This is a sad day indeed I remember reading this publication for 7 years. I cant believe it is gone good luck to all of those that still worked there. When are things gonna get better?
Salute: 1UP Acquired By UGO, Downsized; EGM Shuttered
I guess I'm joining some of the other folks on here who are moving over to Giant Bomb as their main gaming news and community source. I'd spent a lot of time in there, posted a bunch of blogs, and made some friends. Even though I knew it was some corporate thing, the folks there had made it something personal and real.
Yeah this sucks! The 1UP crew will be missed! It is hard to stomach the demise of EGM. Rebel and do your own thing. It will be better than anything UGO is going to do. I might not be the biggest poster in the land, but I do have my favorite sites. I'm getting sick and tired of seeing my industry faves get the shaft. I don't get it, why in gods name would you can individuals who breath life in to something. I can't stand Gamespot anymore because of this same crap, but wait , I'm posting on one of the best gaming sites on the net because upper echelon BS firings. I guess that is the difference between gamers and businessmen. They have no clue what the gaming culture wants or needs. I hope that the crew who leaves 1UP will go on to do great things for game journalism and gamers alike. I hope the best for everyone. Peace!
this makes me raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaage
I'm hoping some of the newly unemployed go the Giant Bomb route and start something uniquely their own.
All my favorite writers left GameSpot, now EGM and the entire 1Up network are basically dead.
I swear to God, if GiantBomb weren't around, I wouldn't read reviews any more.
Even though I havent read EGM in a long while...I have such fond memories from when I was a kid and sittin on the shitter reading EGM. Good times indeed.
What terrible news! along with Giant Bomb 1up was my favorite games website, their podcasts were fucking awesome! im seriously fucking crying!!!
my suggested scandal-label: The 1up holocaust
This is a bad day for videogaming community on the Web.
RIP EGM. Sorry to all of those that lost their jobs. Now Giantbomb has to come and fill the void now.
I actually really enjoyed the commentary on the podcast you guys were on and, ironically subscribed to the last one. I hope other companies have the sense to hire those talented people. I hope you guys are doing okay, it would break my heart to see you guys run out of money when you just barely got started.
This is sad.
But I am convinced that 1UP will not get the traffic they're used to. The gaming crowd reads the interwebs, and this is no good publiciity.
At least I just erased allmy Bookmarks.
I sincerely hope the guys that got laid off start a new project I can support.
i'm really into reading up on GiantBomb and used to only read Gamespot so i am not too fond of 1up, but i know what it feels like to have your videogame webhome wrecked. Condolences to the fans.
I started reading EGM when I was seven years old. I didn't exactly read it religiously, but the closure of something I'd held in my hands at both 7 and 23 is utterly bizarre. It was pretty clear that the end was coming, but the acquisition/bloodbath was a sad, dramatic conclusion.
The podcasts were what made me visit 1up regularly, and even though veritable game journalism gods Jeff Green and Shawn Elliott left for greener pastures, 1up was still a unique, vibrant site. "Was" being the operative word, there.
Wow hurts ive been friends with Shu for a long time im so sorry bro but now 1up Shane, Ryan, Matt, Nick, Justin hell all of you got fucked im so disgusted by corporate forceouts it makes me ill shit just wait everyones gonna come to GB and it will be huge....... na probably not, but i wish the best of luck ill burn one in honor considering i dont drink.
Well F*CK
F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK F*CK
... I know, I know. All good things must come to an end, even though all of us never want things to change. And when it does change, it's almost never the way we want it to, so we're all dragged kicking and screaming back to reality.
The only thing I want now is to still be able to hear from them in one media or another, because I respected their insight even through the (what "I" relatively found) asinine and disagreeable.
Along with the goofiness of the Giantbomb crew (and a lot of ex-Gamespotters, you know who you all are), these guys shaped the landscape of videogame editorial that I kept up with. The diversity and depth is what made me fall in love with all this in the first place.
Goodnight everyone, and may you find hope in an uncertain future.
Fuck man!!!!!! This pissed me off!!!! 1up Yours was my good friday thing! No matter what my day would be like, I could always count on 1up Yours!!!!
And the 1up Show was damn fun to watch at work, or on the metro!!!!!!
And all those people gone now! Shane, Anthony, Milky, Skip!!!!
I feel like drying guys! Call me emotional, but this is horrible, is like I've been stabbed from the back!
Business is Business..............................but it doesn't mean we have to like it >:[
Well, I also just became a member of GiantBomb. Because I was recommended that if I would miss 1up, to take refuge in here.
I hope this place can heal this horrible wounds.
This year starts bad, terribly.
Man, this just pisses me off. 1up really did have an amazing group of brilliant minded folks. Both 1upFM and 1up Yours were constant intellectually stimulating gaming conversations. My initial reaction is that eventually people will get annoyed enough at UGO, IGN, and Gamespot and all end up on Giant Bomb, but then all those people will be out of work. We can't win!
Sad, sad day. Some of the names on that list of rumored layoffs have nearly the weight of Gerstmann-gate in my mind. Shane Bettenhausen, Nick Suttner, Matt Chandronait...it's just nuts that these guys got layed off.
