whats the most atmospheric game you guys ever played? for me i think it would be bioshock (yea pretty mainstream), but the music and the setting really sucked me in
Most atmospheric game
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Maybe because of the hard-science fiction story. Either way I fucking love that game.
Planescape Torment from the old ones.. it really felt like that city is kinda alive.
and this game called Tension. I dunno how the hell to play it, don't really understand the point of the game, but the atmosphere created is an absolute masterpiece.

Yeah, Bioshock is a no brainer :P I love that game.
As some others have mentioned, Batman: Arkham Asylum is also very immersive and atmospheric. It's almost a shame you're "forced" into using the Detective Vision so often since Arkham is so amazing.
I know Halo 3: ODST hasn't come out yet so that's probably why people haven't mentioned but I live in Portugal and I bought it on Friday(played about 4 hours of it so far) and I'm impressed by the atmosphere. Both with and without the VISR it looks terrific. When you're not using VISR there's a hauntingly beatiful reddish glow in the air, small dust from debris falls down like snowflakes and the city clearly shows the amount of destruction it has underwent in the last few hours. With the VISR, the edges of the objects shine and it looks like something from Tron like Jeff stated in his review. I never thought a game with Halo 3's engine could look this great.
Tony Hawk Underground. I know it sounds weird but but let me explain. I know what most people expect in an answer is a game with an amazing environment and setting but for me, I never felt as engrossed in a game as I did with this entry in the series. I'd pop it in, sit back, and enjoy the music while skating around and searching for new unnatural lines. I mean, the game evolved my musical tastes, something I can't say about any other game I've played.
of course, theres also Bioshock, Dead Space, Metroid and the like but I figured if I was gonna include Underground I should at least explain that choice.
I would have to say Mass Effect. Atmospheric doesn't have to equal dark. But everything about that game immersed me. The greatest example of this is simply walking around the Citadel.
The more traditional answers would be Bioshock, Dead Space, and Resident Evil 4.
The Half Life series. Hell, everything Valve does has a very distinct atmosphere.
Diablo 1 and 2 are some of the most atmospheric games I've ever played.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
I can just sit there in a tunnel and crap my pants and there could be nothing around. Great lighting too.

It was really great, it conveyed the loneliness of the rookie so well.
The halo games have always had a great soundtrack and by the looks of it ODST is no different.

Agreed. The soundtrack of Halo 3: ODST as well as the previous Halo games is fantastic. It always compliments and emphasizes perfectly the feelings the player is feeling at the moment- epicness, loneliness, a rush of adrenaline, fear, it's fantastic. I'll never forget the menu of Halo 3 for the song in the background.
Listen to this piece of music while you read my post: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXeZ5GX6mUU&feature=related
If Tim Burton ever made a game it would be Medievil.
Nuff Said!
God I miss The 90'es... :-(
" Metroid Prime and Half-Life. Extremely isolated atmosphere. "@TheMustacheHero said:
" STALKER "My thought's exactly.
How about The Last Express? Eavesdropping on conversations in different languages, people going about their business in real time, memorable art style, top notch sound design and constant dramatic tension - that game is dripping with atmosphere.
I totally forgot about STALKER. Man that game has a certain grime and has way more than enough substance to keep you immersed so there's nothing breaking your experience.
Far Cry 2 definitely had a great atmosphere. If you understood the simple concept that you're enemies to all sides of the conflict, your position as a solitary character really adds to the solitary nature of the gameplay and exploration. It really never got any better than getting on those hand gliders and flying across the savanna.
