My game of the year is MGS/GTA IV

I've been listening to all of the bombcasts, and I just got to the 2008 deliberation episode. Of course it came down to GTA IV vs. MGS IV, as anyone should be able to tell you. This forced me to compare those games to the current crop, and I realized that if those games were released in 2009 or 2010 I would still have picked them as my top contenders. Am I the only one who thinks this? Is ME2 better than GTA IV? Rarg, I want more amazing games.

Looking back at some of the games released during 2008 it was a hell of a year, but I still think we're seeing amazing games in 2010. Personally I liked Mass Effect 2 much more than Grand Theft Auto IV.

MGS4 hell naw, GTAIV has a better chance, but still no.

Not me. GTAIV hasn't aged well with me for the last couple of years. TLAD was cool, but TBoGT was kind of a pain in the ass with all the gay/latino jokes. I mean it had to be done, but not every conversation with a character had to be that.
 
Haven't played MGS4 (yep) so I ain't gonna go into that, but I'll suffice to say that the arguments against it during the debate was well received by my buds.

I thought GTAIV was pretty bad, I'd say any game I've played that was released this year was more enjoyable. I haven't played MGS4 in it's full form, and while I do see the appeal, I still prefer Splinter Cell Conviction for 'stealth'

As much as I liked GTAIV and MGS4, RDR was a better and more enjoyable Rockstar game than GTA4 ever was (maybe barring The Ballad of Gay Tony.) And MGS4 wasn't nearly as good an MGS game as MGS3.

Honestly, I think Dead Space will have longer legs than either.  MGS4 was enthralling as a graphical showpiece at the time and as the summation of 20 years of fiction.  GTA4 was the highwater mark of sandbox games at the time.  Dead Space is just an expertly crafted production.

Red Dead Redemption is much, much better than GTA IV. Also, being a huge Metal Gear fan, MGS4 was a disappointment. I would easily say it ranks the worst out of MGS1, 2, 3 & 4.

I actually just bought the complete edition of GTA IV (GTA IV + Episodes from Liberty City) today, so I'm looking forward to starting that. Wish I had a PS3 so I could play MGS4.

As someone who played the hell out of GTA4, Got around 1250 points in it if that matters, It would be no GOTY in 2010. As good as the story is, it is hindered by the clunky gameplay.

Those two games wouldn't beat Red Dead for my 2010 GOTY but last year's Uncharted 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum would.

I'm doing the same thing, listening to a 2008 podcast right this minute, working my way through them all.  I completed GTA IV for the second time 3 days ago and yes, it pisses from a great height into Mass Effect 2's gaping mouth.  ME2 is basically dead inside.  Neither GTA IV or ME2 are really joyful games but GTA is an excellent piece of storytelling and genuinely moving (depending on your ending).  This is from a 19 hour second playthrough which just stuck to the story.  I finished Fable 2 this year and I think that also shits from a flaming helicopter onto ME2.

those games weren't even in my top 10 of 2008 (GTAIV wasn't half as good as san andreas or bully, and I don't own a PS3)

I fucking hated GTA 4 I think it's one of the worst games of the generation.
I'm not just hating it because it's popular.
I genuinely hated it everything about from the controls, graphics, characters, horrible attempts at humor, awful story.
I would say anything is better than GTA 4 even Eat lead: the return of Matt Hazard.
