What game character made you emotionally connect with them the most?
Whether it be some spiky-haired character from an dialog heavy RPG or some random citizen you mowed down by 'accident' in GTA. Discuss why the game was actually able to let you connect with that character.
For me it was probably Yorda from Ico. Playing as Ico I actually really started to care for Yorda and do whatever it took to save her and keep her from harm.
Most emotionally attached character?
The Boss, Big Boss, Solid Snake, The Entire Cast of FF7, Most of the Cast of FFX, Niko Bellic, Most of Mass Effects Characters, Tennenbaum from Bioshock, Lara Croft, Jackie Estacardo, Alyx Vance, Kratos.
Ill get back to you on the Lost Odyssey Characters.
"The Boss, Big Boss, Solid Snake, The Entire Cast of FF7, Most of the Cast of FFX, Niko Bellic, Most of Mass Effects Characters, Tennenbaum from Bioshock, Lara Croft, Jackie Estacardo, Alyx Vance, Kratos.ugh...aah... mind narrowing it down a bit. You just basically blurted out "i like all the popular ones!" which is totally okay. They're popular for a reason. But I was hoping to get a bit more of a discussion going on of why you felt something for these characters.
Ill get back to you on the Lost Odyssey Characters.

- Alex in Half-Life 2. That game does such a good job of conveying emotions in-game that most CGI videos can't even keep up. They put a lot of work into the body language and facial animations.
- Yorda (the girl) from Ico. She didn't talk much, but helping her through levels and protecting her from the shadow creatures got me attached to her.
- Your friend from Another World/Out of this World. He was the only friend you had in that bizarre world and you saved each other's asses numerous times. He's a good man!
Yeah sure, ill elaborate a little.

I empathized with The Boss and Big Boss, because of what they gave emotionally and physically for their country, Solid Snake Because of what he put himself through ( Cant Elaborate much further without MGS4 Spoilers ) FF7 Cast because of what they stood for, Stopping ShinRa, Stopping Sephiroth, Barretts relationship with Dyne and how he adopted Dynes Daughter Marleene, Vincent being locked away for so long, Red XIII's Relationship with his Grandfather and lack of one with his Father, The death of Aeris, Clouds almost psychotic behaviour and his stuborn coldness to anybody who wanted to get close to him.
Yuna and Tidus's relationship, Tidus's Relationship with his Father, Wakkas brothers death having such an effect on Wakka and Lulu, How Niko was just a total tortured soul who couldnt seem to do anything right, but understood how his actions and his quest for revenge hurt everybody around him. I loved how Ashley in Mass Effect was so totally human, being bigoted and naive about certain issues, How Angry Wrex was, How Crazy and Nihilistic Saren was, I felt sorry for Tennenbaum from Bioshock and how she was making amends for her sins( Again cant elaborate too much without major Spoilers)
How Lara in TR: Legend was so angry about how her friend got her mother trapped in Valhalla, and how much of a Dark Side Lara actually has, The Execution threat was pretty intense, A theme that seems to have continued for the new Underworld game, as the trailer shows Croft Manor on fire and lara stood outside in the rain looking like she has gone completely batshit crazy, How much Jackie loved his Girlfriend in the darkness, but couldn't explain before she was killed, and how his quest for revenge has probably doomed him. Not sure i have to explain Alyx Vance, one of the most human videogame characters ever, and Kratos, Well i guess i just feel sorry for the Guy, after all Aries made him go crazy enough to Kill his own Wife and Kids, Psychologically he is just totally broken and has so much anger its imense.
I hope that was enough of an explanation, I just sympathized and empathized with the characters i named, for a multitude of different reasons, maybe i saw alot of myself in some of those characters, or events similar to events in my own life, all this reflection on Videogame characters is far too emo for me, i just liked them because they were flawed and that fundementally makes them very human.
I hope that was enough for you, Im not explaining it anymore, heh.
I'm a strong believer, and I think most of these answers prove my point, that you can only really get attached to a character in a game if they appear in game play in some form. For instance someone, mentioned Alyx Vance. I think if she only appeared in cutscenes, very few people wouldn't give a crap if she lived or died.
Another example is Sargent Johnson from Halo. You fought alongside him through three games and what happened to him meant something, however Miranda Keyes only ever really appeared in cut scenes so I never really gave any thought about her.
Alyx in HL2, Nathan and everyone else in Uncharted, Sora and everyone else in KH, Daxter in J&D, Snake in MGS.
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head..
"Solid Snake.Exactly. Near the ending made me really emotional.
I'm not going to spoil it, but I almost shed some tears at the first ending of MGS4.
"
Sargent Johnson from Halo.
I tend to agree with Yahtze on this, To me he was just basically the black guy from the movie Predator, Literally the same character.
I half expected Arnie to jump out and say ' Dylan, you son of a bitch, Whats the matter, CIA got you pushing too many pencils'

you're right that he's not the most rounded character. Yet I was just using him as an example as how he is integrated into gameplay actually made me feel something for that Carl Weathers inspired character.
Gordon Freeman in HL, Valve did an awesome job making the player feel like the same person as Gordon.
Snake, just for the journey from the PS1 era to the PS3 and how it kept on delivering was just mind blowing
Frank Jaeger or Cyborg Ninja in MGS on PSX, that little speech he gives towards the end before he dies got to me.
This Guy:

In Suikoden II you run into a woman wearing an eye patch running around a city who gives you a package. Five seconds after she runs off Clive shows up asking if you saw a strange woman going by. After you deny seeing her, Clive runs off and doesn't appear till later in the game. If you recruit Clive soon enough you enable an optional sidequest. This sidequest goes into Clive's backstory and the reasons hes hunting down this mysterious woman. In order to complete the side story you have to complete the game in under 20 hours (which is nearly impossible to do).
Clive talks about how hes in a secrety society called "The Howling Moon Guild".
Needless to say his story is incredibly captivating and is one of the lesser known characters in the series. The final duel is one of the best scenes I've seen in a game.
Dak'kon from Planescape: Torment, JC Denton from Deus Ex and Jack from Vampire - the Masquerade: Bloodlines
"Dak'kon from Planescape: Torment, JC Denton from Deus Ex and Jack from Vampire - the Masquerade: Bloodlines"Never played Planescape Torment, But i agree with most of the Deus Ex chars and certainly Smiling Jack from bloodlines, i also thought Jeanette and Nines were awesome too.
Wanda From shadow - byu the end of the game i was absolutely distraught xD
And of course -solid snake - now he gets some well deserved rest
