Whats the biggest/crazist plot twist of the generation? While any of the thousand plot twists of VLR would easily win this in a second, the dragon's dogma plot twist is totally the most mindfucking thing ever since star ocean 3.

Call of Duty Black Ops

As much as I dislike what CoD has become since MW2, I really, honestly were surprised and overwhelmed by the way that one game did the story. That was a good freaking story. Reznov was just owning the screen, I loved every moment of him.

No, they couldn't. That shit's Vita/3DS territory, son. Don't you dare try to bring 999 into this.

Frog Fractions...

Let's just end the thread here.

In all seriousness though, there's some great ones from this gen. We all know the Bioshock twist, but the one in Modern Warfare 2 when Shepherd shoots you and then Ghost. That was such a shock to me. Such a sucker punch. I think that's an underrated one but one I always remember.

EDIT: Also Assassins Creed 3 has such a great twist.

Out of what I played? "Would you kindly?" would probably take it.

Although the end of Assassins Creed II was pretty wtf inducing as well. I don't know if that was really a twist, though, so much as just a mind-f*ck.

I think the twist in Bioshock was one of the most surprising moments in video games I've ever played. It's a shame that the game lost almost all of its steam after that reveal though, but DAMN was it fantastic leading up to it.

Mass Effect is probably better for "oh shit" moments in the series' plot more than actual plot twists, I guess, but I was a pretty big fan of "Sovereign is a Reaper" in Mass Effect 1.

AC2 comes to mind. I'm not a really big fan of the "twist" though. They rarely work.

Nier is a good one.

EVERYONE IS REPLICANTS AND THE REAL HUMANS ARE THE SHADES

I also really liked Zeno Clash 2's twist, talking about games this year

the zeno's are actually cordoned off into their own little world by the civilized world that happens to be Chile, whilst the Golems are there to protect the civilized world and make sure no Zenos leave.

This was the twist of the generation. So well done. Didn't feel cheap.

I also really liked Crackdown's in a very cheesy way. Yes it's bad, but now "SKILLS FOR KILLS AGENT" seems so sinister.

"Would you kindly" was a great one. VLR and/or 999's big reveals were fucking fantastic too. More recently, in Dual Destinies Fulbright being the primary antagonist was pretty good too. I really love plot twists. That "OH SHIT!" moment gets me every time

Yeah, this one, with the reason as to why it happened. Was the most sorrowful plot twist this generation to me.

Special mentions also to Silent Hill: Downpour and Nier.

  1. Then this generation is three years old.
  2. Also, that only amounts to 2 years of decent games.

I think Assassin's Creed and its sequel both had big plot twists, with the sequel being a much bigger deal. Sure, the whole present-day-sci-fi thing wasn't known until the release of the game, so that was more of a "we're withholding information from you during the course of our PR leading to release," but it was still pretty major. However, nothing compares to the revelations at the end of AC2.

"York is Zach" was a pretty damn good plot twist, and it was well-deserved and well-earned.

Bioshock's plot twist was great, but it felt convoluted to me. Then again, I have my issues with that game overall and have been a strong supporter of Bioshock 2 as a stronger game for a while.

However, I'm surprised that there are two games which NO ONE has mentioned so far: Braid and Fez.

Honestly, Braid's plot twist was FUCKING PHENOMENAL. It was not only well-deserved and well-earned, but it made me question everything I knew about video games. It made me look at Super Mario Bros. in a different way. It made me look at Donkey Kong in a different way. It was just too goddamn incredible.

Meanwhile, Fez was plot twist after plot twist, realization after realization. The moment that you end up coming upon the knowledge that EVERYTHING IN THE GAME MATTERS, that there is an entire language, that the Tetris symbols are actually button commands... It's just too fucking incredible. It shows the dedication and love that Phil Fish had for that game.

So I would say it's a tie for me between Braid and Fez.

I would also like to throw out an honorable mention for Bastion. That game's plot twist was magnificent as well.

Mass Effect Reapers.

That scene where Sovereign explains he is reaper, the way he is talking down to Shepard and the crew because he believes them to be inferior is amazing. Then finding out the citadel is a Relay everything about that games story is awesome.

Alright stay with me guys. The Conduit 2 on Wii where Lincoln Force shows up as part of the coalition of dead presidents who have gathered to save the world.

This has to be the plot twist of the generation cause nobody saw it coming because nobody played this game.

Metal Gear Solid 4, Shadow Moses. A lot of that is how much age has aged, and all the little easter eggs and listening to snake go "Sigh, just like old times." And really that point where Otacon goes "Hey remember when we used to have to use Keycards?" and then snake's stamina drops and I feel the same way.

I liked that part too but I don't remember it being a plot twist.

If you count it as not a singular moment, but the entire game, I'd definitely have to go with Spec Ops: The Line.

Maybe Portal.

Bioshock would've been a surprise, but I got to it later than most people and already knew what I was getting into. Infinite was predictable because of it's poor pacing.

I think the thing that shocked me the most was Tales of Xillia. Which is weird, 'cause jrpgs tend to be a bit more predictable or completely nonsensical. I guess the combination of my choice to play Jude and the fact that, when I play a Tales game I'm there for the combat and not the story, the part where they activated the Lance of Kresnik really caught me off guard. All of the "twists" after that, though, had me rolling my eyes.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Dragon's Dogma too, though I think that was a little more nonsensical than Xillia

The first BioShock. Handily. It came from nowhere, was executed powerfully, and has become prolific in the industry and culture. Everybody who knows games knows "would you kindly?"

And normally I fucking hate twists. Most of the time they're a cheap tactic used to draw an audience to a narrative that otherwise cannot stand on its own.

Sterling gave AC2 a 4.5 which is overly generous in my opinion.
