All online games are still available with +1 more person than you need to have a game at any time of the day with full servers. No subscription services are available. The great EMP blast of 11/19/2021 knocked all available games offline so no previously owned collections exist. PCs are not an option after the great META corp went offline and took all gaming rigs down with them.
Nursing home you (50 years from now) runs the rec room. Budget for 1 console and 5 games pre-today 2021. You buy?
Nintendo Switch with:
- Minecraft
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Splatoon 2
- Mario Kart 8 (I'm not that fond of it, but you need a racing game)
- Either Taiko no Tatsujin or Superbeat: Xonic (I need a rhythm game in my life)
I'm trying to think of games which can be played endlessly. If the premise is this is a temporary situation and after a year or two the nursing home will have access to new consoles/games again, then the list would be very different.
Well, I will be 102 years old, so I wonder if I will be able to see anything, move my finger dexterously enough to play, or know what is going on?
@monkeyking1969: Exactly. I’m like, “Shit, I made it to 93? Forget the nursing home, the most I can hope for is getting to choose which flavor of Soylent they’ll grind me in to.”
Don’t make me choose because the other olds aren’t going to love playing Yakuza Zero, Kiwami 2, Like a Dragon, and both Judgement games until they die.
@inspectorfowler: I was thinking to myself: "Why would they put a guy that's been dead for 10 years in charge of a rec room?"
I would get the 60gb launch PS3 with hardware backwards compatibility with ps2 and ps1.
1. Final Fantasy 7
2. Parasite Eve
3. MGS2
4. MGS4
5. GTA: SA or VC depending on a coin flip because those games are the same game in my mind. Similar time period, similar themes ,great music etc… and I have no preference in the East Coast vs West Coast game.
@monkeyking1969: Actually, they have a lot of people over 100 in nursing homes.
1. Mario Maker 2. Keep the brain occupied with high challenge and also creativity.
2. Some kind of MMO. Maybe EVE. Have to have some social interaction.
3. NYT crossword app. New content every day, never gets old.
4. Smash. It's a good game in-between other games.
5. Persona 5. Didn't get very far, but I enjoyed what I played and I hear it's very, very long. Plus it doesn't rely too much on reflexes for the most part, which may be a bit dulled.
But in reality, man, this question is depressing. I'd much rather be surrounded by loved ones and maybe a nice library of books. And a cat.
@sethmode: Staffing shortages. You’ll get a 3% discount for coming out of retirement to work at your own nursing home.
@wollywoo: Homework was for 1 console. 1/2 credit.
@sometingbanuble: Apparently, reading is not my strong suit.
@inspectorfowler: I'd laugh at this if I didn't think it was definitely possible in the US.
It's important that there's a limitation on the number of games so they can have a sense of community having played the same games. I would say get a PS2 and get everybody their own memory card so there's no static there. 5 games:
- GTA Vice City
- Twisted Metal Black
- Burnout 3
- Final Fantasy 7
- Tekken 3
