What sequels do you think got it right, in terms of improving on the previous game's flaws?

The big one for me is Assassin's Creed 2. The first one was okay, but repetitive. Assassin's Creed 2 kept everything that was great about the first game while adding a crapload of content to make the sequel one of the best games I've ever played.

Assassin's Creed 2 is definitely up there for the best improved game/

Mass Effect 2 got the combat done right and removed the horrid Mako (admittedly I'd rather have them redesign it than completely removing it) and the overall experience is solid, though the same cannot be said about the story, theme and the universe they live in.

I never played Uncharted but its sequel got a shit load of praise, just like AC2 did.

Definitely Mass Effect 2. Everything that was a problem in the original, Bioware simply eliminated.

ME2 combat felt way better than ME1 imo.
SC2 is also fantastic. The first game wasn't exactly lacking to begin with, but they certainly didn't mess things up with the sequel.

Assassin's Creed is a big one for me, too.  That series gets better with every installment.  Uncharted 2 was really good, too.  They took a lot of criticisms of the first game and fixed them for the second.

It is actually more common for games sequels to be better than their originals. Not saying they are all this way but generally in games the development learns over the course of development so in making a sequel to a good game the sequel tends to be better. Again there are instances where this didn't happen but it's more common in games, than say ... movies.

To keep in topic I could list way too many sequels that were improvements but more recent examples would be Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2, and Assassin's Creed BrotherHood to name a few. =)

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009) to me improved over what Uncharted: Drake's Fortune did when it came out in 2006 and got it right on how awesome and epic the games could be.

Baldur's Gate 2 destroys the original.

I'll second the AC2 and ME2 notices (never played the first Uncharted so I can't verify that).

  • Samurai Shodown II. It realized what was wrong with the original game and fixed the hell out of it.
  • Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu. Fuck. Yes.
  • A bunch of others that I can't be bothered to name.

Mass effect 2 and Assassins Creed 2 are two pretty big ones. Tempted to say Starcraft 2 but I can see some people seeing that as a very similar game to the first. Really isn't though.

Mass effect 2 is a major one in terms of being way more fun then mass effect 1. I love mass effect 1 but it can get boring at times because I feel that the setting was more of a focus then the gameplay.

Mass Effect 2, Pokemon Gold & Silver and Assassins Creed 2.

I thought Uncharted 2 was pretty amazing, but so was the first.  These are games I feel took things they learned after the original games, and massively improved upon them.

Resident Evil 4, Jak 2 and Uncharted 2 are the best sequals in my mind.

Jak 2 and RE4  are radically diffrent from there predecessors so they might not count, but I was surprised how much better Uncharted 2 was. The platformering and adventureing where infinitely better than the first, and the shooting was actually fun.  The first game just fells rush in comparison.  I think  the buliding of  the game engine and all the R&D just took its toll on the developers, once all of that was out of the way they could just focus on making a great game.

Red Dead Redemption became the game everyone wanted Red Dead Revolver to be.
I think it tops the list.

I was a huge fan of Red Dead Revolver when it came out, but it was not what I expected, or wanted it to be.
Red Dead Redemption was that game.

Just Cause 2. The first game was flawed but entertaining. The second, thanks to a significant improvement in the grapple mechanic, was more fun than a barrel full of monkeys.

@pwnasaurus: I think there are enough other topics discussing ME, if you really want to get into it.  Probably best not to derail this thread.
But several of the features in ME1 were redundant to the point where they were detrimental to the game, such as the inventory..  Removing them only made the game better, as they didn't add anything in the first place.

It might have been nice if they could have found a way to make them work, but ultimately, they were unnecessary.

Would love to say Mass Effect 2 was. But it wasn't. From the shooting perspective, it was great. The story took a HUGE hit. It wasn't nearly as involved.

Seriously. RDR was such a massive leap in quality from the quality.

Also, Uncharted 2, System Shock 2, Assassin's Creed 2, probably some others that I'm forgetting.

There was no refining that inventory system. Getting rid of it altogether is the very definition of addition by subtraction.

Agreed, they made the combat 'better' (though personally I disliked the change away from RPG standards, but it was a lot smoother, still would have liked more stats in combat....it's a goddamn RPG afterall) but butchered almost everything else. Which is not to say it was a bad game, just after the promise and polish of Mass Effect it felt like they dropped the ball.

I completely agree with this. Also DKC2. People who aren't familiar with it (Bombcast crew for instance) might give it shit for doing things like removing DK as a playable character or having a really bad subtitle, but seriously, DKC2 is the pinnacle of platformers. They eliminated all the flaws from DKC, and made a lot of good decisions that made the game tons of fun, such as having transformation barrels that allowed stages to be designed for Animal Buddies only, making hidden collectibles contribute to the unlocking of levels in a Lost Word, having there just be one oh so valuable DK Coin in every level merely for prestige, removing DK (Who was only situationally better than Diddy) and putting in Dixie (Whose ability to float makes her useful in a wider variety of situations), and of course having all the Kremlings dress up as pirates.

Also I'd say Mass Effect 2 and the Assassin's Creed series in general. Also, Paper Mario Thousand Year Door. Can't forget that one.
