A friend and I were discussing Video games. We ran across the question " How many RPGs are made in Japan? (excluding JRPG)"
Try to name them.
My definition of JRPG = Turnbased RPG originating from Japan. Making JRPG describe the gameplay. Not it's location of development.
Off the top of your head.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
" JRPG gameplay is turn based like Final Fantasy. "What about Non-turn-based Final Fantasies? Are Western turn-based RPGs JRPGs? Why not just ask how many real-time RPGs are there developed in Japan, if that's what you're actually asking...?
" @RobotHamster said:Well...you see...the thing is that Rez is actually...a JRTS..." Every game in Japan is a jrpg. "What about...Rez? "
" @nintendoeats said:Japanese Rave-Trance Shooter?" @RobotHamster said:Well...you see...the thing is that Rez is actually...a JRTS... "" Every game in Japan is a jrpg. "What about...Rez? "

" @nintendoeats said:From now on...you need to be clearer about what you are looking for. The term JRPG is about common themes of aesthetics, character, and story. Personally, I'm waiting for EBFPS (Eastern Bloc First Person Shooter) to be a thing.

I always make the distinction between JRPG and WRPG just on where it's made.
Which is why Demon's Souls is a JRPG to me. Hopefully it catches on...
The design choices, even though it isn't turn-based, inherently makes it feel like a Japanese game, much like Kingdom Hearts.
Good examples of more action focus JRPGs are some of the more Symphony of the Night style Castlevania games, the Tales series, and Kingdom Hearts. Just off the top of my head.
" I like how Kingdom Hearts is considered JRPG. When the game is littered with Disney Characters. "LOOK AT THE MAIN CHARACTER'S HAIR.
" @nintendoeats said:Yes, and the most important element of all of those is the character's hair. If somebody has spiky coloured hair that defies gravity, you are probably playing a JRPG."The term JRPG is about common themes of aesthetics, character, and story " is what you said "" @pallorwag said:
