These 2 games had huge ad campaigns & were system sellers for the PS2.

I haven't heard anyone talk about them in a decade.

Never heard of them, but they didn't seemso great at Metacritic. Not that bad, mind you, but those are not the scores of games that get remembered.

OK, quick hint: I've seen you post three threads in one day. This one and one other weren't bad threads (the first was of a subject already covered), but they could use a good bit more thought and detail in order to better encourage discussion.

Those aren't popular games. They sound like things I'd blog about.

Was Maximo popular? It got a sequel...and is one of the best games ever. So I'll say Maximo.

Dynamix's Betrayal at Krondor felt like it was huge entry in the PC RPG genre back in the 90s, now I seem to be one of the few people who remember it. If only Sierra had kept the license, it might have gotten enough sequels to make a real long term impact.

IMO guitar hero. Those games were coming out so much like 3 games a year at its height and then BOOM...no more. It's weird how the last one was less than 2 years ago and there is no signs at all of that genre or game coming back.

@Dagbiker: Fuck yes, that game was amazing. I'd also like to throw in Ogre Battle 64.

The Legacy of Kain games.

Soul Reaver was huge.

Also, anyone remember the Army Men games? They made about a billion of those.

Bouncer and Fantavision were popular? Man I thought both were considered garbage when released.

I thought Bouncer was crushingly easy and very short. High replayability though. Interesting brawler experiment. But nothing special.

I rented fantavision once, it was fun for about 15 minutes.

King's Quest has a fairly rabid core fanbase that's still alive and kicking somewhere, but you sure as hell don't hear much about the series for the most part. Looking forward to seeing if Telltale will make that their next project after finishing up Walking Dead. Seems like ages ago they announced it, and we haven't had any solid information since.

Eh, Planescape actually sold poorly when it came out. Wouldn't say it's faded from memory though, as it constantly appears on "best RPG" lists from people who actually care about those kinds of games. Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and their respective sequels all did well, and the only reason there hasn't been any sort of modern D&D game since that NWN 2 expansion is because 4th edition is crap.

Legacy of Kain got screwed over hard. Defiance set the series up for one huge ass conclusion that never came. Instead, the team had to make a couple of those really bad Blood Omen games because this was around the time shareholders started going "WHAT WILL SELL REALLY WELL" and, after they bombed hard, the entire series was declared dead. It doesn't help that the main villain of the series was voiced by Tony Jay, who died around the same time.

Bouncer was such a play-an-forget that I actually at some point recently thought it was an early 360 game because I couldn't place it.

I remember The Bouncer being terrible and a launch-game so a lot more people played it than they should have.

Others have given good answers so far. Oddworld, Army Men, and Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver. To add to that, I would say James Bond games, Armored Core, Freedom Fighters, Virtua Fighter, and Syphon Filter. A lot of stuff between the PS1/N64 and PS2/XBOX era. Not to say sequels don't pop up but none of them have been much in the minds of gamers like they used to.

The only reason The Bouncer might have been popular (not really) was because it was one of the first -- if not the first -- Squaresoft game for the PS2.

Killer Instinct was big in the arcades and on SNES, but after the N64 game came out, no one but the Rare diehards ever seem to bring it up.

The Masters of Orion games were pretty huge back in the day but seem fairly obscure now.

@ArbitraryWater: true i was rethinking this subject and trying to think of a game franchises that have faded but were popular at the time they were released and i think i found a good one viewtiful Joe i remember hearing they did well in reviews also and according to the wikipedia page they sold very well considering how much the game cost to make maybe its due to clover shutting down and becoming platinum games but then again capcom owns the rights to that franchise probably just not enough interest
