Mostly brought forth from recently playing again through the two Gears games with my lil brother and just how much fun it was. For the game itself, but also just for the conversations in between and the strategy it forces you to create as a team. Borderlands is another, though not nearly as engaging as the Gears games because of its almost sleepy atmosphere and lack of a pulling narrative.
Onto something older, another favourite that I used to always invite me mates over for during school was Jedi Power Battles. It wasn't well received I was shocked to found out years later, but during then it was one of my all time favourite games that I'd complete on my own countless times aswell as get alot of cooperative fun out of it, too. Specially when I tried to beat Darth Maul as Plo Koon...sunabitch was fuckin' impossible on your own when playing as that sluggish fuck! >=/
Some Of Your Most Treasured Coop Games?
Borderlands. It's the only coop game I've played, I'm not too into them. But I played it with dbz1995 and there were tons of awesome moments in that.
I used to play Jedi Power Battles loads back in the day. One of my favourite coop games is also another Star Wars game. Battlefront 2 was just good old fashioned fun. I also liked Project Eden even though I have never met anyone else who played that game. It was bad and good at the same time.

Zombies ate my neighbours.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time
Road Rash 64
Borderlands
Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2
Halo 3/ODST
World of Warcraft
Lord of the Rings Online
Red Dead Redemption.
And a lot more, I love playing things together with my best friend or cousin, to me these are all great and unbeatable memories.
Survive things meant for 5 players with only 2, finish Halo on Legendary together, work together in Phantasy Star as different classes and have intense boss battles, play a game every quest and thing to do from start to finish to DLC together...
I love gaming.
I don't play much multiplayer, but I do have fond memories of Turtles in Time. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the only co-op game I owned for a long time.

Goof Troop on the SNES was fun. Jackal, Double Dragon 2, Rescue Rangers and Monsters in my Pocket on the NES still get a lot of play.
Recently it has been Earth Defense Force 2017. Me and my friend will just turn the (ridiculously loud) ingame sounds down 80% and throw on some tunes and just shoot the shit while simultaneously shooting hordes of giant insects and robots.

For those who don't know it was a Co-op story campaign that ran parallel to Half Life 1 where you played the role of two female scientists assisting an unwitting Gordon freeman in his quest. For example the yellow crystal that appears in Half Life 1 that you start the resonance cascade with, well your first job in Decay is to bring that yellow crystal to the chamber. And it's 'proper co-op' too, not just playing together but one person having to do something like a door or a lever, while the other negotiates a series of jumps for example.
I'm pretty sure it's only available on the Playstation 2 version of Half Life. Which for my money was the definitive version until Half Life Source.
Good topic. I played co-op a ton when I was younger with my brother, and my buddies from school. After college my time spent playing co-op dwindled quite a bit, though =(
Off the top of my head, some favourites would be Halo: Combat Evolved, World of Warcraft (not really co-op in the traditional sense, but I played for months exclusively with two of my mates) and the first Left 4 Dead.
The original Halo campaign was so much fun on the higher difficulties.

I'm really bad at playing games co-op. I always think I want to play them with somebody but I can never commit to an actual time where we both can play. I did, however, run through Resident Evil 5 with a friend of mine and that was a lot of fun- though I've played through it solo 3-4 times and had just as much fun.
Portal 2 is coming in February and I think that's the next game where I have to find someone to play with no matter what.
Super Smash TV
Gunstar Heroes
Arcade beat em ups like TMNT: Turtles in Time, Final Fight, or Alien Vs. Predator
Gears 1/2
Halo (all of them, though I only really played 1 and 3)
I'm not a huge fan of co-op, but I adore Trine's 3 player co-op. Two player is ok, but it's just the single player with 2 people instead of 1. With 3 players there is no switching roles so you have to figure out a way to get all classes past all obstacles. It's a whole new game that way.
