Let's consider these two games.

On game A you cut people with a chainsaw, the depiction is quite graphical, the person suffers and dies, if everyone did that humanity would probably go extinct, and it (sawing people) is a forbidden activity, in principle nobody should do that ever.

On game B you have sex with people, the depiction is quite graphical, the person enjoys it, if nobody did that humanity would probably go extinct, and it (sex) is restricted to ages and circumstances (mutual consent).

So the question in the pool can be read as: for which game should the public opinion be more concerned and have a more restrictive age label and regulation?

I have my theory.

Violence is presented everywhere, and is natural to be exposed to a form or other of violence, so i find people come to accept it as part of their lives.

Sexuality on the other hand is treated with secrecy, so traversing on the subject is considered a BIG DEAL, and capable of corrupting feeble minds, especially in works of the Devil like... video games.

Violence is worse, however I don't have a problem with either in games. Sex is good both in and out of games though.

@Jeust: That makes sense, but for that to hold people should be incapable of any critical thinking that would stop that circle, that goes as taboo -> no depiction -> taboo -> ...

As in the same there are different degrees of violent content, there are also different degrees of sexual content.

I think it may be related with religion, after all templars are cool but topless beaches are not (they are hot, I guess).

@RockmanBionics: @SeriouslyNow: I think sexual violence (aka rape) is probably the worst. I still don't know if laws (and consequences for the victims) are harder in the case of rapists or murders, though.

Without a doubt, sex.

The important question to ask yourself is what is the purpose of these two things in video games. Sex in video games is almost always exploitative. It usually serves as an advertising point designed to draw in the immature and the adolescent. In most cases, sex does little to nothing for both the gameplay and the narrative.

For sex to truly be looked at in video games as a serious subject it MUST serve a purpose other than pornography. Unless it brings something important to gameplay or narrative, there is no reason for it to be there, and should be examined very closely by the public. If the purpose is for it to be pornagraphic, there is a whole other avenue for such games to come out, there's no need to bump nasties in regular ass video games.

Violence while carrying its own issues which are constantly under debate, is a much better fit for videogames. Violence is an extension of competition, which, at it's core, is what video games are all about.

You're using the worst use of sex vs. the best use of violence, flawed argument.

Fair enough, it was definitely a gut reaction typed up in school cafeteria as i wait for my next class, but I would be interested in hearing some counter arguments for why violence deserves more attention in video games than sex.

@VikingCommando: But sex isn't used just as a marketing tool. It can show the growth of the relationship between two characters, like in Heavy Rain or Mass Effect.

Also I agree with ModerateViolence, if you're going to compare sex to violence either compare their two best uses or their two worst uses.

This question doesn't even make any sense.

I understand that you're linking these two things together because people frequently make the illogical argument of "why do you allow this violence and freak out about a 'boob'?" But these are two COMPLETELY disparate things. There is, at face value, absolutely nothing similar between them.

Which is bad? They're both bad. Why? Because the system is bad. Grown men using vice to attract young men to give them money is bad. Exploitation wherever it is found is bad.

Both are fine in games. Both are real world things in which we have to deal with. So bringing them into art is a natural expression of the lives we live.

I don't think drawing characters can count as exploitation, anyway, you say both are bad, but nobody voted for that option in the pool yet.

@kashif1 said:

You are very wrong, it can be in many different ways. This is just one example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKoHsbl3wT8

So if princess peach kisses Mario, it's not sex or not cartoony? how far does sex have to go in your opinion to be sex?

Sex can be part of gameplay, some dating sims get quite far, and the amount of some fluids that you can get to see may serve to tell the playing how good is the performance or some progress feedback. Is blood used as an indication of damage dealt or it's just cosmetic?

So violence (competition) is fine in your opinion, but colaborative challenges in the search of pleasure are not? Win-win situations are that bad in your book?

Games are like porn anyway: http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/trylks/some-psychology-behind-achievements/30-42573/

Sex has as far as I am aware always been very personal in western society. Ones sex life is usually something you do not want to be advertised. It is therefore natural that it is with some trepidation that sex is included in games, or other forms entertainment. Violence on the other hand is not as personal, especially considering all the violence that we consume on a daily basis. That does not make it any better as a subject of entertainment, but it does explain it in some way.

Personally I think that there is nothing wrong with having sex or violence in a game. There is nothing morally or ethically wrong with either in my opinion.

Sex is the worst offender. You can have any type of violence from a slap on the ass to gouging out someone's eyeball with a spoon and it's still just violence and the same idea/concept.

When perversion, eroticism, and Sex become involved one type of sexual behavior can completely offend someone who has a different idea of what sexual content should be.

As long as we continue to be a nation of pussies, worried about others feelings getting hurt over what we might think as individuals, then sexual content must always remain outside of games. Having it in the military now is bad enough.

It certainly is in North American Culture anyway. I'm not sure if it's still like this in the UK or not but Sex was accepted a lot more than Violence. Thatcher created the Video Nasties List to prevent certain films from being allowed into the country. While our Sun Shine Girl is in a bikini here in Canada, in the UK she's topless.

Personally I think the acceptance of Sexuality is normal whereas the acceptance of graphic violence is somewhat depraved. I love horror films and as much gore as I can stomach but it still strikes me as being backwards here in North America.

The Nasties list is gone, but does the UK still have a big problem with Violence and a very open and accepting attitude towards Sexuality?

Maybe if sex was as common as violence was in videogames from the very start and violence was a rarity, maybe we'd all think sex was fine and graphic violence was bad? At least that's what I think, it's really a matter of how desensitized you are to sex or violence.

When talking about video games or other media both are just fine. It just seems some people (mostly some Americans) have a screwed-up perspective and think sex is absolutely horrible...

But in the grand package we call the real world, violence if by far the worst.
