I was just wondering what everyone felt the most overrated games from last year and the first half of this year were?
(To be clear, the game has to have already been released, which is why I said first half of this year!)

Here are mine:

2007:
Call of Duty 4: (Uninspired + Railshooter = Uninspired Railshooter.
Puzzle Quest: I Love puzzle games, but couldn't hate this game anymore.

2008:
Battlefield Bad Company: It was good, but definitely not great.

Agree? Disagree? Got something to say? Let it be known! Don't be shy!

Do you even know what a rail shooter is?  Because that's not what COD4 is.

No games come to mind.

2007: Call Of Duty 4 - A fun game but too much of a rehash to recieve and critical acclaim.

2008: GTA IV - It's didn't have the "magic" that the other GTA games possessed and was very repetetive.

I think you are going to piss some people off for those choices, man. Alot of COD 4 fanboys out there. Halo 3 was a bit overrated for me because it really didn't thrill me like GTA 4 did.

I wasn't to impressed with Assassin's Creed, and Puzzle Quest was just way to repetitive for me to get into.

I have to disagree about GTA4.  If by magic you mean jetpacks and whatever other kinds of insanity were in previous GTA's then Saints Row seems to be the way to go now.  It seems that GTA has decided to take the semi-refined real world path, rather than the insane world that SR2 will likely be.  I'm not saying the goffiness was a bad thing, but the two are separate beings now.

I personally think that Metal Gear Solid 4 is the most overrated game of the year. I am not a Sony hater and I love the series so I don't need any troll crap. I just found the game to become stale after Acts 1/2 and I don't really like it when I am watching a game more than playing it.

Assassin's Creed was way to overrated. The whole science/time travel thing really annoyed me. They took a really sweet time period and sick game mechanics and added lame techno-garble during the fight sequences. The demos and previews looked so much better then the final game.

What GTA IV is missing is elaborate missions, sick humor, stats, all of the sick vehicles and weapons, and a satisfying storyline. What I missed most of course was the elaborate missions that made past GTA games so enjoyable and hilarious.

Thank you! My sentiments exactly.

I borrowed a friend's PS3 just to play this game, and was completely let down. Why did they even bother adding stealth, when it wasn't necessary to succeed? Why not just make it a straight action game? Oh well, there's always the next Metal Gear...

2007: Guitar Hero III especially the Wii version (which was identical to the PS2 version) didn't really deserve half the praise it received for just adding new songs alongwith a throwaway versus mode and a steeper difficulty curve which essentially ruined what made the Guitar Hero series so appealing to casual and hardcore gamers in the first place. I feel like critics went really nice on this one because they were impressed that Neversoft was able to pull off something that looked and played very close to Guitar Hero II except with a higher budget leading to a few more popular songs on the playlist. The tradeoff wasn't really worth it.

2008: I felt the Wii port of Okami received a lot more credit than it deserved just because it gave a critically successful game with lukewarm sales a second chance to really catch on with gamers. The problem was that this title still costed twice as much as the one and a half year old PS2 vesion of the game and ultimately took away the parchment filter in favor of 480p and widescreen support. The sensor bar based controls were good when they worked but they were incredibly touchy considering how simple the gestures the game would have you perform. While its still a much more polished experience than the Wii's Twilight Princess they really have no excuse for the lack of new content or graphical tweaks for the Wii hardware. I don't see how a few higher-resolution textures would have broke the bank for Ready At Dawn's port of the game. I'm still not saying Okami on the Wii was a bad game, I just don't think it deserved to be up there with other original games in the 9s category, maybe mid-8s would be fine for this.

I really did not see what made Assassin's Creed so amazing, but besides that I am gonna go with Grand Theft Auto IV.  Sure it was a great game, but after I beat it and played the multiplayer for a few weeks I have barely touched it

Honestly, I was enjoying MGS 4 for the first half of the game, but it just got tiring.  Kojima should have just made a movie altogether.

