I just want to remind everyone that no opinion has ever been changed by an argument, especially an internet argument.
So you can keep trying, just understand the futility.

@Evan_Buchholz: A lot of low post counts in this thread. It's fun to see people coming out of the wordwork to boast about how offended they are.
@dr_mantas: Nobody is policing your thoughts. If they were then wow would my wife be mad at me. But what you say has consequences that you have to deal with whether you like it or not. They could be positive or negative, they could get you into trouble or win you acclaim, but when you express an opinion to another person what you say will be judged and reacted to. Nobody is suggesting that you CAN'T say whatever you want, but when you do say something that offends someone that's a situation that you need to deal with. It's not always obvious that someone could be hurt by what we say, and if we just try to be a little more civil and a little more cognizant of how we are choosing to express ourselves then it can only lead to a more positive experience for everyone.

they changed the meaning of the word
Nope.
Honestly, the word has evolved in its meaning.
Nope.
Sure, some people might mean it that way. But some people might think gay still means happy, too. It really doesn't in common talk.
Words definitely evolve, our entire language has words that have lost or gained more meaning that before. I can practically guarantee that as the years go on, the impact of it will mean less against homosexuals and more as a general bashing term.
The reason people use the word I would say is because it has power behind it, it's a very rough-said word. It is almost German in that regard. When you say it, you "feel" it. It's a strong word in how it's pronounced. I would say that the "oomph" behind the word takes precedence of it over the derogatory word against gay people.
For instance, I'm "offended" by the word "cunt". It's a word I strongly dislike. Someone mentioned this back when Vinny spammed it in the Bombcast and I wasn't offended, in fact, it was rather funny.
The fact is, don't worry about it. Words only mean things when intent is meant behind it. You could say you love flowers but if you don't then it's meaningless and without purpose.

these people don't post here because they're from SA, or from Neogaf, or from whatever other site. They are just subscribed to watch the videos, they don't need to post on the site. None of these low post count posters have told ryan he's a fucking asshole, but to commend him for apologizing, and they get caught up in arguing with assholes.
@artgarcrunkle: You have diminished me! Farewell! Back to the woodwork! I'll be back with more posts!
Also I'm not offended I just believe you're just adding more to it by attributing people "dick riding" Ryan for apologizing over using a sexual orientation related slur. Even if it is an "ironic viewpoint".
@unordinarily said:
Remember when Vinny said "cunt" .. ? That was pretty neat.
Ryan felt that using this word went against his own moral compass and he apologized for using it. Saying he doesn't have to probably doesn't matter to him - it's how he feels about it that matters in this case. There are very few words I won't use and 0 words I don't think are funny in the right context.
I don't know what the point of me posting anything here is other than I wanted to type out the word "cunt."
It's my favorite word.
Cunt is also my favourite word.

"Some people". lmao. Once again people pretending homophobia isn't really a thing anymore so it's okay to use gay slurs. The reason people use the word is to deride and shame people and objects by comparing them to the lowest of the lows; gays. That is the "oomph" behind the word. If you call someone that word you are saying they are no better than a gay person. That is why people use it. That does not just go away, and it doesn't evolve.

So because I have a low post count means that I'm not allowed to be offended by, or have an opinion on, what I heard on a premium stream?
I'm not going to read 21 pages of this thread, so someone answer a question for me.
Are people actually offended by what Ryan said? If so, does it generally seem like genuine outrage or sheltered pretend outrage?
@Animasta: Makes sense, have to admit I didn't browse all the pages of this thread to check the avatars or whatever. Still I think all the insincere self-absorbed outrage coming out of sheltered probably middle-class white kids is more offensive than a guy saying a very shitty word and immediately apologizing for it.
@Zero315: Nope not at all and not the point I was making.
The word used is inexcusable, but hopefully this apology is as far down the rabbit hole this incident goes. You're a stand-up guy, Ryan Davis, for giving us not just a verbal apology, but one of the most sincere written apologies I've seen in a while.

