I currently have a Logitech X-540 5.1 speaker set for my PC and have been using it for well over 10 years. I am starting to get a lot of unwanted noise/interference through my speakers and I think it is time to move on to something a little newer.

Can anyone suggest a good 5.1 speaker system to pair with my SoundBlaster AE-5 card? My preference is something with relatively compact speakers, and I don't need anything extremely loud for my small office, but I would like to be able to put front speakers on my desk and mount the rear speakers on my back wall.

Does anyone have a 5.1 system that you would recommend?

Honestly, if you need 5.1 sound, I think headphones with surround-sound compatibility are probably better and cheaper than a good 5.1 speaker setup. I say ss headphones for your 5.1, and two good monitors (or good 2.1 setup) for your actual speakers is the way to go.

I do have a decent pair of headphones, but I don't really like wearing them. Most of the time I just want to sit down and play without having to put headphones on.

I used the logitech Z906's for a lot of years before recently switching to expensive headphones, unless you are an audiophile they where really good. Mid range was a bit iffy but otherwise I used them for home theatre speakers as well as pc stuff.

That seems to be the most reasonable option, short of buying a 5.1 home theater system that takes an optical input (since my sound card doesn't have RCA out, my only options are 3x3.5mm or optical).

Hopefully a new system will resolve the electrical interference that I am suddenly experiencing. Just flipping the light switch on or off creates an audible hum through my subwoofer.