Im glad to see all of the different responses, hopefully that is what will make Giant Bomb great.  A wide variety of opinions is what will hopefully make this website great.  I'm glad people disagree with me, because then all the games would be the same if everyone agreed all the time.

Also, make sure you add your own picks for most overrated games of 2007/2008. I want to see more opinions.

2007

Mass effect(i found the story didn't hit the usual bioware pedigree and the enemy AI was god awful.)
2008
GTA IV (never been a fan of GTA and really enjoyed the first say 30% of the game then it began to drag by 35-40% i just didnt want to play the game anymore the repetition was killing me.)

And to explain my "railshooter" comment (even though I guess I really shouldn't....
I just meant that COD 4 felt too much like a railshooter where everything happened in the same way every time you played (enemy placement, interactivity, etc.) Plus I just didn't feel there was any "style" to the game. (Gotto have games with a sense of style..)

But overall, I just wasn't a fan of the gameplay...it always felt kind of blah online and offline.

OVERRATED:

2007: Assassins Creed, without a doubt. I was really disappointed by the game as a whole. Way too repetitive.
2008: Burnout: Paradise got wayyy to much praise. They took out the true fun parts of the game. I wasn't into the whole big city aspect of the game at all.

UNDERRATED:

2007: Lost Planet I thought was a really fun experience. The graphics were sick, and the online was pretty cool too. I think it got way to much criticism IMO.
2008: Condemned 2: Yeah, the story sucked the second half, but it was one of the creepiest games I've played since Silent Hill 2.

Overrated? How can anyone miss Halo 3, after launch and pre-launch it was madness. Assassins Creed was also a bit, pre-launch of course... And perhaps GTA IV, a tad.

I don't see the appeal of Halo 3. I played it for a week. I didn't care about the single player enough to finish it, though i got close, and the multiplayer just didn't get me hard.

I don't know how anyone can call the Orange Box overrated. Unless it raped your mother and stole all of your ice cream, you can't justify it with reason.

I don't think Mario Kart Wii is "overrated" so much as it is super-hyped.  It was received to a smattering of warm reviews -- not hot, by the way -- which seem to fit the game nicely.  And can you sincerely claim the Orange Box is overrated?  It's a library of gaming for the price of any other generic war shooter.

I think people are getting overhyped mixed up with overrated.

Overhyped

When the game develops too much hype, or buzz, then you think it deserves/should have. This usually occurs only pre-launch, where a game being over 'hyped' after launch would be called overrated. For example the game is getting advertisement placement everywhere, buses, website ads, magazine ads etc, as well as great feedback from websites and magazines. This causes the masses to think the game is good, and with enough of the above, a game can reach amazing hype levels.

Overrated

When the game has been released is recieving too much positive feedback, falsely so, then you think it deserves/should have. Occurs after the games launch, when the mass public gets their hands on the game, and the titles is still being overyhped contrary to the previous positivity pre-launch. This is rare since the masses usually have only one main opinion, though.

I think way more games are underrated then overrated, and way more games are overhyped then underhyped... Hmmm, wonder why that is?

I don't think CoD4 was overrated at all, the SP was really fun and a great experience, and even a good story, but the main key of the game was the MP, which was not overrated at all... so, I have to disagree.

Overhyped Haze
Overrated madden (insert year here)
underrated Bioshock  I know it won a lot of awards but it didn't generate as much to gamers as I think it should of
and as far as CoD4 being a rail shooter, by your logic there everything but STALKER wasn't a rail shooter

COD4 definitely, that game was just so linear it was only worth a rental for the single-player and then the multiplayer was exciting for about 2 weeks.
I mean it was fun the time I spent with it, but that time was just to short.

2007: Call of Duty 4: I can definitely think of a two world summary. Grenades suck.

2008: Grand Theft Auto 4: Many of you are probably gonna disagree, but all of the things that made GTA great in my eyes like side quests, activities, etc. were great in San Andreas. in GTA IV all there was to do was take one of your lonely pathetic friends and play a game of pool or darts or w/e. Not my idea of fun. I liked working out riding bikes and such in SA.
