I have a slim. It isn't backward compatible. I don't know for certain if there's a version of the slimline that is.

Edit: I just checked. SethPhotopoulus is right. They aren't backward compatible.

Isn't the first release PS3s (not the slims) the only ones that were backwards compatible (40 or 60gig PS3s)? I could be wrong so, correct me if I'm wrong...

The originals were the only ones.

I think only the 40 and 80 gigs phats were/are compatible .... at least the 80 gig phats are , mine is :) , but it was only for a time ;  a cousin of mine also got his 80 gig phat and lo behold no longer backwards compatible (he bought it around 7-8 months later than I did )

They had to cut $$ out of that system somewhere to get more people to buy it.

All PS3's can play Playstation 1 games.

Launch PS3's can play Playstation 2 games.

At this point I really don't care about playing PS2 games on my PS3 even though I haven an original 60GB. The emulation method causes lag and those old games looks like junk upscaled on my LCD. PS2 emulation on the PC has come a long way anyway and will net you much better results visually. Even if it's not 100% accurate just yet.

They are backwards compatible with PS1 games, but not PS2 games. Only launch model PS3s are Backwards Compatible with PS2 games.

The original 20GB and 60GB launch models use hardware emulation and are the best. The first revision 80GB models also had PS2 emulation, but it was a split software/hardware emulation, and from what I have heard it is fairly poor. The launch models had both the CPU and the GPU from the PS2, while the 80GB version had one, but not the other, though I can't remember which they removed. All models after that, including all PS3 Slim models, have no PS2 emulation.