Yes it does evolve! Everything evolves.
Homophobia is a thing, but the proof is behind what Ryan did. Ryan isn't homophobic and he said it. Sure he apologized, but you have to realize that people like Ryan use the word all of the time without any malicious intent behind it.
Words catch on, like wildfire.
Remember the word "tight"? That's TIGHT.
Was it literally tight? No.
"That's cool". Was it literally frozen solid? No.
The fact is the same for this word in most cases.

At this point, it's mostly a back-and-forth between people who think the word's meaning has changed because they have never been affected by it and the people trying to convince them otherwise.

Giant Bomb has certainly been known to "work blue", but that kind of language simply has no place on Giant Bomb--and, frankly, in the world at large--not now, not ever. I was shocked myself when it came tumbling out, and instantly felt like the worst piece of shit in the world. Context is meaningless, because that word comes with too much of its own hurtful baggage to ever possibly justify.

I'm not going to try and pretend that I speak for anyone else. I'm not going to pretend like I'm the end all be all knowledgeable person in this thread. I'm just going to say that while I wasn't really offended at the time, I could see how others might have been. It takes a big person to step up and admit when they were wrong. Big respect to Ryan for admitting he fucked up.

That's Ryan's opinion on the matter and I hold nothing against him saying that.
Where was this when Vinny said "cunt"? That's as offensive as this word in question and the gang embellished it.

This. There were so many people in the chat trying to defend this kind of bullshit. Yes, hate speech is still hate speech even if it isn't directed toward a person - even out of the context of hate. The outright homophobia and casual hate in 'gaming' is baffling to me - it's a scar on our community.
Ryan is better than 99% of the people out there for apologizing and owning his mistake. Thank you for acting like an adult. You have my respect for this Ryan.
@Kingfalcon: I think it more a back and forth between people who understand the concept of respect for others and those that don't. And I always sigh when it's the latter that demand people grow up.
Oddly enough. I was watching old Giant Bomb videos earlier today and Ryan, unfortunately, used the word "tranny". To which I replied, oof. Also I have a low post count. Oh, darn!

I definitely agree. I think that's one of the challenges of having a community that, presumably, has a large contingent of teenage users and a large contingent of post-teen users. I don't think it's crossing a line to say that teens, in general, aren't as mature as adults (go figure).

Statistically speaking the majority of posters in this thread are going to be heterosexual, so I'm really not sure if it's their place to be truly offended (or to be "accepting" Ryan's apology when they aren't the target of such a word). Yes, the word can make you uncomfortable, but if you aren't a member of the oppressed group, can you really fully empathize with how slurs and hate speech feel to them?
I dunno. I think it counts if you are part of an oppressed group of any kind, because then you know what it's like. Is the N word any different than the other F word, when it comes down to it? I mean the sentiment in particular, obviously.
You're a true gentleman of tremendous class Ryan. I have nothing but respect for you and hope nothing negative comes out of this.

You are absolutely right about the evolutionary nature of language and you are probably right about the trajectory of the word in question. There will probably be a day when all hate has left it's meaning. But that is not this day. Today the word is still hateful and though Ryan he did realize that it was a word that, in this day, carries a message of hate and we should be mindful that time has not changed the meaning of that word just yet, and be sensitive to that fact.

@Animasta: The "It's just a word" people are either trolling, don't care about being insensitive or come from an environment where they have no way to contextualize why calling someone a f****t is a super shitty thing to do. Why bother trying to call them out? Are people really thinking they can lend a clue to the "It's just a word" crowd or are they making a show out of who can sigh the loudest? But yeah honestly I saw how shitty that GAF thread got and assumed this thread was way worse and just kind of posted. Whoops.
@august: Possible but people do things to make themselves feel good and publicly chastising someone on the internet for being shitty is a way to get positive attention and feel good.
@Jolt92: I am a middle-class American whitey and understand it's wrong to demean the underprivileged and persecuted class I belong to. Especially since it's clear that we as a group are generally a worldly, culturally sensitive people. Thanks for pointing out the error of my ways.
