Iv'e struggled with these questions myself so I was just wondering what some of you think.

Do you think Sony or Microsoft will revel a traditional new console this year?

What would you Like to see in the Next-Gen of Game systems?

Do you even feel the current-gen is ready for the closet yet?

Are you in a financial position to buy a $400-$600 console, $60-$65 game, and $50 for a second controller?

just curious, thanks.

@bigdc666: 1. Not at all. Maybe e3 2013.

2. Not sure what else can be done at the moment

3. No fucking way. This gen can totally keep going for the 10 year mark

4. Just as much as I was back in 2006. Also I never buy first go around on new consoles only to make sure there is no crippling flaws or having to wait for good games.

here are my answers

nope.

No texture pop-ins, 60 frames a second on AAA titles, Xbox live and PSN backwards compatible, A huge hard drive, automatic game updates, And a Red Dead Redemption sequel

I got my Xbox and PS3 on day one, and I'm still blown away by recent releases like Uncharted 3, Gears of War 3 and Battlefield 3. As long as I feel dazzled by new games I'm not in any hurry to upgrade.

Nope.

Sony I do think has come out and said there will not be a new one this year. I am sure I saw a post of them saying the PS3 had a 10 year life cycle.

I heard from a friend of a friend's illegitimate uncle that Xbox will make an announcement tomorrow.

I think it's pretty likely Microsoft will have something for us. I don't mean there's going to be like a grand unveiling of a new console complete with tech demos and whatnot, but even if it's just talk, they're going to give us something to chew on about the next generation. Will PS4 be there? Kaz Hirai straight up said it wouldn't, but then again, what's he supposed to say? "Oh yes, we'll be showing the Playstation 4 at next E3! Now go tell all your friends to buy PS3s." It wouldn't be the first time someone outright lied about showing something at E3 and I guarantee it wouldn't be the last. Having said that, I think PS4 is going to be a no-show. Sony needs to push Vita.

Aside from the obvious stuff like more RAM, faster processor, better video card, etc. I would to see complete backwards compatibility in PS4 and 360, and that includes digital titles as well. This would never happen, but I would also like for all of the consoles to have some kind of cross-platform communication and preferably cross-platform online play. It sucks we have to factor in what consoles our friends have to decide which ones we want. It would be great if we could get rid of that some time in the future.

I do not think that the current consoles are "done" quite yet, but they're getting extremely long in the tooth.

I'm currently not in a situation where I could afford a new console, but thankfully, even if one came out next week, no one has a gun to anyone's head forcing them to go out and spend their money.

I don't see Sony or Microsoft revealing anything this year. I'm taking a guess and saying new consoles are coming in 2014 from both of them.

Kas Hirai alrady said that Sony would not show a ps4 at E3 2012 (unless he is lying) so I say 2013.

To go down the list...

Not a chance in hell but I am interested as to what will be shown at E3 this year.

I would really like to see bigger, faster hard drives. At least 7200RPM as standard, or just make that aspect user upgradable, like the PS3. I would also kill for a Fraps style video recorder built in that puts the videos on your HD and can be transferred to a USB drive, as someone who enjoys making videos of games that would make it a lot easier. I think they need to make XBL and PSN a universal service too which spans both systems.

No, certainly not when you look at year we just had for games.

Unfortunately no.

1)Do you think Sony or Microsoft will revel a traditional new console this year?

2)What would you Like to see in the Next-Gen of Game systems?

3)Do you even feel the current-gen is ready for the closet yet?

4)Are you in a financial position to buy a $400-$600 console, $60-$65 game, and $50 for a second controller?

1) Possibly

2) A lesser focus on graphics and a bigger focus on gameplay. The world's best selling game, Modern Warfare 3, doesn't hold a candle to the likes of Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3 and yet sold more than both. I haven't done the math, but MW3 probably sold more than both combined. Minecraft, one of the most popular indie games if not the most popular indie game ever, initially spread through word of mouth alone and it looks like legos as rendered by the Build engine. Not that pretty games don't have their place - part of the spectacle of Crysis 2 and Dead Space 2 is the excellent graphics - but I would rather a developer put more work and budget into a better story and gameplay.

Also, fucking bring platformers back. Super Mario 64, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter - I'll pay for them!

