Okay, so I never played either games ('cause back in home country we didn't have consoles known as the Playstation, we had the Dendy (a complete rip-off of the NES)

So thanks to the magic of the PSOne Classics, I decided to purchase one of the two games first. I don't care about buying both at once, since I will not play them at the same time, nor do I have enough points to buy it (and I just got a 20 dollar PSN card for free, so I don't want to bother with anything else) (oh and I know they are both 10%, but then there is tax)

So yea, I heard that they are both really good, but What should I buy first?
Thanks!

PS: Any news on PS2Classics any time soon (I want to replay FF10 and FF10-2)

EDIT: not sure why there is a link to wikipedia in the title >.<

Buy seven first. There is really not much to compare them against since they are very different games in terms of story and focus. FF8 is a love story, FF7 is a sprawling save the world story.

Hope you enjoy them :-D

I suggest getting FF7. Most people prefer FF7 and there are A LOT of problems with FF8.

if you have an HDTV, it will look pretty bad for FF 7.... I don't have FF 8 yet but it's probably the same. I used to play both on the Playstation one, so crappy graphics I can kind of deal with

I enjoyed 8 more then 7. I bought 8 off PSN and I'm finding that I dont have the patience to use the junctioning system again.

I'm waiting for 9.

Seven, but don't expect to like it.

If you find you cannot get into VII, don't let that hinder yo getting VIII.

Final Fantasy VIII has Always been My personal favorite of the series. I also still play every couple of years, while I haven't really gona past the first part (Midgar) of Final Fantasy VII in the last 6-8 years or so. Both are great though, try them both out for a couple of hours and see which flavour you preffer. Both have very different feels and settings.

You could always make one. IGN just did a feature where they ranked all the games in the FF series, maybe there was a thread about it where shit could be stirred up.

I say eff both games and get FF6. The Final Fantasy Anthology Package on Amazon.com is about 17 bones, and you can play it on your PS3.

Even though I say this...I find it hard to fathom anyone younger than me actually enjoying FF6/7/8/9 if playing them for the first time. There won't be any surprises, the battle systems are archaic and they're madd long. Certainly do hope you enjoy them, though.

If you're intent on playing both I suggest playing VII first just because it looks quite a bit worse, it might be hard to play VIII and then go back to VII's graphics. Other than that I think VII is the superior game, it's also a bit more of casual experience if you don't really feel like messing with all the junction crap that was in VIII.

@essaregee:  If you want playability that is more near to today's standard's, then you'd be better off getting FF8.
I mean I've completed all the the FF's after FF7, enjoying every one of these games, and I've tried to play FF7 numerous times only to find that I'm so used to beautiful graphic's, great more matured gameplay and better by far ingame mechanic's that FF7 is archaic and almost unplayable by today's standard's.

People may dispute me because they have great nostalgic memories for FF7. But let's be realistic, which game is a younger gamer going to play purely from an ingame look's and game mechanic's point of view? FF13 or FF7?

FF13 every single time. I bring up FF13 because it proves my point that in this industry, more recent tend's to mean better. Tend's to.

Well since I've been playing through the two in my free time I suggest 8 first. You don't have to really mess with junctioning if you don't want to. I've got Squall with a strength of 102 while the rest of his stats are in the 20s; with nothing junctioned I may add. Seems like 8 is more fun throughout while 7 shines when you have all weapons, lvl 99, etc. Though that could be the hundreds of hours playing 7 at said point, while I was a kid.

I definitely prefer 7 I am about 6 hours into 8 and hate the junction system, FF7 battle system trumps it in every way, also the story is not grabbing me as much, however 8 looks better

I'd buy both. In fact, I just did the other day. Picked up Final Fantasy VII -IX. The thing is though that I bought them for the PS1, not PSN.
Won't be playing them for a while though.

I remember really liking Final Fantasy VIII, but I'm not sure I could go back and play it now. The junctioning system was a hassle, especially when it was basically necessary for both characters and summons.

On the other hand, I could never get into VII. Everyone liked VII. I didn't like VII. Just a different vibe. Though it's probably worth noting that I had played VIII first, had really loved the tone and gravity of that game, and couldn't stomach the almost childish vibes VII gave off.

I'm actually having a really hard time picking which one. You really should play both because they are so different. Maybe just start with 7? I love 8 just as much though. Damn lol.

Dude, the FF8 story is very down to Earth, where-as the FF7 story deals with very outer-worldly issues; as well as personal stuff that might draw you in. It all depends on what you want to play.

FF8 is a love/conflict driven story.

FF7 is a very materialistic, supernatural story.

It's all up to you man, it's the version of the story that you want to play.

However, I bought Final Fantasy Tactics first. :P A very medieval story, based upon betrayal and loyalty.

Make your decision based off of what you love, not what you want to play.

I was going to recommend 8, simply because most people have played 7 a lot more..

But if you've never played either, then I'd definitely recommend 7 a lot.  Without trying to sound like a huge fanboy, it's still one of the best games ever made, despite the rather spotty translation and horribly aged graphics, I don't think any of the actual game feels particularly dated.  Bare in mind I played it way back when it was first released, so I may be seeing things through my nostalgia glasses.  Regardless, it's a classic you definitely should experience.

FF8 has a lot of haters, and it's devoted fanboys too.  It's definitely not as good an experience as 7, they made same rather puzzling choices with the characters/story.  But the gameplay definitely holds up a little more well here, it's clear they learned a lot from developing 7 and there's a lot of really epic moments, and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of newcommers liked it more.

Good post, but, seriously, Do NOT buy Final Fantasy Tactics from the PS1 classic section, the legit PSP version is far superior thanks to a million times better translation.

Anyway, just get both if you want em, they are what 6 bucks a piece. Not a whole lot.

Same.  The graphics style, both in cutscenes, in game and in battle, and setting just appealed so much more to my aesthetic.  8 has a more expansive style of while 7 has a more expanded gameworld.

FFVIII's storyline is a jumbled mess, and the characters don't really grow beyond their architypes.  The plot felt like it was being made up as it went along, and the romantic plot thread was pretty much the only memorable thing about it in the long run.  Outside of whether or not you like the junction system (which seems pretty arbitrary if you ask me), there's not a whole lot to make this game stand out, outside of the "hurfdurf time compression" story and the romance novel lovethread.

FFVII, while by todays standards seems far less special, influenced pretty much every jRPG after it.  What it does, it does well.  It's dated looking, and the combat was pretty simple, but to say that it sucks just because it's old or overrated is pretty innaccurate.  You gotta respect it as a piece of history, if nothing else.  You don't go back and watch The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly and say "ugh this sucks, Tombstone was way better looking".
