuckin' jam!  Therefore, I'm highly interested to see how they handle the controls issue, but moreover, I'm curious to see how their RTS will play out with online play.  Could this be as big as the original franchise, or will it falter into nothingness and bargain bins?

Prototype

Death spikes + open world = Heaven
Death spikes + open world = Heaven
If you didn't know, I'm a MASSIVE fucking fan of Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and still hold it on high as a pinnacle in open-world sandbox amazingness.  The fact that the guys at Radical are getting a chance to bring that same level of creativity and destruction to the "next-gen" (why do we still keep calling it that?) makes me mark out like crazy, son!!!  From the morphing abilities to the plot, even down to the way that the city lives and breathes, interacting with you...man, it's just NUTS to think of what this game could be capable of.  Still, while I've been anticipating this since it was originally announced, there is still that looming voice in the back of my head saying "don't get too excited, Josh".  It's just hard not to.  I mean, just watch it in action and you'll understand the crazy hype that this game should be getting and really isn't.

Darksiders

All outta bubblegum?
All outta bubblegum?
While there has been very little info trickling out about this title, the fact that it tries to mix a God of War combat system with a dungeon crawler sense just gets me giddier than getting a blowjob from Anne Hathaway!!!  Playing as one of the Four Horsemen in a stylized version of the aftermath from the Book of Revelation is enough to sell me...but I get to fight on a fucking horse too?!?!?!  I don't know, maybe this game will just turn out to be like Conan was:  good for achievement points and virtual boobies.  However, it would seem like the minimal amount of talk coming out about the game would mean they've been putting their nose to the grindstone pretty damn hard.  Here's to hoping for the best from this title!

Dante's Inferno

Can EA prove that they are capable of bring more viable, original IPs to retail shelves?
Can EA prove that they are capable of bring more viable, original IPs to retail shelves?
Okay, so it may not be confirmed for '09, but I'm just praying and hoping for it.  I've been very vocal about how much I wanted The Lost to be released when it was in development by Irrational back in the day.  Well, take that and mix it with the absolute amazing amount of polish and replayability that Dead Space had on it...and throw in a bit of "I fucking loved Everything or Nothing", and you can understand why I'm popping a boner over this game.  Although all we've gotten was a teaser trailer that presumably had in-game-engine-based footage, it just seems like the guys at EA Redwood are the RIGHT guys to tackle this one.  The fact that EA would even greenlight this project is enough to make anyone open their eyes.  Still, just like Prototype, there's that voice in the back of my head saying "don't get too excited, Josh".  We'll see when more info is released, but I'm gonna say keep your eyes open for this one.

Brutal Legend

ROCK THE FUCK OUT!!!
ROCK THE FUCK OUT!!!
Who the fuck ISN'T looking forward to this?  I absolutely despise Jack Black, and yet I'm looking forward to it.  Thanks to Tim Schafer's willingness to be bold and different...and EA's newfound willingness to do the same...it just seems natural to be excited about a game where you play as a roadie who loves metal and basically plays through what I would assume is the imagination of Tenacious D's dreams!  Actually...I think that's ALL that needs to be said.

Now, with all of that out of the way...what's the one game I'm anticipating more than anything?  You might be surprised:

Splatterhouse

This character model alone shows the lengths that BottleRocket will go to for interesting visuals.
This character model alone shows the lengths that BottleRocket will go to for interesting visuals.
If you look at BottleRocket's history with Mark of Kri and Rise of the Kasai, it's hard to not be behind this game.  While those games had a very cartoon/comic-book art style to them, they were still brutally violent.  It was actually one of the reasons the games were so fucking awesome, and BottleRocket definitely knew how to make an interesting and compelling combat system.  Knowing that they are developing a revamp on a classic franchise like Splatterhouse only seems like a perfect fit.  The screenshots all look absolutely gorgeous, the work on the character model of Rick makes child's play of other games in many ways, and the violence is so over-the-top that it's hard to not be drawn to it.  Sure, there is always that chance in the game just sucking so horrificly...but when you go back and play the first three games, there really wasn't anything bad about those other than the fact that they are old.  Maybe my anticipation about this game is due to my nostalgia factor kicking in, but with so little coverage out there, it seems like BottleRocket is doing everything possible to get this right.