EDIT: As well as complete backwards compatibility. None of this "HD rerelease" bullshit; complete backwards compatibility and I'll reconsider the below-mentioned gaming PC.

3) No. The Xbox 360 and PS3 are both still going strong. The current generation is still letting out multi-billion dollar games. Unless either company purposefully kills their systems, like MS did with the Xbox, then this generation won't be fully dead until at least a few years into the next. If the PS2 was any indication, Sony will keep making the PS3 until it just stops turning a profit.

4) I want a PSVita and a gaming computer next generation. I have consoles, I love my consoles, and chances are I'll pick one up late next gen. But those are the two things that I want when the next console generation settles down. Am I in a good financial position to get either? No; chances are I'll get the Vita and not the gaming computer, or the other way around.

  • No. Greater probability of Microsoft, but still no.
  • Blu-ray, proper controllers with buttons (less of that movement shit), modular (read: normal) HDDs, USB, the return of otherOS, f2p online service, extendable support for 4k and 8k (if we're looking at another 10-year life cycle), built-in capture card, return to quality games (gameplay over presentation, less iterative same-game releases re:CoD), Nintendo back on form.
  • No. This past year sucked, but I think there's still a bit of life in this gen. I still feel that the PS3 hasn't worked its hardware's potential out yet (probably due to its use of OpenGL), and people are still succeeding at pushing the limits of the Xbox. The Wii, however, is done like dinner IMO.
  • Yes, yes and yes; not willingly, though. Personal sense of value puts console value at $400, game at $50, controller at $35. Still debating whether to go exclusively PC or PC and a console. Bought most big-name releases on PC because of price and presentation.

Normal HDD's and other OS will not be happening anytime soon. Gamers fucked themselves over on that. If anything, expect consoles to get locked down even further.

If by HDD's you mean SSD's. There's no way next gen systems won't ship with solid state drives.

Or, as some have suggested before, a greater change: revert back to cartridges with games shipped on flash drives.

I am talking any kind of R/W drive. They will have an HDD or an SSD for sure but they will be proprietary because of all the spoiled linux kids that just want to run homebrew.

: Yeah, I know. It's what I'd like to see, not what's going to happen.

EDIT: Yeah, homebrewers act like jackasses to get what they want. I'm not sure if they realise that they encourage these lockdowns.

: At this point, I can't pass a judgment on that. SSDs need to become significantly cheaper still. I foresee another generation of spinning HDDs, maybe then, we'll see SSDs.

  1. I doubt it. Their systems still have plenty of life left in them, and I think that it is too early to announce a new one, even with the Wii U coming soon.
  2. We'll obviously get better graphics, but other than that, I can't say there is much more I really want to see right now.
  3. Except for the Wii, nope. There are still some great games being released, and there is no reason to rush to the next generation.
  4. Yes, but I still spend my money carefully. Gaming is an expensive habit if you don't spend carefully.

1. The new consoles will not be revealed this year, both Sony and Microsoft are selling quite a few consoles. I'd expect a Mid '13 reveal for both consoles with a mid to late '14 release.

2. Better graphics, Cloud storage, DVR and other Smart TV capabilities. More and more games will be released digitally, but most games will still be available on disc.

3. No, great games are still being released, and there has been nothing on the PC or otherwise that has wowed me and left me wanting for more power. I think it'll be tough to sell me a new console on power alone. I'll stick with my 360 for a few more years.

4. No, I probably won't buy a new console at launch, and I hardly ever buy games when they first come out. I think $60 is a little ridiculous as is. I'll wait until there's a game I absolutely must play to get one.

1. Yes, I think Microsoft will be showing a new console, and Playstation may as well.

2. I'd like to see better graphics, and the traditional controllers we're all used to. Other than that, I'll leave the rest up to them.

3. I wouldn't say the current gen is "ready for the closet", but I do think they've been somewhat stuck in a rut for a few years now when it comes to hardware capabilities, and to push what developers will want further, they're going to need new consoles.

4. I'm not personally, but my brother will probably pick them up somewhere around the time they come out, so I'll be able to enjoy them regardless.

  1. Microsoft will, yes.
  2. Better graphics. That's it. I'm not talking about 1080p and 60fps, either, because that means fuck all. I want as big a graphical leap as the past consoles have been.
  3. Yes, I haven't touched my PS3 or Xbox for about a year.
  4. Yes, I'd buy it, definitely.
