A friend and I were discussing Video games. We ran across the question " How many RPGs are made in Japan? (excluding JRPG)"
Try to name them.

My definition of JRPG = Turnbased RPG originating from  Japan. Making JRPG describe the gameplay. Not it's location of development.

Non-turn based RPGs from Japan? Very few I would imagine.

What about Non-turn-based Final Fantasies? Are Western turn-based RPGs JRPGs? Why not just ask how many real-time RPGs are there developed in Japan, if that's what you're actually asking...?

Ok, but it is still a JRPG. Pretty much anything made by square is a JRPG.

So from now on you have to say the country of origin before every genre you describe.

From now on...you need to be clearer about what you are looking for. The term JRPG is about common themes of aesthetics, character, and story. Action RPG means a non-turn-based RPG.

JRPG is a silly term, but regardless of how silly the term is, it still means Japanese Role Playing Game.

Personally, I'm waiting for EBFPS (Eastern Bloc First Person Shooter) to be a thing.

I always make the distinction between JRPG and WRPG just on where it's made.

Which is why Demon's Souls is a JRPG to me. Hopefully it catches on...

The design choices, even though it isn't turn-based, inherently makes it feel like a Japanese game, much like Kingdom Hearts.

Good examples of more action focus JRPGs are some of the more Symphony of the Night style Castlevania games, the Tales series, and Kingdom Hearts. Just off the top of my head.

I like how Kingdom Hearts is considered JRPG. When the game is littered with Disney Characters.

Yes, and the most important element of all of those is the character's hair. If somebody has spiky coloured hair that defies gravity, you are probably playing a JRPG.

The series is developed by the Japanese company Square-Enix. It is littered with tons of Final Fantasy characters. It also shares a lot of themes of aesthetics, character, and story as other JRPGs produced by SE.

I always thought the Simpson kids just had really deformed skulls. Everyone else has clearly defined hair, why don't they?