And when you look at Mark of Kri and Rise of the Kasai, it's hard to imagine that they could get it wrong.

Thank y'all for reading, and now...for you!  What are some of the games you are most looking forward to in 2009 and why?

Right now, my most anticipated game would have to be inFamous. I'm so excited for that game. Looks sweet.

Heh, Ultimate Destruction is probably the best superhero game I've ever played. Lots of time spent with that one. If Prototype (which I have never heard of until just now) is like that, I'm psyched for it.

Also, you always say you hate HALO! Not Halo 3! Oh, lord, my reality suffocates me . . .

Halo, in general, I just say that for the rag factor.  To be honest, it's just Halo 3 that I have most of my problems with.  You don't ever wanna try me on Midship, son.

I was a huge fan of Ultimate Destruction, and it really showed that the last gen of consoles was far from dead.  Unfortunately, it had a bit of a weak story to it...but in the scheme of things, I don't think you needed much of a story when you were beating the shit out of everything and anything.  The time trials and such on the game, however, were a great way of adding replay value.  It makes you go back, look at Crackdown, and realize just how much of Ultimate Destruction can be found in it.  lol

I won't lie:  I think the only reason I love Crackdown so much is because it's everything that Ultimate Destruction couldn't be due to the limitations of the console.  Prototype should end up being fucking incredible!

As for inFamous...I don't honestly know enough about the game other than it's basically like playing the origins of a comic-book-styled character.  That's cool and all, but what is the REAL draw to the game...besides the fact that it's made by the incredible team at Sucker Punch?  I'm a massive fan of the Sly Cooper games as well...

All those games look pretty good. I played Mark of Kri, but I've never heard of Splatterhouse, that looks promising. Some of mine are:

MadWorld: It looks different and I'm always looking for something for my Wii.

Resident Evil 5: Just a fan of the series.

Wii Sports Resort with Wii Motion Plus: More Wii fun.

Fallout 3: DLC... I liked this game and this gives me more reason to dive back in.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 All-Play: I love my golf games and the Wii has not disappointed. I hope they incorporate Wii Motion Plus... man that would be awesome.

I always look forward to big surprises and I'll be keeping an eye out on the ones you've mentioned too, should be another good year.

Wait, okay. Dante's Inferno is not a new IP. It's also probably the worst idea ever. Like making a Shakespeare FPS.

And, Nine Inch Nails for the music? EA has gone waaaaaaaaaaaay too far.

I am looking forward to Prototype, and yeah, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction was cool. I am looking forward to Resident Evil 5, COD: MW2, Brutal Legend (which you put, nice), and Killzone 2, but all of the games you listed I have at least an interest. I don't know much about Splatterhouse yet, but it could be a sleeper hit this year.

Ark, where did you hear that Dante's Inferno is an FPS?  From what I'm to understand, it is very much a third-person game like Dead Space was...and frankly, Dead Space was thoroughly badass.

Moreover, I don't think that a game has to be on the same literary level as Dante's Inferno in order to use it as influence and/or a namesake.  As long as they get the levels of Hell right, put a little of the story into it, and make it thoroughly badass, I can't complain.

And really?  Complaining about NIN for the soundtrack?  Someone never played Quake II...

Anyways, I'm definitely looking forward to far more outside of these games.  Fight Night Round 4 is at the top of my sequels list.  However, when I have my "Most Anticipated" of the year...I don't try to include sequels.  I'm looking at new and interesting properties.  Granted, Halo is a franchise...but this time, it's an RTS.  Splatterhouse was a franchise, but this is a full-on revamp, and I've got a massive hard-on for anything that BottleRocket makes.

Also, is there any way I can request a lock on this for the forum threads?  I think I'm just going to stop posting blogs to forums outright.

Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5 have me most interested. Some DLC for Left 4 Dead would be great. I'm not so sure about Splatterhouse, I always thought Splatterhouse sucked back in the Mega Drive days, I guess I'll wait for reviews on that one.

Street Fighter 4 has me bursting with giddiness. I suck at fighting games but it's looks so amazing. Madworld and The Conduit seem like they will great 3rd party games for the Wii.  Sea of Dreams will be exciting to see. If they don't screw Bioshock up in the process.   DLC for Fallout 3 and Fable 2.
